Coupling between atoms and localized modes in a defect-free quasiperiodic photonic crystal

Xingsheng Xu, Yonghao Gao

Abstract In this study, the evolution spectrum and emission dynamics of atoms in a defect-free quasiperiodic photonic crystal are studied. Quasiperiodic photonic crystal have advantages over periodic photonic crystal in terms of abundant and strong localized modes due to the quasiperiodic and self-approximation structures of quasiperiodic photonic crystal. The localized modes exhibit extremely large local density of states and high-quality factors in the quasiperiodic photonic crystal. The frequencies of the large local density of states of the localized modes do not depend on the polarization and the position in a particular area in the quasiperiodic photonic crystals. Due to the extremely large local density of states in the defect-free quasiperiodic photonic crystal, strong coupling between the atom and the localized mode in the quasiperiodic photonic crystal can easily occur. Correspondingly, the population of the excited state displays Rabi oscillation, and the emission spectrum of the atom splits into two peaks. Moreover, the Rabi oscillation and the evolution spectrum of the dressed atom depend on the radiation linewidth.

Strong modification of density of optical states in biotemplated photonic crystals

Matthew R. Jorgensen, Benjamin P. Yonkee, Michael H. Bartl

Nature has developed sophisticated methods to create structure-based colors as a way to address the need of a wide variety of organisms. This pallet of available structures presents a unique opportunity for the investigation of new photonic crystal designs. Low-temperature sol-gel biotemplating methods were used to transform a single biotemplate into a variety of inorganic oxide structures. The density of optical states was calculated for a diamond-based natural photonic crystal, as well as several structures templated from it. Calculations were experimentally probed by spontaneous emission studies using time correlated single photon counting measurements.

Single-photon source in strong photon-atom interaction regime in quasiperiodic photonic crystals

Xingsheng Xu, Hongda Chen, Toshiki Yamada +1 more

The antibunching properties of the fluorescence from a two-level ideal system in a 12-fold quasiperiodic photonic crystal are investigated based on the calculated local density of states. We found that the antibunching phenomenon of the fluorescence from two-level ideal systems could be significantly changed by varying their positions, i.e. , perfect antibunching and antibunching with damped Rabi oscillation phenomenon occurred in different positions and at different frequencies in photonic crystals as a result of the large differences in the local density of states. This study revealed that the multi-level coherence of fluorescence from a two-level ideal system could be manipulated by controlling the position of the two-level ideal system in photonic crystals and the emission frequency in the photonic band structure.
