Abstract

A review of fundamentals and physical applications of fractional quantum mechanics has been presented. Fundamentals cover fractional Schrödinger equation, quantum Riesz fractional derivative, path integral approach to fractional quantum mechanics, hermiticity of the Hamilton operator, parity conservation law and the current density. Applications of fractional quantum mechanics cover dynamics of a free particle, new representation for a free particle quantum mechanical kernel, infinite potential well, bound state in δ-potential well, linear potential, fractional Bohr atom and fractional oscillator. We also review fundamentals of the Lévy path integral approach to fractional statistical mechanics.

Fractals and quantum mechanics

Nick Laskin

A new application of a fractal concept to quantum physics has been developed. The fractional path integrals over the paths of the Levy flights are defined. It is shown that if fractality of the Brownian trajectories leads to standard quantum mechanics, then the fractality of the Levy paths leads to fractional quantum mechanics. The fractional quantum mechanics has been developed via the new fractional path integrals approach. A fractional generalization of the Schrodinger equation has been discovered. The new relationship between the energy and the momentum of the nonrelativistic fractional quantum-mechanical particle has been established, and the Levy wave packet has been introduced into quantum mechanics. The equation for the fractional plane wave function has been found. We have derived a free particle quantum-mechanical kernel using Fox's H-function. A fractional generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation has been found. As physical applications of the fractional quantum mechanics we have studied a free particle in a square infinite potential well, the fractional "Bohr atom" and have developed a new fractional approach to the QCD problem of quarkonium. We also discuss the relationships between fractional and the well-known Feynman path integral approaches to quantum mechanics. (c) 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Fractional Quantum Mechanics

Nick Laskin

"Fractional quantum mechanics is a recently emerged and rapidly developing field of quantum physics. This is the first monograph on fundamentals and physical applications of fractional quantum mechanics, written by its founder. The fractional Schrödinger equation and the fractional path integral are new fundamental physical concepts introduced and elaborated in the book. The fractional Schrödinger equation is a manifestation of fractional quantum mechanics. The fractional path integral is a new mathematical tool based on integration over Lévy flights. The fractional path integral method enhances the well-known Feynman path integral framework. Related topics covered in the text include time fractional quantum mechanics, fractional statistical mechanics, fractional classical mechanics and the α-stable Lévy random process. The book is well-suited for theorists, pure and applied mathematicians, solid-state physicists, chemists, and others working with the Schrödinger equation, the path integral technique and applications of fractional calculus in various research areas. It is useful to skilled researchers as well as to graduate students looking for new ideas and advanced approaches."--Publisher's website

Feynman Kernel in Fractional Quantum Systems

Omprakash Atale

In this paper, we have sketched what is to be known as fractional path integral representation in quantum mechanics. We will begin with fractional Schrödinger's equation in the framework of Caputo fractional derivatives. Furthermore, Feynman kernel for derived path integrals is established.

Time Fractional Quantum Mechanics

A time fractional quantum framework has been introduced into quantum mechanics.A new version of the space-time fractional Schrödinger equation has been launched. The introduced space-time fractional Schrödinger equation has a new scale parameter, which is a fractional generalization of Planck's constant in quantum physics. It has been shown that the presence of a time fractional time derivative in the space-time fractional Schrödinger equation significantly impacts quantum mechanical fundamentals.Time fractional quantum mechanical operators of coordinate, momentum and angular momentum were defined and their commutation relationships were established. The pseudo-Hamilton operator was introduced and its Hermicity has been proven. Two new functions related to the Mittag-Leffler function have been introduced to solve the space-time fractional Schrödinger equation.Energy of a time fractional quantum system has been defined and calculated in terms of the newly introduced functions. It has been found that in the framework of time fractional quantum mechanics there are no stationary states, and the eigenvalues of the pseudo-Hamilton operator are not the energy levels of the time fractional quantum system.A free particle solution to the space-time fractional Schrödinger equation was found.A free particle space-time fractional quantum mechanical kernel has been found and expressed in terms of the H-function.Renormalization properties of a free particle solution and the space-time fractional quantum kernel were established. Some particular cases of time fractional quantum mechanics have been analyzed and discussed.

Some physical applications of fractional Schrödinger equation

Xiaoyi Guo, Mingyu Xu

The fractional Schrödinger equation is solved for a free particle and for an infinite square potential well. The fundamental solution of the Cauchy problem for a free particle, the energy levels and the normalized wave functions of a particle in a potential well are obtained. In the barrier penetration problem, the reflection coefficient and transmission coefficient of a particle from a rectangular potential wall is determined. In the quantum scattering problem, according to the fractional Schrödinger equation, the Green’s function of the Lippmann-Schwinger integral equation is given.
