Abstract

By means of the time-dependent variational approach, we study the modulational instability of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs), with both two- and three-body interatomic interactions, trapped in an external parabolic potential. Within this framework, we derive and analyse ordinary differential equations for the explicit time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbation. The effect of the trapping coefficients as well as the quintic nonlinear interaction on the dynamics of the BEC are examined. Numerical simulations are carried out in order to support our theoretical findings.

Modulational instability of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with two- and three-body interactions

Étienne Wamba, Alidou Mohamadou, Timoléon Crépin Kofané

We investigate analytically and numerically the modulational instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate with both two- and three-body interatomic interactions and trapped in an external parabolic potential. Analytical investigations performed lead us to establish an explicit time-dependent criterion for the modulational instability of the condensate. The effects of the potential as well as of the quintic nonlinear interaction are studied. Direct numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with two- and three-body interactions describing the dynamics of the condensate agree with the analytical predictions.

Interplay of three-body and higher-order interactions on the modulational instability of Bose–Einstein condensate

Subramaniyan Sabari, Olivier Tiokeng Lekeufack, Ramaswamy Radha +1 more

We investigate the modulational instability (MI) of trapped Bose–Einstein condensates with three-body and higher-order interactions employing both semi-analytical and numerical methods. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive variational equations for the time evolution of the amplitude, phase of modulational perturbation, and effective potential of the system. By means of an effective potential, we retrieve the corresponding MI condition of the dynamical system under consideration. The interplay between three-body interaction and higher-order interaction is discussed in detail. The semi-analytical predictions are confirmed through numerical simulations.

Dynamical instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate with higher-order interactions in an optical potential through a variational approach

Étienne Wamba, Subramaniyan Sabari, Kuppuswamy Porsezian +2 more

We investigate the dynamical instability of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with higher-order interactions immersed in an optical lattice with weak driving harmonic potential. For this, we compute both analytically and numerically a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation with higher-order nonlinearity and external potentials generated by magnetic and optical fields. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive the ordinary differential equations for the time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbation. Through an effective potential, we obtain the modulational instability condition of BECs and discuss the effect of the higher-order interaction in the dynamics of the condensates in presence of optical potential. We perform direct numerical simulations to support our analytical results, and good agreement is found.

Modulational instability of a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice through a variational approach

Chen Hai-Jun

We investigate the modulational instability of a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in a two-dimensional optical lattice using a time-dependent variational approach. Within this framework, we derive the ordinary differential equations for time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbations. Analyzing these equations and the Hamiltonian of the system, we obtain the modulational instability criterion.

Matter-wave solitons of Bose–Einstein condensates with time-dependent complex potentials

Emmanuel Kengne, Ahmed Lakhssassi

To analytically investigate the matter-wave solitons of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in time-dependent complex potential, we consider a cubic-quintic Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation with distributed coefficients and a dissipative term. By introducing a suitable ansatz, we establish the criterion of the modulational instability (MI) of the system and present an explicit expression for the growth rate of a purely growing MI. Effects of the parabolic background potential, as well as of the linear potential, the gain/loss parameter, and the two- and three-body interatomic interactions on the MI are investigated. We show how the feeding/loss parameter can be well used to control the instability of the system. The analytical resolution of the considered GP equation leads to exact bright, dark and kink solitary wave solutions which are used to investigate analytically the dynamics of matter-wave solitons in BECs under consideration. These analytical investigations show that the amplitude and the motion of bright, dark and kink solitary waves depend on the strengths of the two- and three-body interatomic interactions, as well as on the strengths of the external trapping potential and the parameter of the gain/loss of atoms in the condensate.

Modulational Instability of Trapped Two-Component Bose–Einstein Condensates*

Jian-Wen Zhou, X. X. Li, Rui Gao +4 more

Abstract The modulational instability of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) under an external parabolic potential is discussed. Based on the trapped two-component Gross–Pitaevskill equations, a time-dependent dispersion relation is obtained analytically by means of the modified lens-type transformation and linear stability analysis. It is shown that a modulational unstable time scale exists for trapped two-component BECs. The modulational properties—which are determined by the wave number, external trapping parameter, intra- and inter-species atomic interactions—are modified significantly. The analytical results are confirmed by direct numerical simulation. Our results provide a criterion for judging the occurrence of instability of the trapped two-component BECs in experiment.
