Abstract

The geometric phase for states of two spin-1/2 particles in rotating magnetic field is calculated, in particular, the noncyclic and cyclic non-adiabatic phases for the general case are explicitly derived and discussed. We find that the cyclic geometric phase for the entangled state can always be written as a sum of the phases of the two particles respectively; the same cannot be said for the noncyclic phase. We also investigate the geometric phase of mixed state of one particle in a biparticle system, and we find that the geometric phase for one subsystem of an entangled system is always affected by another subsystem of the entangled system.

Geometric phase for entangled spin pairs

Erik Sjöqvist

The entanglement dependence of the noncyclic geometric phase is analyzed. A pair of noninteracting spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles prepared in an arbitrarily entangled state and precessing in an external time-independent uniform magnetic field is considered. It is shown that the geometric phase reduces to a sum of one-particle geometric phases for product states and takes on the two values corresponding to the phase factors $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ for maximally entangled states. If only one of the particles is affected by the magnetic field it is demonstrated that the influence of entanglement on the geometric phase may be interpreted as an effective reduction of the degree of polarization of the affected particle. The generalization to more than two precessing spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles, in the particular case where Schmidt decompositions exists, is briefly outlined. The geometric phase for a pair of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles with a spin-spin interaction is calculated. In this model we show that the noncyclic geometric phase for a certain class of states may be interpreted solely in terms of the solid angle enclosed by the geodesically closed curve on a two-sphere parametrized by the evolving Schmidt coefficients. This suggests a geometric interpretation of Schmidt decompositions for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ pairs analogous to that of the Poincar\'e sphere for a single spin $\frac{1}{2}.$

Berry's geometric phase for two spin-1/2 particles in an entangled quantum system

Qing‐Hu Zhong

The entanglement dependence of Berry's geometric phase is studied in the case of two spin-1/2 particles with a spin-spin interaction.Berry's phases for two spin-1/2 entanglement particles in the presence of spin-spin interaction and noninteraction are calculated, respectively. The expression of calculating geometric phase, when entanglement vanishes,is obtained. Moreover, the geometric phase is discussed when only one of the two particles is affected by the external magnetic field. It is shown that its geometric phase is not equal to that of single particle which is acted by the external magnetic field, and the result is related toαthat affect the strength of entanglement. A general entanglement-dependence geometric phase is formulated.

Geometric phase in quantum mechanics and calculation for spin one-half in a rotating magnetic field

Paul Bracken

A mathematical formalism for describing geometric phases is presented. A development of the geometric phase is given, which is valid for noncyclic nonadiabatic processes. The result is used to calculate exactly the geometric phase for a quantum system that is made up of a spin one-half system in a rotating magnetic field.

Relation between geometric phases of entangled bipartite systems and their subsystems

D. M. Tong, Erik Sjöqvist, L. C. Kwek +2 more

This paper focuses on the geometric phase of entangled states of bipartite systems under bilocal unitary evolution. We investigate the relation between the geometric phase of the system and those of the subsystems. It is shown that (1) the geometric phase of cyclic entangled states with nondegenerate eigenvalues can always be decomposed into a sum of weighted nonmodular pure state phases pertaining to the separable components of the Schmidt decomposition, although the same cannot be said in the noncyclic case, and (2) the geometric phase of the mixed state of one subsystem is generally different from that of the entangled state even if the other subsystem is kept fixed, but the two phases are the same when the evolution operator satisfies conditions where each component in the Schmidt decomposition is parallel transported.

Geometric phase and Berry's phase for the entangled system of pure state with two particles

Zheng Hai-xia

Above the work of E.Sjoqvist, the geometric phase and the entanglement of the system composed of a pair of noninteracting spin-1/ 2 particles pressing in an external time-independent magnetic field are considered using a new method. The relation between them is gained newly:only if the entanglement is zero will the geometric phase of the composite systems reduce to a sum of one-particle geometric phase.Further more, the Berry's phase and the entanglement of the system composed of a pair of noninteracting spin-1/2 particles pressing in a rotating magnetic field are studied. The same conclusion is gained.

Non-adiabatic Non-cyclic Generalization of the Berry Phase for a Spin-1/2 Particle in a Rotating Magnetic Field

Siamak Sadat Gousheh, Azadeh Mohammadi, Leila Shahkarami

In this paper we define a non-dynamical phase for a spin-1/2 particle in a rotating magnetic field in the non-adiabatic non-cyclic case, and this phase can be considered as a generalized Berry phase. We show that this phase reduces to the geometric Berry phase, in the adiabatic limit, up to a factor independent of the parameters of the system. We could add an arbitrary phase to the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian due to the gauge freedom. Then, we fix this arbitrary phase by comparing our Berry phase in the adiabatic limit with the Berry's result for the same system. Also, in the extreme non-adiabatic limit our Berry phase vanishes, modulo $2π$, as expected. Although, our Berry phase is in general complex, it becomes real in the expected cases: the adiabatic limit, the extreme non-adiabatic limit, and the points at which the state of the system returns to its initial form, up to a phase factor. Therefore, this phase can be considered as a generalization of the Berry phase. Moreover, we investigate the relation between the value of the generalized Berry phase, the period of the states and the period of the Hamiltonian.
