Relativistic Schrödinger equations

Abstract

A representation of the Poincaré group by means of operators acting on the function space of the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics is introduced. The conditions that the Hamiltonian of an interacting particle system must verify in order to define a relativistic invariant Schrödinger equation are found out. The relation with usual quantum constraint theories is also studied.

Schrödinger group and non-linear generalizations of quantum mechanics

Marcel Reginatto

Abstract A free particle may be characterized abstractly in terms of its invariance group. Both the Hamilton-Jacobi and Schrödinger equations for classical and quantum free particles are invariant under the same group, the Schrödinger group. The aim of this paper is to discuss possible restrictions on non-linear generalizations of quantum mechanics. The basic idea is to search for those non-linear generalization of quantum mechanics for which a description of the non-relativistic free particle includes a representation of the Schrödinger group, as in classical and quantum mechanics. This condition imposes strong constraints on possible models of free particles. To carry out such an investigation it is necessary to select an appropriate mathematical formalism, one which can describe physical systems of non-relativistic particles and allows for the incorporation of non-linearities in a natural way. Here the formalism of ensembles on configuration space is used, which is an approach that is capable of describing both classical and quantum systems and, in addition, allows for more general theories that describe mixed classical-quantum systems. Modifications of the equations involving derivatives of up to fourth order are considered

Covariant relativistic quantum theory

Theodore Garavaglia

Covariant classical particle dynamics is described, and the associated covariant relativistic particle quantum mechanics is derived. The invariant symmetric bracket is defined on the space of quantum amplitudes, and its relation to a generalized Hamiltonian dynamics and to a covariant Schrödinger type equation is shown. Examples for relativistic potential problems are solved. Mathematically and physically acceptable probability densities for the Klein-Gordon equation and for the Dirac equation are derived, and a new continuity equation for each case is given. The quantum distribution for mass is discussed, and unambiguous representations of four-velocity and four-acceleration operators are given.

Quantum Mechanics as a Fourier Representation of a Relativistic Quantum Particle

Eliade N. Stefanescu

The starting point of this research is a representation of a quantum particle according to the Schrodinger equation of the conventional quantum mechanics. In this representation, a quantum particle is described by a wave packet in the coordinate space and the conjugated wave packet in the momentum space. The problem is that while in the coordinate space the group velocity is in agreement with one of the Hamilton equations, the group velocity in the momentum space is in contradiction with the other Hamilton equation - a minus sign is missing. Group velocities in agreement with the Hamilton equations are obtained only when in the time dependent phase of a quantum particle wave packet, instead of the Hamiltonian coming from the conventional Schrodinger equation, the Lagrangian is considered. This suggests us to consider the relativistic Lagrangian in the time dependent phase. In this way, the conventional relativistic principle of invariance of the time-space interval gets the more physically understandable form of the invariance of the time dependent phase of a quantum particle - the time dependent phase of a quantum particle is the same in any system of coordinates. Based on the relativistic time dependent phase invariance of a quantum particle, from the group velocities of this particle the relativistic kinematics and dynamics are obtained. The interaction with an electromagnetic field is described by a modification of the time dependent phase with a scalar potential conjugated to time and a vector potential conjugated to the space coordinates. In this paper, we find that, according to the formalism of the general relativity, any matter element in a field of forces is accelerated only perpendicularly to its velocity. This means that the matter propagation of a quantum particle can be conceived in planes perpendicular to velocity, while the mater distribution can be considered in a Fourier representation - quantum waves. We study the quantum particle dynamics in gravitational waves and derive the graviton spin. We consider a quantum particle in electromagnetic field and obtain a Schrödinger-Dirac-type equation, with additional terms describing the velocity dependence of the particle dynamics.

Kinematic Relativity of Quantum Mechanics: Free Particle with Different Boundary Conditions

Gintautas Kamuntavičius, Gintautas Kamuntavičius

An investigation of origins of the quantum mechanical momentum operator has shown that it corresponds to the nonrelativistic momentum of classical special relativity theory rather than the relativistic one, as has been unconditionally believed in traditional relativistic quantum mechanics until now. Taking this correspondence into account, relativistic momentum and energy operators are defined. Schrödinger equations with relativistic kinematics are introduced and investigated for a free particle and a particle trapped in the deep potential well.

Quantum mechanics is a relativity theory

L. Brenig

Non-relativistic quantum mechanics is shown to emerge from classical mechanics through the requirement of a relativity principle based on special transformations acting on position and momentum uncertainties. These transformations keep the Heisenberg inequalities invariant and form a group. They are related to dilatations of space variables provided the quantum potential is added to the classical Hamiltonian functional. The Schrödinger equation appears to have a nonunitary and nonlinear companion acting in another time variable. Evolution in this time seems related to the state vector reduction.

Equations of Relativistic and Quantum Mechanics (without Spin)

Vagram M. Mekhitarian

A relativistically invariant representation of the generalized momentum of a particle in an external field is proposed. In this representation, the dependence of the potentials of the interaction of the particle with the field on the particle velocity is taken into account. The exact correspondence of the expressions of energy and potential energy for the classical Hamiltonian is established, which makes identical the solutions to the problems of mechanics with relativistic and nonrelativistic approaches. The invariance of the proposed representation of the generalized momentum makes it possible to equivalently describe a physical system in geometrically conjugate spaces of kinematic and dynamic variables. Relativistic invariant equations are proposed for the action function and the wave function based on the invariance of the representation of the generalized momentum. The equations have solutions for any values of the constant interaction of the particle with the field, for example, in the problem of a hydrogen-like atom, when the atomic number of the nucleus is Z > 137. Based on the parametric representation of the action, the expression for the canonical Lagrangian, the equations of motion, and the expression for the force acting on the charge are derived when moving in an external electromagnetic field. The Dirac equation with the correct inclusion of the interaction for a particle in an external field is presented. In this form, the solutions of the equations are not limited by the value of the interaction constant. The solutions of the problem of charge motion in a constant electric field, the problems for a particle in a potential well and the passage of a particle through a potential barrier, the problems of motion in an exponential field (Morse), and also the problems of a hydrogen atom are given.
