Infinite wall in the fractional quantum mechanics

Abstract

The space-fractional Schrödinger equation for a local potential is difficult to solve because the fractional Riesz operator in it is nonlocal. In fractional quantum mechanics, the infinite wall is a basic problem and has not been solved yet. In this paper, we consider a free particle in an infinite wall region. Making use of the Lévy path integral method, we derive the Lévy path integral amplitude of the particle and take advantage of it to get the solution of the fractional Schrödinger equation for an infinite wall. Then, the infinite wall potential with a delta-function perturbation is also studied. According to Fox’s H-function, we get an equation of bound state energies of a free particle moving in an infinite wall region perturbed by the δ-function for two situations, E < 0 and E > 0. We give a transcendental equation that determines energy levels when E < 0 and prove that there is no bound states when E > 0. The asymptotic behaviors of the center of the delta function approaching to the origin and the infinite are also shown. The results of this paper include special cases in standard quantum mechanics.

Lévy path integrals of particle on circle and some applications

Jianping Dong, Han Geng

Fractional quantum mechanics in the non-relativistic case is described by the space-fractional Schrödinger equation containing the fractional Riesz operator, which is a non-local operator. The non-locality makes it difficult to solve the fractional Schrödinger equation in the local potentials. In this paper, we study the solution of the fractional Schrödinger equation of a free particle moving on a circle by use of the Lévy path integrals approach. We present the Lévy path integrals propagator of a particle on circle and then use it to get the wave functions and energy eigenvalues of the free particle case. In addition, the Laplace transform, energy-time transform, and momentum representation of the free particle kernel are also obtained. The results of this paper contain the ones in standard quantum mechanics as special cases. The problem of a particle on circle is a fundamental problem of path integrals with topological constraints in quantum systems, and the method of Lévy path integrals can be generalized to study more complex local potentials.

Fractional Schrödinger equation for a particle moving in a potential well

Yuri Luchko

In this paper, the fractional Schrödinger equation that contains the quantum Riesz fractional derivative instead of the Laplace operator is revisited for the case of a particle moving in the infinite potential well. In the recent papers [M. Jeng, S.-L.-Y. Xu, E. Hawkins, and J. M. Schwarz, “On the nonlocality of the fractional Schrödinger equation,” J. Math. Phys. 51, 062102 (2010)10.1063/1.3430552] and [S. S. Bayin, “On the consistency of the solutions of the space fractional Schrödinger equation,” J. Math. Phys. 53, 042105 (2012)10.1063/1.4705268] published in this journal, controversial opinions regarding solutions to the fractional Schrödinger equation for a particle moving in the infinite potential well that were derived by Laskin [“Fractals and quantum mechanics,” Chaos 10, 780–790 (2000)10.1063/1.1050284] have been given. In this paper, a thorough mathematical treatment of these matters is provided. The problem under consideration is reformulated in terms of three integral equations with the power kernels. Even if the equations look not very complicated, no solution to these equations in explicit form is known. Still, the obtained equations are used to show that the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the fractional Schrödinger equation for a particle moving in the infinite potential well given by Laskin [“Fractals and quantum mechanics,” Chaos 10, 780–790 (2000)10.1063/1.1050284] and many other papers by different authors cannot be valid as has been first stated by Jeng et al. [“On the nonlocality of the fractional Schrödinger equation,” J. Math. Phys. 51, 062102 (2010)10.1063/1.3430552].

Principles of Fractional Quantum Mechanics

Nick Laskin

A review of fundamentals and physical applications of fractional quantum mechanics has been presented. Fundamentals cover fractional Schrödinger equation, quantum Riesz fractional derivative, path integral approach to fractional quantum mechanics, hermiticity of the Hamilton operator, parity conservation law and the current density. Applications of fractional quantum mechanics cover dynamics of a free particle, new representation for a free particle quantum mechanical kernel, infinite potential well, bound state in δ-potential well, linear potential, fractional Bohr atom and fractional oscillator. We also review fundamentals of the Lévy path integral approach to fractional statistical mechanics.

On the consistency of the solutions of the space fractional Schrödinger equation

Selçuk Ş. Bayın

Recently, it was pointed out that the solutions found in the literature for the space fractional Schrödinger equation in a piecewise manner are wrong, except the case with the delta potential. We re-analyze this problem and show that an exact and a proper treatment of the relevant integral prove otherwise. We also discuss effective potential approach and present a free particle solution for the space and time fractional Schrödinger equation in general coordinates in terms of Fox's H-functions.

Time Fractional Schrodinger Equation Revisited

B. N. Narahari Achar, Bradley Thomas Yale, John W. Hanneken

The time fractional Schrodinger equation (TFSE) for a nonrelativistic particle is derived on the basis of the Feynman path integral method by extending it initially to the case of a "free particle" obeying fractional dynamics, obtained by replacing the integer order derivatives with respect to time by those of fractional order. The equations of motion contain quantities which have "fractional" dimensions, chosen such that the "energy" has the correct dimension [𝑀𝐿 2 /𝑇 2 ].The action 𝑆 is defined as a fractional time integral of the Lagrangian, and a "fractional Planck constant" is introduced. The TFSE corresponds to a "subdiffusion" equation with an imaginary fractional diffusion constant and reproduces the regular Schrodinger equation in the limit of integer order. The present work corrects a number of errors in Naber's work. The correct continuity equation for the probability density is derived and a Green function solution for the case of a "free particle" is obtained. The total probability for a "free" particle is shown to go to zero in the limit of infinite time, in contrast with Naber's result of a total probability greater than unity.A generalization to the case of a particle moving in a potential is also given.

Scattering problems in the fractional quantum mechanics governed by the 2D space-fractional Schrödinger equation

Jianping Dong

The 2D space-fractional Schrödinger equation in the time-independent and time-dependent cases for the scattering problems in the fractional quantum mechanics is studied. We define the Green's functions for the two cases and give the mathematical expression of them in infinite series form and in terms of some special functions. The asymptotic formulas of the Green's functions are also given, and applied to get the approximate wave functions for the fractional quantum scattering problems. These results contain those in the standard (integer) quantum mechanics as special cases, and can be applied to study the complex quantum systems.
