Simulation of XXZ Spin Models Using Sideband Transitions in Trapped Bosonic Gases

Anjun Chu, J. Will, J. Arlt +2 more

We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate the use of motional sidebands in a trapped ensemble of ^{87}Rb atoms to engineer tunable long-range XXZ spin models. We benchmark our simulator by probing a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic dynamical phase transition in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, a collective XXZ model plus additional transverse and longitudinal fields, via Rabi spectroscopy. We experimentally reconstruct the boundary between the dynamical phases, which is in good agreement with mean-field theoretical predictions. Our work introduces new possibilities in quantum simulation of anisotropic spin-spin interactions and quantum metrology enhanced by many-body entanglement.

Quantum critical dynamics of a qubit coupled to an isotropic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick bath

H. T. Quan, Z. D. Wang, C. P. Sun

We explore a dynamic signature of quantum phase transition (QPT) in an isotropic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model by studying the time evolution of a central qubit coupled to it. We evaluate exactly the time-dependent purity, which can be used to measure quantum coherence, of the central qubit. It is found that distinctly different behaviors of the purity as a function of the parameter reveal clearly the QPT point in the system. It is also clarified that the present model is equivalent to an anti--Jaynes-Cummings model under certain conditions.

Simulating the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model in a hybrid quantum system

Yuan Zhou, Sheng-li Ma, Bo Li +3 more

We propose an efficient scheme for simulating the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center ensembles in diamond magnetically coupled to superconducting coplanar waveguide cavities. With the assistance of external microwave driving fields, we show that the interaction of the NV spins can be easily controlled, and several types of the LMG model can be realized by tuning the different parameters. Under the thermal dynamical limit, the distinct nonequilibrium second-order quantum phase transition of the spin ensemble can be achieved at the critical point. Furthermore, we show that the spin squeezed state can be generated by tailoring the LMG Hamiltonian to possess the two-axis countertwisting form in this hybrid quantum system.
