Summary form only given. We present a four-wave mixing (FWM) experiment using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The FWM process is analyzed via the nonlinear susceptibilities for carrier density pulsation (CDP), the spectral hole burning (SHB) and the carrier heating (CH).

Investigation of intensity noise transfer during four-wave mixing in nonlinear optical media

Aravind P. Anthur, Seán Ó Dúill, Liam P. Barry

We give the analytical expressions for the transfer of amplitude noise from the mixing frequencies to the generated frequencies during a nondegenerate and partially degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) process and verify them by comparing with the numerical simulation results. We use these analytical expressions to study the amplitude noise relationships between the mixing frequencies and the generated frequencies during an FWM process, for various conditions. We also study the variance, relative intensity noise (RIN), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the generated frequencies as a function of the power, RIN, and SNR of the input signal.

Comment on “Opening Optical Four-Wave Mixing Channels with Giant Enhancement Using Ultraslow Pump Waves”

Roberto Buffa, Stefano Cavalieri, Marco V. Tognetti

In their recent study [1] on a four-wave mixing (FWM) process, Deng et al. state that ‘‘many orders of magnitude enhancement in the amplitude of the generated wave’’ is obtained when electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is present. Here we will show that their claim is deeply misleading. In fact, according to the formulas reported in their paper, it is straightforward to show that the efficiency of the FWM generation process is actually reduced by the presence of EIT, and that the maximum FWM signal is obtained in the absence of EIT.
