Abstract

After considering Kerr nonlinear effect, group velocity dispersion of host and gain distribution of active particle in laser amplifying medium, a basic equation describing propagation of the coupling optical pulse under the multi-photon nonlinear Compton scattering in the laser amplifying medium has been deduced. Besides, the profile and power spectrum of a picosecond-level super-Gaussian coupling pulse in the laser amplifying medium have been discussed when its central frequency coincides with the gain peak frequency of the laser amplifying medium.

Phase sensitivity by fast light propagation using compton scattering and Kerr non-linearity

Jehan Akbar, Bin Xu, Lianping Hou +2 more

Abstract We theoretically investigated the sub-luminal and super-luminal light propagation by introducing compton scattering and Kerr non-linear effects to a four level atomic system. Slow light propagation is observed at a group index of 3918 in the transparency region. The slow light propagation is tuned to fast light propagation at group index 0.2, using compton scattering angle of $$\varphi =\pi /6$$ φ = π / 6 . The surperluminality is further enhanced with compton scattering angle at the resonance frequency. Under the Kerr nonlinearity, the slow light propagation at a group index of 3918 is enhanced to fast light propagation at group index of $$2\times 10^6$$ 2 × 10 6 at the resonance frequency. The group index is reduced to $$6.56281\times 10^{-5}$$ 6.56281 × 10 - 5 in the presence of both Kerr non-linearity and compton scattering. In the presence of compton scattering, the Phase shift at $$\pi /2$$ π / 2 without Kerr nonlinearity is $$7\times 10^{-8}$$ 7 × 10 - 8 radian and with Kerr nonlinearity its value is $$1.7\times 10^{-9}$$ 1.7 × 10 - 9 radian at resonance frequency. This demonstrate that introducing Kerr effect and compton scattering lead to significant modifications in the phase shift.

Superluminal optical pulse propagation in nonlinear coherent media

Ruben G. Ghulghazaryan, Yuri P. Malakyan

We investigate a light-pulse propagation with negative group velocity in a nonlinear coherent medium. We show that the necessary conditions for nonlinear superluminal effects to be observable are realized in a three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system interacting with a linearly polarized laser field in the presence of a static magnetic field. The initially prepared Zeeman coherence cancels the resonant absorption of the medium almost completely, but preserves its dispersion anomalous and very high. In this medium the light pulse propagates superluminally in the sense that the peak of the transmitted pulse exits the medium before the peak of the incident pulse enters. At the same time the pulse group velocity is intensity dependent, which leads to the self-steepening of the pulse trailing edge due to the fact that the more intense parts of the pulse travel slower. This is in contrast with the shock wave generation in a nonlinear medium with normal dispersion. The predicted effect can be easily observed in the well-known schemes employed in the studies of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation. The upper bound of sample length is found from the criterion that the pulse self-steepening and group-advance time are observable without pulse distortion caused by the group-velocity dispersion.

Propagation of Light Pulses in a Laser Amplifier

A. Icsevgi, Willis E. Lamb

The problem of a light pulse propagating in a nonlinear laser medium is investigated. The electromagnetic field is treated classically and the active medium consists of thermally moving atoms which have two electronic states with independent decay constants ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{a}$ and ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{b}$ in addition to the decay constant ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ab}}$ describing the phase memory. The self-consistency requirement that the field sustained by the polarized medium be equal to the field inducing the polarization leads to coupled equations of motion for the density matrix, and equations of propagation for the electromagnetic field. Although the theory is developed for a Doppler-broadened gaseous medium, it may also be applied to a solid medium with inhomogeneous broadening. A unified treatment is given encompassing a wide range of pulse durations from cw signals to psec pulses. Continuous pumping is allowed, as well as any amount of detuning of the carrier frequency of the pulse from the atomic resonance frequency. The three independent decay constants ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{a}$, ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{b}$, and ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ab}}$ provide greater flexibility than that obtained by using $\frac{1}{{T}_{1}}$ and $\frac{1}{{T}_{2}}$. The equations are solved analytically in a few specialized cases and numerically in the general case. Flow charts for accomplishing the numerical integration are given. Among the special problems considered is the apparent paradox of pulses propagating faster than the velocity of light under circumstances described by Basov et al. It is shown that this contradiction with relativity arises from the use of an unphysical initial condition.

Propagation of ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in a Kerr medium with impurity atoms under quasi-resonance conditions

Askhat M Basharov, Andrei I. Maimistov

The study of the propagation of an electromagnetic ultrashort pulse in a Kerr medium with impurity atoms under quasi-resonance conditions is reported, which demonstrates the efficiency of the unitary transformation method in nonlinear optics. An equation is derived, which differs from the known equations describing the evolution of a pulse envelope and takes into account the dispersion of the nonlinear response and the dispersion of group velocities.

Light pulse progagation in a nonlinear amplifying medium

R. V. Ambartzumian, Nikolay G. Basov, Vladimir V. Zuev +2 more

Summary form only, as given. A powerful light pulse propagation through an optical amplifier driven at saturation was studied theoretically and experimentally. It was shown that maximum of light pulse of &-switched laser propagates through amplifying medium with velocity much higher than the light velocity without any essential decrease of pulse duration. Conditions of reducing pulse duration by nonlinear amplification were found.
