Abstract

We investigate the geometric phase of a two-level atom (qubit) coupled to a bosonic reservoir with Lorentzian spectral density and find that for the non-Markovian dynamics in which the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is performed, the geometric phase has a $\ensuremath{\pi}$-phase jump at the nodal point. However, the exact result without the RWA given by the hierarchical equations of motion method shows that there is no such phase jump or nodal structure in the geometric phase. Thus our results demonstrate that the counterrotating terms significantly contribute to the geometric phase in the multimode Hamiltonian under certain circumstances.

Geometric phase of an atomic qubit coupled to a Lorentzian reservoir

Mingfeng Chen, Rongxin Chen, Zhen‐Biao Yang

Abstract We calculate the geometric phase for an atomic qubit coupled to a zero-temperature bosonic reservoir with a Lorentzian spectral density. The geometric phase is obtained without tracing out the degrees of freedom of the reservoir. It is shown that the phase accumulated by the total system is purely geometric and exhibits an oscillation behaviour in both the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes.

Non-Markovian effect on the geometric phase of a dissipative qubit

Juanjuan Chen, Jun‐Hong An, Qingjun Tong +2 more

We studied the geometric phase of a two-level atom coupled to an environment with Lorentzian spectral density. The non-Markovian effect on the geometric phase is explored analytically and numerically. In the weak coupling limit, the lowest order correction to the geometric phase is derived analytically and the general case is calculated numerically. It was found that the correction to the geometric phase is significantly large if the spectral width is small, and in this case the non-Markovian dynamics has a significant impact on the geometric phase. When the spectral width increases, the correction to the geometric phase becomes negligible, which shows the robustness of the geometric phase to the environmental white noises. The result is significant to the quantum information processing based on the geometric phase.

Non-Markovianity in experimentally simulated quantum channels: Role of counterrotating-wave terms

Shao-Jie Xiong, Qiwu Hu, Zhe Sun +4 more

We experimentally investigate the non-Markovianity problems in a quantum channel implemented by an all-optical setup. The quantum channel simulates the dynamics of a two-level (qubit) system surrounded by bosonic modes, with the system-environment interaction treated without applying the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). Therefore, it allows us to demonstrate the important role of counterrotating-wave terms in influencing the memory effects of the environment. The experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement and show quite different behaviors of the non-Markovianity measure between RWA and non-RWA channels. One can find the nonmonotonic dependence of the non-Markovianity measure on the coupling and detuning parameters in the non-RWA case, which is attributed to the competing mechanisms caused by the counterrotating-wave terms. We emphasize that the non-RWA channel provides a more clear description of the open-system dynamics and the counterrotating-wave terms are indispensable in the study of non-Markovianity.

Geometric phase and non-adiabatic resonance of the Rabi model

Sijiang Liu, Zhiguo Lü, Hang Zheng

Abstract We investigate the effects of counterrotating terms on geometric phase and its relation to the resonance of the Rabi model. We apply the unitary transformation with a single parameter to the Rabi model and obtain the transformed Hamiltonian involving multiple harmonic terms. By combining the counter-rotating-hybridized rotating-wave method with time-dependent perturbation theory, we solve systematically time evolution operator and then obtain the geometric phase of the two-level system. Our results are beyond adiabatic approximation and rotating-wave approximation (RWA). Higher-order harmonic resonance happens when driving frequency is equal to higher-order subharmonic of the Rabi frequency. In comparison with numerically exact results, our calculated results are accurate over a wide range of parameters space, especially in higher-order harmonic resonance regimes. In these regimes we demonstrate geometric phases change dramatically while those of the RWA are smooth. The RWA is thoroughly invalid even if the driving strength is extremely weak. We find it is the higher-order harmonic terms that play an important role on the cyclic state and demonstrate the characters of geometric phase in higher-order harmonic resonance regime. We also present analytical formalism of the change rate of geometric phase and quasienergies, which agree well with numerically exact ones even in the strong driving case. The developed method can be applied to explore the dynamics of strongly driven qubits and physical properties of higher-order harmonic processes.

Non-Markovian decoherence of a two-level system in a Lorentzian bosonic reservoir and a stochastic environment with finite correlation time

V.A. Mikhailov, Nikolay V. Troshkin

In this paper we investigate non-Markovian evolution of a two-level system (qubit) in a bosonic bath under influence of an external classical fluctuating environment. The interaction with the bath has the Lorentzian spectral density, and the fluctuating environment (stochastic field) is represented by a set of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Each of the subenvironments of the composite environment is able to induce non-Markovian dynamics of the two-level system. By means of the numerically exact method of hierarchical equations of motion, we study steady states of the two-level system, evolution of the reduced density matrix and the equilibrium emission spectra in dependence on the frequency cutoffs and the coupling strengths of the subenvironments. Additionally, we investigate the impact of the rotating wave approximation (RWA) for the interaction with the bath on accuracy of the results.

Decoherence of two qubits in non-Markovian reservoirs without the rotating-wave approximation

Wang Fa-Qiang, Zhi‐Ming Zhang, Ruisheng Liang

The decoherence of two initially entangled qubits in non-Markovian reservoirs has been investigated exactly without Born-Markovian approximation or rotating-wave approximation (RWA). The nonperturbative quantum master equation is derived and its exact solution is obtained. The decoherence behavior of two qubits, initially entangled in Bell states, has been investigated in the weak coupling regime and strong coupling regime. The results show that the counter-rotating wave terms have obvious influence on the decoherence behavior in the non-Markovian regime.
