Geometric Phase for degenerate states of spin-1 and spin-1/2 pair

Abstract

The geometric phase of a bi-particle model is discussed. For different initial states, especially when the initial state is pure or mixed, the geometric phase will show different properties. The relationship between the geometric phase and the entanglement or mixedness of the initial state is considered.

Geometric phase for degenerate states of spin-1 and spin-1/2 pair

Guo-Qiang Zhu

Abstract The geometric phase of a bi-particle model is discussed. One can drive the system to evolve by applying an external magnetic field, thereby controlling the geometric phase. The model has degenerate lowest-energy eigenvectors. The initial state is assumed to be the linear superposition or mixture of the eigenvectors. The relationship between the geometric phase and the structures of the initial state is considered, and the results are extended to a more general model.

Geometric phase for entangled spin pairs

Erik Sjöqvist

The entanglement dependence of the noncyclic geometric phase is analyzed. A pair of noninteracting spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles prepared in an arbitrarily entangled state and precessing in an external time-independent uniform magnetic field is considered. It is shown that the geometric phase reduces to a sum of one-particle geometric phases for product states and takes on the two values corresponding to the phase factors $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ for maximally entangled states. If only one of the particles is affected by the magnetic field it is demonstrated that the influence of entanglement on the geometric phase may be interpreted as an effective reduction of the degree of polarization of the affected particle. The generalization to more than two precessing spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles, in the particular case where Schmidt decompositions exists, is briefly outlined. The geometric phase for a pair of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles with a spin-spin interaction is calculated. In this model we show that the noncyclic geometric phase for a certain class of states may be interpreted solely in terms of the solid angle enclosed by the geodesically closed curve on a two-sphere parametrized by the evolving Schmidt coefficients. This suggests a geometric interpretation of Schmidt decompositions for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ pairs analogous to that of the Poincar\'e sphere for a single spin $\frac{1}{2}.$

Geometric phases in the presence of a composite environment

Paula I. Villar, Fernando C. Lombardo

We compute the geometric phase for a spin-1/2 particle under the presence of a composite environment, composed of an external bath (modeled by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators) and another spin-1/2 particle. We consider both cases: an initial entanglement between the spin-1/2 particles and an initial product state in order to see if the initial entanglement has an enhancement effect on the geometric phase of one of the spins. We follow the nonunitary evolution of the reduced density matrix and evaluate the geometric phase for a single two-level system. We also show that the initial entanglement enhances the sturdiness of the geometric phase under the presence of an external composite environment.

On the geometric phases in entangled states

Melik Emirhan Tunalıoğlu, Hasan Özgür Çıldıroğlu, A. U. Yilmazer

Correlation relations for the spin measurements on a pair of entangled particles scattered by the two separate arms of interferometers in hybrid setups of different types are investigated. Concurrence, entanglement of formation, quantum fidelity, Bures distance are used to clarify how the geometric phase affects the initial bipartite state. This affect causes a quantum interference due to the movement of charged particles in regions where electromagnetic fields are not present. We shown that in some cases the geometric phase information is carried over to the final bipartite entangled state.

Geometric phase for entangled states of two spin-1/2 particles in rotating magnetic field

D. M. Tong, L. C. Kwek, C. H. Oh

The geometric phase for states of two spin-1/2 particles in rotating magnetic field is calculated, in particular, the noncyclic and cyclic non-adiabatic phases for the general case are explicitly derived and discussed. We find that the cyclic geometric phase for the entangled state can always be written as a sum of the phases of the two particles respectively; the same cannot be said for the noncyclic phase. We also investigate the geometric phase of mixed state of one particle in a biparticle system, and we find that the geometric phase for one subsystem of an entangled system is always affected by another subsystem of the entangled system.

Effects of entanglement on off-diagonal geometric phases

H. T. Cui, L. C. Wang, X. X. Yi

The effect of entanglement on off-diagonal geometric phases is investigated in the paper. Two spin-(1/2) particles in magnetic fields along the y direction are taken as an example. Three parameters (the purity of state r , the mixing angle θ and the relative phase β) are chosen to characterize the initial states. The nodal points at which the usual geometric phases disappear are calculated and illustrated as a function of the three parameters.
