Abstract

We investigate the modulational instability of a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in a two-dimensional optical lattice using a time-dependent variational approach. Within this framework, we derive the ordinary differential equations for time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbations. Analyzing these equations and the Hamiltonian of the system, we obtain the modulational instability criterion.

Dynamical instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate with higher-order interactions in an optical potential through a variational approach

Étienne Wamba, Subramaniyan Sabari, Kuppuswamy Porsezian +2 more

We investigate the dynamical instability of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with higher-order interactions immersed in an optical lattice with weak driving harmonic potential. For this, we compute both analytically and numerically a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation with higher-order nonlinearity and external potentials generated by magnetic and optical fields. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive the ordinary differential equations for the time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbation. Through an effective potential, we obtain the modulational instability condition of BECs and discuss the effect of the higher-order interaction in the dynamics of the condensates in presence of optical potential. We perform direct numerical simulations to support our analytical results, and good agreement is found.

A variational approach to the modulational instability of a Bose–Einstein condensate in a parabolic trap

Étienne Wamba, Alidou Mohamadou, Timoléon Crépin Kofané

By means of the time-dependent variational approach, we study the modulational instability of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs), with both two- and three-body interatomic interactions, trapped in an external parabolic potential. Within this framework, we derive and analyse ordinary differential equations for the explicit time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbation. The effect of the trapping coefficients as well as the quintic nonlinear interaction on the dynamics of the BEC are examined. Numerical simulations are carried out in order to support our theoretical findings.

Modulational instability in Bose--Einstein condensate in optical superlattice

E. A. Sorokina, Andrei I. Maimistov

We consider the Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in optical lattice, which is formed from two kinds of deep potentials. The tight-binding approximation was used. Steady state distribution of the probability amplitudes and the site population in the one dimensional optical superlattice were found. It was shown that this solution of the equations which describe the dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensate in superlattice is unstable at the sufficiently high density of the bosons. The expression for increment of the modulational instability was found on base of the linear stability analysis. Numerical simulation demonstrates the evolution of the steady state distributions of bosons into the space array of the solitary peaks before the chaotic regime generation.

Effects of quantum corrections on the modulational instability of Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in a periodic optical lattice

Olivier Tiokeng Lekeufack, Subramaniyan Sabari, Serge Bruno Yamgoué +1 more

Abstract Through a semiquantal procedure, we study the perturbed modulation of amplitude and phase of Gross-Piteavskii equation describing trapped Bose–Einstein condensates in an optical lattice potential. By introducing quantum correctional parameters, the problem is quantized and leads to the derivation of a novel dynamical instability criterion. Additional degrees of freedom carrying quantum properties play a central role on the refine of the instability bandwidth, and, combined to the strength of optical lattice potential, entail unstable modes into full stability. A set of computational tools exhibited various features that bear instability characteristics, to confirm analytically predicted results. The quantum fluctuations thus have a stabilizing effect on the dynamics of harmonically trapped Bose–Einstein condensates in an optical lattice potential.

Interplay of three-body and higher-order interactions on the modulational instability of Bose–Einstein condensate

Subramaniyan Sabari, Olivier Tiokeng Lekeufack, Ramaswamy Radha +1 more

We investigate the modulational instability (MI) of trapped Bose–Einstein condensates with three-body and higher-order interactions employing both semi-analytical and numerical methods. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive variational equations for the time evolution of the amplitude, phase of modulational perturbation, and effective potential of the system. By means of an effective potential, we retrieve the corresponding MI condition of the dynamical system under consideration. The interplay between three-body interaction and higher-order interaction is discussed in detail. The semi-analytical predictions are confirmed through numerical simulations.

Stability of Bose-Einstein condensates in two-dimensional optical lattices

Zhu Chen, Biao Wu

Both Landau instability and dynamical instability of Bose-Einstein condensates in moving two-dimensional optical lattices are investigated numerically and analytically. Phase diagrams for both instabilities are obtained numerically for different system parameters. These phase diagrams show that the Landau instability does not depend on direction for weak lattices while the dynamic instability is direction dependent. These features are explained analytically.
