Atom-photon interface using the higher order modes of an ultrathin optical fiber

Thomas Nieddu, Jinjin Du, Síle Nic Chormaic

We create an atom-photon interface using the higher order modes (HOM) of an ultrathin optical fiber. We explore interactions between HOMs and a cold atomic ensemble, with aim to transfer and store orbital angular momentum.

Cold-Atom Physics Using Ultrathin Optical Fibers: Light-Induced Dipole Forces and Surface Interactions

G. Sagué, E. Vetsch, Wolfgang Alt +2 more

The strong evanescent field around ultrathin unclad optical fibers bears a high potential for detecting, trapping, and manipulating cold atoms. Introducing such a fiber into a cold-atom cloud, we investigate the interaction of a small number of cold cesium atoms with the guided fiber mode and with the fiber surface. Using high resolution spectroscopy, we observe and analyze light-induced dipole forces, van der Waals interaction, and a significant enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate of the atoms. The latter can be assigned to the modification of the vacuum modes by the fiber.

Ultrathin Optical Fiber Applications for Quantum Technologies

Síle Nic Chormaic

Ultrathin optical fibers (see Fig. 1), with diameters on the order of the propagating light wavelength, have already demonstrated their versatility across a number of different areas, such as sensing, microparticle manipulation, cold atom physics, and as optical couplers.
