Exceptional boundary states at c = 1

Abstract

We consider the CFT of a free boson compactified on a circle, such that the compactification radius $R^2$ is an irrational multiple of $R^2_{selfdual}$. Apart from the standard Dirichlet and Neumann boundary states, Friedan suggested [1] that an additional 1-parameter family of boundary states exists. These states break U(1) symmetry of the theory, but still preserve conformal invariance. In this paper we give an explicit construction of these states, show that they are uniquely determined by the Cardy-Lewellen sewing constraints, and we study the spectrum in the `open string channel', which is given here by a continous integral with a nonnegative measure on the space of conformal weights.

Constraining boundary conditions in nonrational CFTs

Yucong Cai, Daniel G. Robbins, Hassaan Saleem

We revisit the question of conformal boundary conditions in the compact free boson CFT in two dimensions. Besides the well-known Neumann and Dirichlet cases, there is an additional proposed one-parameter family of boundary states when the radius is an irrational multiple of the self-dual radius. These additional states have a continuous open string spectrum, and we give an explicit formula for the density of states. We also discuss several pathologies of these states, including the possible violation of the cluster condition, and that they have a divergent g function.

Boundary Conditions, Symmetries, and Bootstrap in 2D Conformal Field Theory

Yucong Cai

This dissertation contains two parts of study on the Friedan states and on the conformal bootstrap with symmetries. The Friedan states are potential physical boundary states of the free boson. However, they exhibited a continuous spectrum in the open string sector, in contrast to more standard examples. The explicit expressions for the density of states of the Friedan states is obtained. Some pathologies and possible contradictions of these states are explored. The $g$ functions of the Friedan states are shown to be infinite, suggesting an infinite number of degrees of freedom in the theory. The modular conformal bootstrap using the moment curve approach and focused on two-dimensional conformal field theory with $c\geq 1$ is discussed. A refinement is made to incorporate conserved currents. Specializing to theories with symmetries, the anyon partition functions, which transform as a vector under modular transformations, are introduced. Applying the moment curve bootstrap to these leads to bounds on the minimum conformal weights in different sectors. In the analytical approach, the correlated bounds between different anyon sectors are obtained, with the abelian symmetries, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_3$, and with the non-abelian symmetry, $S_3$. The explicit bounds on the free boson theories with the presence of the symmetries are then calculated and compared with the bootstrap bounds. Finally, some numerical bootstrap results with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetries are presented.

Fixed-point tensor network for compactified boson conformal field theory

Gong Cheng, Dong-Yu Bao, Zheng‐Cheng Gu

Fixed-point (FP) tensor networks provide a discrete spacetime representation of conformal field theories (CFTs), offering a new route toward understanding holographic duality, generalized symmetries, and even quantum gravity. In this work, we construct FP tensors for the 2D compactified boson theory at a generic compactification radius, an archetypal irrational CFT, using boundary (open-string) data with conformal boundary conditions. We show that the resulting tensors reproduce the closed-string spectrum with high accuracy and generate stable renormalization-group (RG) flows under the tensor complex renormalization algorithm. Moreover, we identify a controllable exactly marginal deformation at the level of a single tensor, enabling flows that move continuously along the $c=1$ moduli space. This framework establishes a concrete lattice-level route toward describing a broad class of 2D irrational CFTs.

Boundary conditions and anomalies of conformal field theories in 1 + 1 dimensions

Linhao Li, Chang-Tse Hsieh, Yuan Yao +1 more

We study a relationship between conformally invariant boundary conditions and anomalies of conformal field theories (CFTs) in $1+1$ dimensions. For a given CFT with a global symmetry, we consider symmetric ``gapping potentials'', which are relevant perturbations to the CFT. If a gapping potential is introduced only in a subregion of the system, it provides a certain boundary condition to the CFT. From this equivalence, if there exists a Cardy boundary state, which is invariant under a symmetry, then the CFT can be gapped with a unique ground state by adding the corresponding gapping potential. This means that the symmetry of the CFT is anomaly free. Using this approach, we systematically deduce the anomaly-free conditions for various types of CFTs with several different symmetries. They include the free compact boson theory, Wess-Zumino-Witten models, and unitary minimal models. When the symmetry of the CFT is anomalous, it implies a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type ingappability of the system. Our results are consistent with, where available, known results in the literature. Moreover, we extend the discussion to other symmetries including spin groups and generalized time-reversal symmetries.

New boundary conformal field theories indexed by the simply laced Lie algebras

A.F. Yegulalp

We consider the field theory of N massless bosons which are free except for an interaction localized on the boundary of their 1+1 dimensional world. The boundary action is the sum of two pieces: a periodic potential and a coupling to a uniform abelian gauge field. Such models arise in open string theory and dissipative quantum mechanics, and possibly in edge state tunneling in the fractional quantized Hall effect. We explicitly show that conformal invariance is unbroken for certain special choices of the gauge field and the periodic potential. These special cases are naturally indexed by semi-simple, simply laced Lie algebras. For each such algebra, we have a discrete series of conformally invariant theories where the potential and gauge field are conveniently given in terms of the weight lattice of the algebra. We compute the exact boundary state for these theories, which explicitly shows the group structure. The partition function and correlation functions are easily computed using the boundary state result.

Boundary Symmetry Breaking in CFT and the string order parameter

Riccarda Bonsignori, Luca Capizzi, Pantelis Panopoulos

Abstract We consider the ground state of a one-dimensional critical quantum system carrying a global symmetry in the bulk, which is explicitly broken by its boundary conditions. We probe the system via a string-order parameter, showing how it detects the symmetry breaking pattern. We give a precise characterization of the mechanism depicted above in Boundary CFT, and we find a general logarithmic scaling for the order parameter. As a first example we analyze the breaking of a U(1) symmetry for complex free theories induced by a boundary pairing term. Moreover, we give predictions for the breaking of U(N) in free theories, arising from a boundary mixing. We test our predictions with numerical calculations for some lattice realizations of free fermionic system with boundary symmetry breaking, finding a good agreement.
