The Inversionless Amplification in a Tripod System of 87 Rb Atoms in a Magneto-optical Trap

Zhen Sun, Feng-Dong Jia, Shuang-Fei Lv +6 more

The probe transmission spectra around the atomic transition 5 2 S 1/2 , F = 2 → 5 2 P 3/2 ,F′ = 2 of 87 Rb are measured in a magneto-optical trap by adding a coupling field around the atomic transition 5 2 S 1/2 , F = 2 → 5 2 P 3/2 ,F′ = 2. The inversionless amplification is observed in the spectrum over the atomic transition 5 2 S 1/2 , F = 2 → 5 2 P 3/2 ,F′ = 2. The tripod electromagnetically induced transparency is proposed to account for the amplification feature, in which population distributions among these related atomic levels play an important role.

Single-laser, one beam, tetrahedral magneto-optical trap

Matthieu Vangeleyn, Paul F. Griffin, Erling Riis +1 more

We have realized a 4-beam pyramidal magneto-optical trap ideally suited for future microfabrication. Three mirrors split and steer a single incoming beam into a tripod of reflected beams, allowing trapping in the four-beam overlap volume. We discuss the influence of mirror angle on cooling and trapping, finding optimum efficiency in a tetrahedral configuration. We demonstrate the technique using an ex-vacuo mirror system to illustrate the previously inaccessible supra-plane pyramid MOT configuration. Unlike standard pyramidal MOTs both the pyramid apex and its mirror angle are non-critical and our MOT offers improved molasses free from atomic shadows in the laser beams. The MOT scheme naturally extends to a 2-beam refractive version with high optical access. For quantum gas experiments, the mirror system could also be used for a stable 3D tetrahedral optical lattice.

Polarization phase gate with a tripod atomic system

S. Rebić, David Vitali, Carlo Ottaviani +4 more

We analyze the nonlinear optical response of a four-level atomic system driven into a tripod configuration. The large cross-Kerr nonlinearities that occur in such a system are shown to produce nonlinear phase shifts of order $\ensuremath{\pi}$. Such a substantial shift may be observed in a cold atomic gas in a magneto-optical trap where it could be feasibly exploited towards the realization of a polarization quantum phase gate. The experimental feasibility of such a gate is here examined in detail.
