Abstract

Broadband quantum-limited amplifiers play a critical role in the single-shot readout of superconducting qubits, but a popular implementation, the traveling wave parametric amplifier, involves a complex design and fabrication process. Here, we present a simple design for a Josephson parametric amplifier, using a lumped element resonator comprising a superconducting quantum interference device whose useful bandwidth is enhanced with an on-chip impedance-matching circuit. We demonstrate a flux-coupling geometry that maximizes the coupling to the Josephson loop and minimizes spurious excitation of the amplifier resonant circuit. The amplifier, which operates in a flux-pumped mode, is demonstrated with a power gain of more than 20 dB over a bandwidth of about 300 MHz, where approximate noise measurements indicate quantum-limited performance. A procedure is given for optimizing the bandwidth for this kind of amplifier, using a linearized circuit simulation while minimizing non-linearities.

Development and characterization of a flux-pumped lumped element Josephson parametric amplifier

Martina Esposito, Joseph Rahamim, Andrew Patterson +11 more

Josephson parametric amplification is a tool of paramount importance in circuit-QED especially for the quantum-noise-limited single-shot read-out of superconducting qubits. We developed a Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) based on a lumped-element LC resonator, in which the inductance L is composed by a geometric inductance and an array of 4 superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). We characterized the main figures of merit of the device, obtaining a −3 dB bandwidth BW = 15 MHz for a gain G = 21 dB and a 1 dB compression point P1dB = −115 dBm. The obtained results are promising for the future use of such JPA as the first stage of amplification for single-shot readout of superconducting qubits.

Broadband Josephson parametric amplifier using lumped-element transmission line impedance matching architecture

Yapeng Lu, Wenqu Xu, Quan Zuo +12 more

We present a fishbone-like lumped-element artificial transmission line to overcome impedance mismatch in a reflection-type Josephson parametric amplifier between a nonlinear resonator and an external transmission line. Using this easily prepared architecture, we design and fabricate a broadband Josephson parametric amplifier, which has gain in an excess of 20 dB with a bandwidth of hundreds of MHz. Furthermore, by varying the working point of the device, the operating frequency of amplification can be tuned in a wide frequency range of 1 GHz while the amplifier operates in the mode of either three-wave mixing or four-wave mixing. Such a parametric amplifier is suitable for engineering applications of superconducting circuit quantum electrodynamics.

Josephson parametric amplifiers are an important part of a modern superconducting quantum computing platform and squeezed quantum states generation devices. Traveling wave and impedance-matched parametric amplifiers provide broad bandwidth for high-fidelity single-shot readout of multiple qubit superconducting circuits. Here, we present a quantum-limited 3-wave-mixing parametric amplifier based on superconducting nonlinear asymmetric inductive elements (SNAILs), whose useful bandwidth is enhanced with an on-chip two-section impedance-matching circuit based on microstrip transmission lines. The amplifier dynamic range is increased using an array of 67 SNAILs with 268 Josephson junctions, forming a nonlinear quarter-wave resonator. Operating in a current-pumped mode, we experimentally demonstrate an average gain of 17 dB across 300 MHz bandwidth, along with an average saturation power of –100 dBm, which can go as high as −97 dBm with quantum-limited noise performance. Moreover, the amplifier can be fabricated using a simple technology with just one e-beam lithography step.

Broadband flux-pumped Josephson parametric amplifier with an on-chip coplanar waveguide impedance transformer

Abstract The rapid progress towards scalable quantum processors demands amplifiers with large bandwidths and high saturation powers. For this purpose, we present a broadband flux-pumped Josephson parametric amplifier integrated with an on-chip coplanar waveguide impedance transformer. Our device can be fabricated with simple and straightforward photo-lithography. This device experimentally achieves an operational bandwidth over 600 MHz with a gain above 15 dB, and a high saturation power with quantum-limited noise performance. In addition, the center frequency of this device can be tuned over several hundred megahertz, which in turn broadens the effective operational bandwidth to around 1 GHz.

Fabrication and characterization of all-Nb lumped-element Josephson parametric amplifiers*

Hang Xue, Zhirong Lin, Wenbing Jiang +4 more

Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) with nearly quantum-limited noise performance have become indispensable devices for the measurements of superconducting quantum information. We have developed an all-Nb lumped-element flux-driven JPA operating in the three-wave mixing mode. Our Nb-based JPA comprises Nb/Al-AlO x /Nb Josephson junctions, a parallel-plate capacitor with SiO2 dielectric sandwiched between two Nb layers, a bottom coplanar waveguides layer, and a top Nb wiring layer. We experimentally demonstrate a 20 dB gain over a 190 MHz bandwidth, a mean 1 dB compression of –123 dBm, and near quantum-limited noise performance. This fabrication process can be further used to design impedance transformed parametric amplifiers for multiple-qubit readout.

Lumped-element two-section impedance-matched SNAIL parametric amplifier

Daria A. Moskaleva, Nikita S. Smirnov, Dmitry O. Moskalev +11 more

Broadband impedance-matched Josephson parametric amplifiers are key components for high-fidelity single-shot multi-qubit readout. Nowadays, several types of impedance matched parametric amplifiers have been proposed: the first is an impedance-matched parametric amplifier based on a Klopfenstein taper, and the second is an impedance-matched parametric amplifier based on auxiliary resonators. Here, we present the quantum-limited 3-wave-mixing lumped-element SNAIL parametric amplifier with two-units impedance matching transformer. A two-pole Chebyshev matching network with shunted resonators based on parallel-plate capacitors and superconducting planar coil. Operating in a flux-pumped mode, we experimentally demonstrate an average gain of $15dB$ across a $600MHz$ bandwidth, along with an average saturation power of $-107dBm$ and quantum-limited noise temperature.
