Abstract

We theoretically investigate the possibility of controlling the high magneto-optical rotation without suffering an accompanying loss in transmission via the presence of a plasmonic nanostructure near the atomic five-level system. The key to optimization is the introduction of an additional degree of freedom by the location of the plasmonic nanostructure. We show that placing the plasmonic nanostructure at different distances from the atomic system allows arbitrary magneto-optical rotations with virtually 100% transmission. We numerically and analytically show that the existence of the plasmonic nanostructure near the atomic system leads to a strong adjustment of the optical properties of the quantum systems. We present a number of controlling parameters with emphasis on realizing 45° and 90° rotations in the proposed structure. The introduced model can exhibit great performances in converting TE-TM polarization and isolator applications.

Control over magneto-optical plasmon rotation with Doppler broadening and cross-Kerr non-linearity

Habibur Rahman, Meezan Ahmad, Ubaid Ullah +3 more

We investigate the impacts of cross-Kerr non-linearity and Doppler broadening on the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) induced in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) located at the interface of a metalic medium and a 4-level atomic system. In this paper, the external static magnetic field and a weak probe field under the cross-Kerr effect result in the birefringence enhancement of the system. Moreover, the incoherent effect of Doppler broadening can regulate the MOR of SPPs. Notably, the controlled MOR of SPPs can be leveraged for a variety of advantageous implementations in the fields of polarization spectroscopy, optical communication, nanoscale Faraday isolation, accurate metrology, as well as bio/chem sensing technologies.

Diffractionless transmission of optical beams through a four-level atomic system affected by a plasmonic nanostructure

Parvin Lotfi, Mostafa Sahrai, Vahid Siahpoush +1 more

A nondiffracting propagation of an optical beam through a four-level double-V-type quantum system near a plasmonic nanostructure is investigated. We study the linear absorption and dispersion properties of the quantum system as it interacts with two laser fields. We discuss the effect of the control beam with a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) profile on the focusing of the probe beam in the presence of a plasmonic nanostructure. An appropriately selected control beam excites one transition of the atomic system and generates a spatially varying refraction index modulation for a weak probe beam that couples to the other transition. We demonstrate that placing a plasmonic nanostructure at a nanometer distance from the atomic system and using a control field with the spatial structure leads to the diffraction-less propagation of the probe beam through the atomic system. Also, it is shown that the optical properties and probe beam focusing can be controlled by adjusting the distance of the plasmonic nanostructure from the atomic system. The proposed all-optical waveguide with high contrast and transmission can be used to implement applications such as image transfer through the medium and image processing.

Controllable atom-photon entanglement via quantum interference near plasmonic nanostructure

Behzad Sangshekan, Mostafa Sahrai, Seyyed Hossein Asadpour +1 more

A five-level atomic system is proposed in vicinity of a two-dimensional (2D) plasmonic nanostructure with application in atom-photon entanglement. The behavior of the atom-photon entanglement is discussed with and without a control laser field. The amount of atom-photon entanglement is controlled by the quantum interference created by the plasmonic nanostructure. Thus, the degree of atom-photon entanglement is affected by the atomic distance from the plasmonic nanostructure. In the presence of a control field, maximum entanglement between the atom and its spontaneous emission field is observed.

Phase dependence of optical bistability and multistability in a four-level quantum system near a plasmonic nanostructure

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

The optical bistability and multistability properties of a four-level quantum system near a plasmonic nanostructure embedded in a unidirectional ring cavity are studied theoretically. Two orthogonal circularly polarized laser fields with the same frequency, different phases and electric fields amplitude are interacted by four-level quantum system. It is found that in the presence of the plasmonic nanostructure, the bistable behaviors related to one of the laser fields propagating through the unidirectional ring cavity can be modified by relative phase and amplitude control of another laser fields. Our obtained results show that the optical bistability can be converted into the optical multistability by varying the value of distance between the quantum system and the surface of the plasmonic nanostructure. Moreover, it is shown that under specific condition related to the distance, the lasing without population inversion can be obtained.

Tunable optical and magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr rotations in a dielectric slab doped with double-V type atoms

Azar Vafafard, Mostafa Sahrai

We theoretically investigate the optical and magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr rotations of a probe field that propagates through a nonmagnetic dielectric slab doped with double-V type atoms. Both rotations and corresponding ellipticities, as well as the intensities of transmitted and reflected beams, are modified by quantum coherence induced in the atomic system. We show that applying a control laser field makes the system optically active and simultaneously, transparent to one component of the probe field. We demonstrate that the response of the slab can be modified both electrically and magnetically. Applying the second control laser field with different Rabi frequencies improves the optical properties of the slab due to the induced coherent effects. We present analytical expressions for facilitating the detailed study of the system behaviors. Magneto-optical Faraday rotation 45° with transmission close to [Formula: see text] and large Kerr rotation with high reflection are significant results from the influence of both the control and magnetic fields on such a small structure. By prevailing over the tradeoff between reflection and rotation, the proposed model could be considered as a special candidate for rotating the polarization plane of the transmitted and reflected beams, simultaneously.

Magneto-optical rotation of surface plasmon polaritons

Habibur Rahman, Hazrat Ali, Iftikhar Ahmad +2 more

Abstract We investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of a metal and a four-level atomic system. The MOR of SPPs can be controlled and modified with the intensity and frequency of the applied fields. We show the birefringence enhancement of the weak probe fields propagating through the atomic medium in the presence of the static magnetic field. The external magnetic field has a vital role in the generation and control over the MOR of SPPs. The MOR completely stops when either the external magnetic field or the probe field or both are tuned to resonance. A pretty behavior of MOR of SPPs is observed for a specific set of control field frequency. The enhanced MOR of SPP has significant applications in atomic spectroscopy, optical communication, nano-photonics, optical switches, and precise measurement.
