We consider the CFT of a free boson compactified on a circle, such that the compactification radius
R2 is an irrational multiple of
Rselfdual2. Apart from the standard Dirichlet and Neumann boundary states, Friedan suggested [1] that an additional 1-parameter family of boundary states exists. These states break U(1) symmetry of the theory, but still preserve conformal invariance. In this paper we give an explicit construction of these states, show that they are uniquely determined by the Cardy-Lewellen sewing constraints, and we study the spectrum in the `open string channel', which is given here by a continous integral with a nonnegative measure on the space of conformal weights.
This dissertation contains two parts of study on the Friedan states and on the conformal bootstrap with symmetries. The Friedan states are potential physical boundary states of the free boson. However, they exhibited a continuous spectrum in the open string sector, in contrast to more standard examples. The explicit expressions for the density of states of the Friedan states is obtained. Some pathologies and possible contradictions of these states are explored. The
g functions of the Friedan states are shown to be infinite, suggesting an infinite number of degrees of freedom in the theory. The modular conformal bootstrap using the moment curve approach and focused on two-dimensional conformal field theory with
c≥1 is discussed. A refinement is made to incorporate conserved currents. Specializing to theories with symmetries, the anyon partition functions, which transform as a vector under modular transformations, are introduced. Applying the moment curve bootstrap to these leads to bounds on the minimum conformal weights in different sectors. In the analytical approach, the correlated bounds between different anyon sectors are obtained, with the abelian symmetries,
Z2 and
Z3, and with the non-abelian symmetry,
S3. The explicit bounds on the free boson theories with the presence of the symmetries are then calculated and compared with the bootstrap bounds. Finally, some numerical bootstrap results with
Z2 and
Z3 symmetries are presented.
Fixed-point (FP) tensor networks provide a discrete spacetime representation of conformal field theories (CFTs), offering a new route toward understanding holographic duality, generalized symmetries, and even quantum gravity. In this work, we construct FP tensors for the 2D compactified boson theory at a generic compactification radius, an archetypal irrational CFT, using boundary (open-string) data with conformal boundary conditions. We show that the resulting tensors reproduce the closed-string spectrum with high accuracy and generate stable renormalization-group (RG) flows under the tensor complex renormalization algorithm. Moreover, we identify a controllable exactly marginal deformation at the level of a single tensor, enabling flows that move continuously along the
c=1 moduli space. This framework establishes a concrete lattice-level route toward describing a broad class of 2D irrational CFTs.
Abstract Non-compact Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) are central to several aspects of string theory and condensed matter physics. They are characterised, in particular, by the appearance of a continuum of conformal dimensions. Surprisingly, such CFTs have been identified as the continuum limits of lattice models with a finite number of degrees of freedom per site. However, results have so far been restricted to the case of periodic boundary conditions, precluding the exploration via lattice models of aspects of non-compact boundary CFTs and the corresponding D-brane constructions. The present paper follows a series of previous works on a ℤ2-staggered XXZ spin chain, whose continuum limit is known to be a non-compact CFT related with the Euclidian black hole sigma model. By using the relationship of this spin chain with an integrable
D22 D 2 2 vertex model, we here identify integrable boundary conditions that lead to a continuous spectrum of boundary exponents, and thus correspond to non-compact branes. In the context of the Potts model on a square lattice, they correspond to wired boundary conditions at the physical antiferromagnetic critical point. The relations with the boundary parafermion theories are discussed as well. We are also able to identify a boundary renormalisation group flow from the non-compact boundary conditions to the previously studied compact ones.
We study a relationship between conformally invariant boundary conditions and anomalies of conformal field theories (CFTs) in
1+1 dimensions. For a given CFT with a global symmetry, we consider symmetric ``gapping potentials'', which are relevant perturbations to the CFT. If a gapping potential is introduced only in a subregion of the system, it provides a certain boundary condition to the CFT. From this equivalence, if there exists a Cardy boundary state, which is invariant under a symmetry, then the CFT can be gapped with a unique ground state by adding the corresponding gapping potential. This means that the symmetry of the CFT is anomaly free. Using this approach, we systematically deduce the anomaly-free conditions for various types of CFTs with several different symmetries. They include the free compact boson theory, Wess-Zumino-Witten models, and unitary minimal models. When the symmetry of the CFT is anomalous, it implies a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type ingappability of the system. Our results are consistent with, where available, known results in the literature. Moreover, we extend the discussion to other symmetries including spin groups and generalized time-reversal symmetries.
The entanglement spectra for a subsystem in a spin chain fine-tuned to a quantum-critical point contains signatures of the underlying quantum field theory that governs its low-energy properties. For an open chain with given boundary conditions described by a 2D conformal field theory~(CFT), the entanglement spectrum of the left/right half of the system coincides with a boundary CFT spectrum, where one of the boundary conditions arise due to the `entanglement cut'. The latter has been argued to be conformal and has been numerically found to be the `free' boundary condition for Ising, Potts and free boson theories. For these models, the `free' boundary condition for the lattice degree of freedom has a counterpart in the continuum theory. However, this is not true in general. Here, this question is analyzed for the unitary minimal models of 2D CFTs using the density matrix renormalization group technique. The entanglement spectra are computed for blocks of spins in open chains of A-type restricted solid-on-solid models with identical boundary conditions at the ends. The imposed boundary conditions are realized exactly for these lattice models due to their integrable nature. The obtained entanglement spectra are in good agreement with certain boundary CFT spectra. The boundary condition for the entanglement cut is found to be conformal and to coincide with the one with the highest boundary entropy. This identification enables determination of the exponents governing the unusual corrections to the entanglement entropy from the CFT partition functions. These are compared with numerical results.
