Observation of individual neutral atoms in magnetic and magneto-optical traps

We have identified and photographed individual cesium atoms in a magneto-optical trap with steep magnetic gradients. By switching off the trapping light fields, single atoms were released to a bound state of the magnetic potential. A storage time of 38 s was measured for purely magnetic trapping, whereas a storage time of 147 s was observed in the corresponding magneto-optical trap.

Observation of single neutral atoms in a large-magnetic-gradient vapour-cell magneto-optical trap

Wang Jing, Jun He, Qiu Ying +4 more

Single caesium atoms in a large-magnetic-gradient vapour-cell magneto-optical trap have been identified. The trapping of individual atoms is marked by the steps in fluorescence signal corresponding to the capture or loss of single atoms. The typical magnetic gradient is about 29 mT/cm, which evidently reduces the capture rate of magneto-optical trap.

A lattice of magneto-optical and magnetic traps for cold atoms

A. Grabowski, Tilman Pfau

Basic periodic trapping configurations is presented, which can be realized with multilayer microstructures. The trapping fields for the atoms (Ioffe Pritchard type potentials for magnetic trapping of atoms as well as quadrupole fields for magneto-optical trapping) are formed by two layers of crossed wires, which can be individually addressed. The possibility of producing multiple magneto optical traps (MOT) next to a surface in a controlled manner will be shown. This could be a first step to load ultracold atoms into an array of microstructured magnetic traps in a parallel way.
