Anyons, group theory and planar physics

Abstract

Relativistic and nonrelativistic anyons are described in a unified formalism by means of the coadjoint orbits of the symmetry groups in the free case as well as when there is an interaction with a constant electromagnetic field. To deal with interactions we introduce the extended Poincaré and Galilei Maxwell groups. 1

Anyon wave equations and the noncommutative plane

P. A. Horváthy, Mikhail S. Plyushchay

The “Jackiw–Nair” nonrelativistic limit of the relativistic anyon equations provides us with infinite-component wave equations of the Dirac–Majorana–Lévy-Leblond type for the “exotic” particle, associated with the two-fold central extension of the planar Galilei group. An infinite dimensional representation of the Galilei group is found. The velocity operator is studied, and the observable coordinates describing a noncommutative plane are identified.

Symmetry group and symplectic structure for exotic particles in the plane

L. Martina

Position coordinates of \exotic" particles, associated with the 2-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group, do not commute. Realization of the model in solid state Physics, via Berry phase e®ects, and the relation to anyons are discussed.

Relativistic Schrödinger equations

Ll. Bel, E. Ruiz

A representation of the Poincaré group by means of operators acting on the function space of the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics is introduced. The conditions that the Hamiltonian of an interacting particle system must verify in order to define a relativistic invariant Schrödinger equation are found out. The relation with usual quantum constraint theories is also studied.

Galilei Group and Nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics

Jean-Marc Lévy-Leblond

This paper is devoted to the study of the Galilei group and its representations. The Galilei group presents a certain number of essential differences with respect to the Poincaré group. As Bargmann showed, its physical representations, here explicitly constructed, are not true representations but only up-to-a-factor ones. Consequently, in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, the mass has a very special role, and in fact, gives rise to a superselection rule which prevents the existence of unstable particles. The internal energy of a nonrelativistic system is known to be an arbitrary parameter; this is shown to come also from Galilean invariance, because of a nontrivial concept of equivalence between physical representations. On the contrary, the behavior of an elementary system with respect to rotations, is very similar to the relativistic case. We show here, in particular, how the number of polarization states reduces to two for the zero-mass case (though in fact there are no physical zero-mass systems in nonrelativistic mechanics). Finally, we study the two-particle system, where the orbital angular momenta quite naturally introduce themselves through the decomposition of the tensor product of two physical representations.

Whither the Anyon ?

C. R. Hägen

Abstract It is pointed out that Chern-Simons field theories do not always allow an interpretation in terms of anyons even in the nonrelativistic limit. Significantly, when the two approaches are found to differ the former is the one which is compatible with established physical principles. Thus the role left for the anyon is that of a very special subcase of Chern-Simons theories in the limit in which relativistic and spin considerations become irrelevant.

The Relativistic Many Body Problem in Quantum Mechanics

M. Moshińsky

It is well known that the analysis of a relativistic n -body problem invariant under the transformations of the Poincaré group and involving one time has only been done for n =1. For n >1 one uses the second quantization formalism of field theory. In this paper we state it in the ordinary space time coordinates associated with the n-bodies as Dirac did it in the one body case. We apply the formalism first to the two body problem if the interaction is of an harmonic oscillator form and then extend it to n particles. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
