PROBABILITY CURRENT IN ZERO-SPIN RELATIVISTIC QUANTUM MECHANICS

Abstract

We show that the antisymmetric spinor tensor representation of spin-0 relativistic quantum mechanics provides a conserved current with positive definite timelike component, interpretable as probability density. The construction runs in complete analogy to the spin-1/2 case, and provides an analogously natural one-particle Hilbert space description for spin 0. Except for the free particle, the obtained formulation proves to be inequivalent to the one based on the Klein--Gordon equation. The second quantized version may lead to new field theoretical interaction terms for zero-spin particles.

Spinor equations in relativistic quantum mechanics

Egon Marx

A set of two first-order equations for classical spinor fields are used to formulate the relativistic quantum mechanics (RQM) of a single massive spin-1/2 particle. These equations are generalized Weyl equations and they are not equivalent to the Dirac equation. They lead to a conserved charge that is not positive definite, thus allowing for a probabilistic interpretation of the wave function in RQM. The charge is also conserved when the fields interact with a scalar field through the charge-current densities.

Quantum Mechanics of Klein-Gordon Fields I: Hilbert Space, Localized States, and Chiral Symmetry

Alí Mostafazadeh, Farhad Zamani

We derive an explicit manifestly covariant expression for the most general positivedefinite and Lorentz-invariant inner product on the space of solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation. This expression involves a one-parameter family of conserved current densities J µ a, with a ∈ (−1,1), that are analogous to the chiral current density for spin half fields. The conservation of J µ a is related to a global gauge symmetry of the Klein-Gordon fields whose gauge group is U(1) for rational a and the multiplicative group of positive real numbers for irrational a. We show that the associated gauge symmetry is responsible for the conservation of the total probability of the localization of the field in space. This provides a simple resolution of the paradoxical situation resulting from the fact that the probability current density for free scalar fields is neither covariant nor conserved. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of our approach for free real scalar fields offering a direct proof of the uniqueness of the relativistically invariant positive-definite inner product on the space of real Klein-Gordon fields. We also explore an extension of our results to scalar fields minimally coupled to an electromagnetic field.

Quantum Physics, Relativity, and Complex Spacetime: Towards a New Synthesis

Gerald Kaiser

The positivity of the energy in relativistic quantum mechanics implies that wave functions can be continued analytically to the forward tube T in complex spacetime. For Klein-Gordon particles, we interpret T as an extended (8D) classical phase space containing all 6D classical phase spaces as symplectic submanifolds. The evaluation maps $e_z: f\to f(z)$ of wave functions on T are relativistic coherent states reducing to the Gaussian coherent states in the nonrelativistic limit. It is known that no covariant probability interpretation exists for Klein-Gordon particles in real spacetime because the time component of the conserved "probability current" can attain negative values even for positive-energy solutions. We show that this problem is solved very naturally in complex spacetime, where $|f(x-iy)|^2$ is interpreted as a probability density on all 6D phase spaces in T which, when integrated over the "momentum" variables y, gives a conserved spacetime probability current whose time component is a positive regularization of the usual one. Similar results are obtained for Dirac particles, where the evaluation maps $e_z$ are spinor-valued relativistic coherent states. For free quantized Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields, the above formalism extends to n-particle/antiparticle coherent states whose scalar products are Wightman functions. The 2-point function plays the role of a reproducing kernel for the one-particle and antiparticle subspaces.

Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Arjun Sharma

The chapter covers some of the essential aspects of relativistic quantum mechanics. The Klein-Gordon equation and its solution in coulombic fields, how to interpret probability density and probability current derived from the Klein-Gordon equation, derivation of the Dirac equation and its covariant form, probability density and probability current for Dirac equation, positive and negative energy eigenvalues in the case of a free particle, constants of motion for relativistic treatment, presence of spin magnetic moment and spin-orbit interaction energy in the Dirac equation, and the solution of the Dirac equation for central potentials and for the hydrogen atom are presented with elegant mathematical treatment and physical interpretations. A modern and reader friendly approach is adopted for derivation of the Dirac equation, constants of motion, and for the solution of the Dirac equation for central potentials. Solved examples and unsolved exercises relating to fundamental concepts of relativistic quantum mechanics are added towards the end of chapter.

Probability density of relativistic spinless particles

MohammadJavad Kazemi, Hadi Hashamipour, Mohammad Hosein Barati

In this paper, a conserved current for Klein--Gordon equation is derived. It is shown, for ($1+1$) dimensions, the first component of this current is non-negative and reduces to ${|\ensuremath{\phi}|}^{2}$ in nonrelativistic limit. Therefore, it can be interpreted as the probability density of spinless particles. In addition, main issues pertaining to localization in relativistic quantum theory are discussed, with a demonstration on how this definition of probability density can overcome such obstacles. Our numerical study indicates that the probability density deviates significantly from ${|\ensuremath{\phi}|}^{2}$ only when the uncertainty in momentum is greater than ${m}_{0}c$.

On The Probability Density of Spinless Particles

MohammadJavad Kazemi, Hadi Hashamipour, Mohammad Hosein Barati

In this paper, we shall derive a new conserved current for Klein-Gordon equation. The first component of this current is non-negative and reduces to $|\phi|^2$ in the non-relativistic limit. Therefore, it can be interpreted as a suitable probability density for spinless particles. In addition, this current is time-like and so prevents faster than light particle propagation. We will see the probability density has a considerable deviation from $|\phi|^2$ providing the uncertainty in momentum is much greater than $m_0c$.
