Quantum Mechanics of Klein-Gordon Fields I: Hilbert Space, Localized States, and Chiral Symmetry

Abstract

We derive an explicit manifestly covariant expression for the most general positivedefinite and Lorentz-invariant inner product on the space of solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation. This expression involves a one-parameter family of conserved current densities J µ a, with a ∈ (−1,1), that are analogous to the chiral current density for spin half fields. The conservation of J µ a is related to a global gauge symmetry of the Klein-Gordon fields whose gauge group is U(1) for rational a and the multiplicative group of positive real numbers for irrational a. We show that the associated gauge symmetry is responsible for the conservation of the total probability of the localization of the field in space. This provides a simple resolution of the paradoxical situation resulting from the fact that the probability current density for free scalar fields is neither covariant nor conserved. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of our approach for free real scalar fields offering a direct proof of the uniqueness of the relativistically invariant positive-definite inner product on the space of real Klein-Gordon fields. We also explore an extension of our results to scalar fields minimally coupled to an electromagnetic field.

Conserved Current Densities, Localization Probabilities, and a New Global Gauge Symmetry of Klein-Gordon Fields

Mostafazadeh, A., Farhad Zamani

For free Klein-Gordon fields, we construct a one-parameter family of conserved current densities $J_a^μ$, with $a\in(-1,1)$, and use the latter to yield a manifestly covariant expression for the most general positive-definite and Lorentz-invariant inner product on the space of solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation. Employing a recently developed method of constructing the Hilbert space and observables for Klein-Gordon fields, we then obtain the probability current density ${\cal J}_a^μ$ for the localization of a Klein-Gordon field in space. We show that in the nonrelativistic limit both $J_a^μ$ and ${\cal J}_a^μ$ tend to the probability current density for the localization of a nonrelativistic free particle in space, but that unlike $J_a^μ$ the current density ${\cal J}_a^μ$ is neither covariant nor conserved. Because the total probability may be obtained by integrating either of these two current densities over the whole space, the conservation of the total probability may be viewed as a consequence of the local conservation of $J_a^μ$. The latter is a manifestation of a previously unnoticed global gauge symmetry of the Klein-Gordon fields. The corresponding gauge group is U(1) if the parameter $a$ is rational. It is the multiplicative group of positive real numbers if $a$ is irrational. We also discuss an extension of our results to Klein-Gordon fields minimally coupled to an electromagnetic field.

Quantum mechanics of Proca fields

Farhad Zamani, Alí Mostafazadeh

We construct the most general physically admissible positive-definite inner product on the space of Proca fields. Up to a trivial scaling this defines a five-parameter family of Lorentz invariant inner products that we use to construct a genuine Hilbert space for the quantum mechanics of Proca fields. If we identify the generator of time translations with the Hamiltonian, we obtain a unitary quantum system that describes first-quantized Proca fields and does not involve the conventional restriction to the positive-frequency fields. We provide a rather comprehensive analysis of this system. In particular, we examine the conserved current density responsible for the conservation of the probabilities, explore the global gauge symmetry underlying the conservation of the probabilities, obtain a probability current density, construct position, momentum, helicity, spin, and angular momentum operators, and determine the localized Proca fields. We also compute the generalized parity (P), generalized time-reversal (T), and generalized charge or chirality (C) operators for this system and offer a physical interpretation for its PT-, C-, and CPT-symmetries.

On some meaningful inner product for real Klein-Gordon fields with positive semi-definite norm

Frieder Kleefeld

A simple derivation of a meaningful, manifestly covariant inner product for real Klein-Gordon (KG) fields with positive semi-definite norm is provided which turns out - assuming a symmetric bilinear form - to be the real-KG-field limit of the inner product for complex KG fields reviewed by A. Mostafazadeh and F. Zamani in December, 2003, and February, 2006 (quant-ph/0312078, quant-ph/0602151, quant-ph/0602161). It is explicitly shown that the positive semi-definite norm associated with the derived inner product for real KG fields measures the number of active positive and negative energy Fourier-modes of the real KG field on the relativistic mass-shell. The very existence of an inner product with positive semi-definite norm for the considered real, i.e. neutral, KG fields shows that the metric operator entering the inner product does not contain the charge-conjugation operator. This observation sheds some additional light on the meaning of the by C.M. Bender, D.C. Brody and H.F. Jones identified C operator in the CPT inner product of PT-symmetric Quantum Mechanics.

Generalized PT-, C-, and CPT-Symmetries, Position Operators, and Localized States of Klein-Gordon Fields

Mostafazadeh, A

We construct a concrete realization of the generalized parity (P), time-reversal (T), and charge-conjugation (C) operators, that were initially defined in the study of the PT-symmetric and pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians, for Klein-Gordon fields. We show that PT and C operators, that signify certain symmetries of the system, correspond to the ordinary time-reversal and charge-conjugation transformations, respectively. Furthermore, we construct a positive-definite and relativistically invariant inner product on the space of Klein-Gordon fields and show that the generator h of time-translations viewed as acting in the Hilbert space ${cal H}$ defined by this inner product is Hermitian. The quantum system having ${cal H}$ as its Hilbert space and h as its Hamiltonian is unitarily equivalent to the one defined by a Hermitian Hamiltonian acting in the Hilbert space $L^2(R^3)oplus L^2(R^3)$. We give the explicit form of the corresponding unitary transformation and use it to construct position operators, localized and coherent states, and a set of wave functions for the Klein-Gordon fields. Our approach provides a consistent quantum mechanical description of the Klein-Gordon fields that admits a genuine probabilistic interpretation.

Quantum mechanics of a photon

Hassan Babaei, Ali Mostafazadeh

A first-quantized free photon is a complex massless vector field A=(Aμ) whose field strength satisfies Maxwell’s equations in vacuum. We construct the Hilbert space H of the photon by endowing the vector space of the fields A in the temporal-Coulomb gauge with a positive-definite and relativistically invariant inner product. We give an explicit expression for this inner product, identify the Hamiltonian for the photon with the generator of time translations in H, determine the operators representing the momentum and the helicity of the photon, and introduce a chirality operator whose eigenfunctions correspond to fields having a definite sign of energy. We also construct a position operator for the photon whose components commute with each other and with the chirality and helicity operators. This allows for the construction of the localized states of the photon with a definite sign of energy and helicity. We derive an explicit formula for the latter and compute the corresponding electric and magnetic fields. These turn out to diverge not just at the point where the photon is localized but on a plane containing this point. We identify the axis normal to this plane with an associated symmetry axis and show that each choice of this axis specifies a particular position operator, a corresponding position basis, and a position representation of the quantum mechanics of a photon. In particular, we examine the position wave functions determined by such a position basis, elucidate their relationship with the Riemann-Silberstein and Landau-Peierls wave functions, and give an explicit formula for the probability density of the spatial localization of the photon.

PROBABILITY CURRENT IN ZERO-SPIN RELATIVISTIC QUANTUM MECHANICS

T. FÜLÖP, T. Matolcsi

We show that the antisymmetric spinor tensor representation of spin-0 relativistic quantum mechanics provides a conserved current with positive definite timelike component, interpretable as probability density. The construction runs in complete analogy to the spin-1/2 case, and provides an analogously natural one-particle Hilbert space description for spin 0. Except for the free particle, the obtained formulation proves to be inequivalent to the one based on the Klein--Gordon equation. The second quantized version may lead to new field theoretical interaction terms for zero-spin particles.
