Longitudinal and transverse cooling of a cesium atomic beam using theD1 transition with Stark-effect frequency compensation

Jeng-Rong Yeh, Barbara M. Hoeling, R. J. Knize

We demonstrate the laser cooling of an alkali atomic beam using the D1 transition. Stark-effect frequency tuning is used to compensate the Doppler shift. A cesium beam as slow as 20 m/sec has been obtained. We also demonstrate the simultaneous transverse and longitudinal cooling in the deceleration region before the atoms reach their final velocity. This technique could be used to develop a cold atomic beam with high intensity.

Laser cooling of a cesium beam utilizing Stark effect frequency compensation

Jeng-Rong Yeh, Barbara M. Hoeling, R. J. Knize

Laser cooling of neutral atoms has possible applications such as better frequency standards and high precision spectroscopy. It would be desirable to produce a cold continuous beam of atoms with small transverse velocity to be used in atomic fountains and collision studies. One method to produce a cold continuous beam uses Zeeman effect to compensate the Doppler shift as atoms are slowed. We present a new method for producing a cold Cesium beam using Stark effect frequency tuning.
