Abstract

We investigate the dynamics of a two-qubit open quantum system, in particular the two-qubit spin-boson model in the strong coupling regime, coupled to two thermal bosonic baths under non-Markovian and non-equilibrium conditions. Two complementary approaches, the Hierarchical Equations of Motion (HEOM) and Reaction Coordinate Mapping (RCM), are employed to examine various coupling regimes between the qubits and their respective baths. The dynamical features of the model and the impact of the tunneling amplitude on quantum coherence of the system are probed using the $l_1$-norm of coherence. The model is further shown to have non-Markovian evolution. The nontrivial task of calculating entropy production in the strong-coupling regime is performed using auxiliary density operators in HEOM. Motivated by the realization of a quantum thermal device in the strong-coupling regime, the non-equilibrium steady-state behavior of the system is investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the heat and spin currents and the tunneling amplitude is probed.

Quantum heat transport of a two-qubit system: Interplay between system-bath coherence and qubit-qubit coherence

Akihito Kato, Yoshitaka Tanimura

We consider a system consisting of two interacting qubits that are individually coupled to separate heat baths at different temperatures. The quantum effects in heat transport are investigated in a numerically rigorous manner with a hierarchial equations of motion (HEOM) approach for non-perturbative and non-Markovian system-bath coupling cases under non-equilibrium steady-state conditions. For a weak interqubit interaction, the total system is regarded as two individually thermostatted systems, whereas for a strong interqubit interaction, the two-qubit system is regarded as a single system coupled to two baths. The roles of quantum coherence (or entanglement) between the two qubits (q-q coherence) and between the qubit and bath (q-b coherence) are studied through the heat current calculated for various strengths of the system-bath coupling and interqubit coupling for high and low temperatures. The same current is also studied using the time convolutionless (TCL) Redfield equation and using an expression derived from the Fermi golden rule (FGR). We find that the HEOM results exhibit turnover behavior of the heat current as a function of the system-bath coupling strength for all values of the interqubit coupling strength, while the results obtained with the TCL and FGR approaches do not exhibit such behavior, because they do not possess the capability of treating the q-b and q-q coherences. The maximum current is obtained in the case that the q-q coherence and q-b coherence are balanced in such a manner that coherence of the entire heat transport process is realized. We also find that the heat current does not follow Fourier's law when the temperature difference is very large, due to the non-perturbative system-bath interactions.

Strong coupling non-Markovian quantum thermodynamics of a finite-bath system

Devvrat Tiwari, Baibhab Bose, Subhashish Banerjee

The focus is on understanding the quantum thermodynamics of strongly coupled non-Markovian quantum systems. To this end, a non-trivial, non-Markovian model of a central spin surrounded by a spin bath is taken up, and its exact evolution is derived for arbitrary system-bath couplings. The fundamental quantum thermodynamic quantities, such as system and bath internal energies, work, heat, entropy production, and ergotropy, are calculated using the dynamics and the original system (bath) Hamiltonian. An explicit expression for the work, a mismatch between the system and bath internal energies, is derived. The thermodynamic entropy of the system at thermal equilibrium is studied using the Hamiltonian of mean force in the strong coupling regime. The role of a canonical Hamiltonian in calculating the above thermodynamic quantities, a recently developed technique, is also investigated. Furthermore, an interesting observation relevant to the spin bath acting as a charger is made in a scenario where the central spin is envisaged as a quantum battery.

Steady-state coherence of spin-boson model in a general non-Markovian environment

Fangqin Jin, Wen‐Long You, Yue Dai +3 more

Based on the quantum coherence theory, we employ the [Formula: see text]-norm measure to explore the steady-state coherence (SSC) in the spin-boson model. In this model, the environment is a non-Markovian bosonic bath with Ohmic-like spectral density. More generally, the interaction coupling between the qubit and the environment is a linear superposition of pure dephasing and pure damping coupling. Governed by the non-Markovian dynamics, some compact expressions of the SSC have been obtained at both zero temperature and high temperature. It shows that the hybrid coupling significantly affects the SSC. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis has been conducted to investigate the effects of various crucial factors, including the temperature of the bosonic bath, the qubit’s tunneling and the Ohmicity parameter. This analysis provides an effective approach for maintaining a relatively high SSC by manipulating system parameters.

Coherent Dynamics of the Off-Diagonal Spin-Boson Model in the Ultra-Strong Coupling Regime

Nirmalendu Acharyya, Richter, Martin, Benjamin Philipp Fingerhut

Quantum mechanics describes the unitary time evolution of closed systems. In practice, every quantum system interacts with the environment leading to an irreversible loss of coherence. The Spin-Boson model (SBM) is central to the understanding of the fundamental process of decoherence of a two-state quantum system interacting with a bosonic heat bath but the nature of transient dynamics in the presence of hybrid diagonal and off-diagonal system-bath interactions remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate how the hybrid system-bath interactions of an Ohmic environment induce localization in the bias-free SBM. For strong coupling to the environment, localization is strongly affected by a dynamically generated bias via the renormalization of the tunneling amplitude. We find that counteractive effects of Hamiltonian parameters on non-exponential short-time dynamics and long-time population equilibration can lead to a separation of timescales and non-equilibrium quantum coherent dynamics that can persist even for ultra-strong system-bath interaction. The findings offer novel opportunities to exploit coherence as a resource in quantum devices operating in the ultra-strong coupling regime.

Quantum thermodynamics of the spin-boson model using the principle of minimal dissipation

Salvatore Gatto, Alessandra Colla, Heinz‐Peter Breuer +1 more

A recently developed approach to the thermodynamics of open quantum systems, on the basis of the principle of minimal dissipation, is applied to the spin-boson model. Employing a numerically exact quantum dynamical treatment based on the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) method, we investigate the influence of the environment on quantities such as work, heat, and entropy production in a range of parameters which go beyond the weak-coupling limit and include both the nonadiabatic and the adiabatic regimes. The results reveal significant differences to the weak-coupling forms of work, heat, and entropy production, which are analyzed in some detail.

Spin-boson model under dephasing: Markovian versus non-Markovian dynamics

Naushad Ahmad Kamar, Daniel A. Paz, Mohammad F. Maghrebi

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath, is extensively studied as a paradigmatic dissipative quantum system, exhibiting rich dynamical behavior and even a localization transition in the strong coupling regime. Here, we additionally consider dephasing as a source of Markovian dissipation on top of the non-Markovian dynamics due to an Ohmic bath, and investigate the dynamics of the spin. We show that the characteristic frequency of the spin dynamics, while strongly renormalized by the bosonic bath, changes in a simple fashion (or does not change at all) with dephasing. To obtain these results, we develop an exact nonperturbative method known as the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, mimicking the Ohmic bath via a stochastic magnetic field combined with the Lindblad quantum master equation due to dephasing, which allows us to numerically compute the dynamics. Furthermore, we derive weak-coupling analytic results utilizing the well-known noninteracting blip approximation. Our findings are relevant to quantum simulation of the spin-boson model in the regime of strong coupling in trapped ions and circuit QED architectures among others.
