Abstract

Ultrathin optical fibers (see Fig. 1), with diameters on the order of the propagating light wavelength, have already demonstrated their versatility across a number of different areas, such as sensing, microparticle manipulation, cold atom physics, and as optical couplers.

We create an atom-photon interface using the higher order modes (HOM) of an ultrathin optical fiber. We explore interactions between HOMs and a cold atomic ensemble, with aim to transfer and store orbital angular momentum.

Optical nanofibers: a powerful tool for manipulating and trapping cold atoms and microparticles

Síle Nic Chormaic

The optical nanofiber, while remarkably simple in design, yields surprisingly beautiful complexity. In this work, we will explore recent advances in the use of optical nanofibers, from manipulating particles to generating one-dimensional arrays of cold ground state or Rydberg atoms. Some of the challenges and potentials they provide in both classical and quantum physics are also discussed.
