Abstract

Abstract We theoretically investigated the sub-luminal and super-luminal light propagation by introducing compton scattering and Kerr non-linear effects to a four level atomic system. Slow light propagation is observed at a group index of 3918 in the transparency region. The slow light propagation is tuned to fast light propagation at group index 0.2, using compton scattering angle of $$\varphi =\pi /6$$ φ = π / 6 . The surperluminality is further enhanced with compton scattering angle at the resonance frequency. Under the Kerr nonlinearity, the slow light propagation at a group index of 3918 is enhanced to fast light propagation at group index of $$2\times 10^6$$ 2 × 10 6 at the resonance frequency. The group index is reduced to $$6.56281\times 10^{-5}$$ 6.56281 × 10 - 5 in the presence of both Kerr non-linearity and compton scattering. In the presence of compton scattering, the Phase shift at $$\pi /2$$ π / 2 without Kerr nonlinearity is $$7\times 10^{-8}$$ 7 × 10 - 8 radian and with Kerr nonlinearity its value is $$1.7\times 10^{-9}$$ 1.7 × 10 - 9 radian at resonance frequency. This demonstrate that introducing Kerr effect and compton scattering lead to significant modifications in the phase shift.

The effect of Kerr nonlinearity and Doppler broadening on slow light propagation

Hazrat Ali, Ziauddin Ziauddin, Iftikhar Ahmad

The influence of Kerr nonlinearity and Doppler broadening on the slow light propagation of a dispersive atomic medium is revisited using a four-level ?-type (87Rb) atomic system under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The medium exhibits an EIT process which is accompanied by normal dispersion, i.e.,?sub-luminal (slow light) pulse propagation. In the presence of Kerr nonlinearity and the Doppler broadening effect the dispersion property of the proposed atomic medium is modified, which leads to enhancement of the positive group index of the medium. The combined effect of Kerr nonlinearity and Doppler broadening on slow light propagation inside the medium is the major motivation for this work.

Giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level Y-type atomic system

Nguyen Van Phu, Nguyen Huy Bang, Doai Van Le

The analytical expression for the group index in a degenerated three-level lambda-type atomic system is derived as a function of the parameters of laser fields and external magnetic field. The influence of the external magnetic field on the group index is investigated. It is shown that by changing the magnitude or sign of the external magnetic field, the transparency window with normal dispersion switches to enhanced absorption with anomalous dispersion at the line center and hence the light propagation can be converted between subluminal and superluminal modes. Phase-sensitive Kerr nonlinearity for closed-loop quantum systems

Hamid Reza Hamedi, Gediminas Juzeliūnas

The third-order susceptibility is investigated in a five-level atomic system in which the laser beams couple the ground state to a four-level closed-loop system. It is found that under the condition of the multiphoton resonance, one can enhance the Kerr nonlinearity of such a medium by properly adjusting the amplitudes and phases of the applied fields. In this case, the linear and nonlinear absorption reduce considerably in a region with a positive group velocity. It is demonstrated that the third-order susceptibility is very sensitive to the relative phase of the applied fields. An analytical model is presented to elucidate such phase control of the Kerr nonlinearity. A comparison is also made between the Kerr-nonlinear indices for the five-, four-, and three-level systems. It is realized that the magnitude of the Kerr nonlinearity for the five-level system is larger than that of the three- and four-level counterparts. Finally, it is shown that effect of Doppler broadening can lead to an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity while maintaining linear and nonlinear absorption.

Sagnac interferometry and self-Kerr nonlinearity dependent photon drag

Sana Ullah, Arif Ullah, Bakht Amin Bacha +1 more

Abstract We present a theoretical investigation of the photon drag by incorporating self-Kerr nonlinearity (SKN) in a Sagnac interferometer featuring a four-level atomic system. By introducing SKN in the system, we demonstrate significant improvements in the photon drag angles, ranging from ±10 micro-radians to ±1 centi-radians. Additionally, the presence of SKN leads to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), reduced group velocities, and a positive group index enhancement within the system. Conversely, in the absence of SKN, a negative group index is observed, accompanied by larger group velocities and minimal photon drag angles. The results obtained may have potential applications in various fields, such as slow-light detection, controlled image coding/design, efficient light modulators, and phase-matching in Brillouin scattering.

Control of Group Velocity via Spontaneous Generated Coherence and Kerr Nonlinearity

Hazrat Ali, Iftikhar Ahmad, Ziauddin Ziauddin

A four-level N-type atomic medium is considered to study the effect of spontaneous generated coherence (SGC) and Kerr nonlinearity on light pulse propagation. A light pulse is propagating inside the medium where each atom follows four-level N-type atom-field configuration of rubidium ( 85 Rb) atom. The atom-field interaction leads to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) process. The atom-field interaction is accompanied by normal dispersion and in the presence of SGC and Kerr nonlinearity the dispersion property of the proposed atomic medium is modified, which leads to enhancement of positive group index of the medium. The enhancement of positive group index then leads to slow group velocity inside the medium. A more slow group velocity is also investigated by incorporated the collective effect of SGC and Kerr nonlinearity. The control of group velocity inside a four-level N-type atomic medium via collective effect of SGC and Kerr nonlinearity is the major part of this work.

Fast light in atomic media

A. M. Akulshin, Russell McLean

Atomic media have played a major role in studies of fast light. One of their attractive features is the ability to manipulate experimental parameters to control the dispersive properties that determine the group velocity of a propagating light pulse. We give an overview of the experimental methods, based on both linear and nonlinear atom-light interaction, that have produced superluminal propagation in atomic media, and discuss some of the significant theoretical contributions to the issues of pulse preservation and reconciling faster-than-light propagation and the principle of causality. The comparison of storage of light, enhanced Kerr nonlinearity and efficient wave mixing processes in slow and fast light atomic media illustrates their common and distinct features.
