Classical and Quantum Limits in Bohmian Quantum Cosmology

Abstract

In this paper we have investigated the classical limit in Bohmian quantum cosmology. It is observed that in the quantum regime where the quantum potential is greater than the classical one, one has an expansion in terms of negative powers of the Planck constant. But in the classical limit there are regions having positive powers of the Planck constant, and regions having negative powers and also regions having both. The conclusion is that the Bohmian classical limit cannot be obtained by letting the Planck constant goes to zero.

Quantum dynamics with two Planck constants and the semiclassical limit

Lajos Diósi

The mathematical possibility of coupling two quantum dynamic systems having two different Planck constants, respectively, is investigated. It turns out that such canonical dynamics are always irreversible. Semiclassical dynamics is obtained by letting one of the two Planck constants go to zero. This semiclassical dynamics will preserve positivity, as expected, so an improvement of the earlier proposals by Aleksandrov and by Boucher and Traschen is achieved. Coupling of quantized matter to gravity is illustrated by a simplistic example.

QUANTUM COSMOLOGY AND THE ACCELERATED UNIVERSE

Eduardo Sergio Santini

The quantized Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model minimally coupled to a free massless scalar field is studied and interpreted in the Bohm-de Broglie framework. We analyze the quantum bohmian trajectories corresponding to a certain class of gaussian packets, solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We show that these bohmian trajectories undergo an accelerated expansion in the middle of its evolution due to the presence of quantum cosmological effects in this period. It is shown that the luminosity-redshift relation in the quantum cosmological model can be made close to the corresponding relation coming from the classical model suplemented by a cosmological constant, for $z<1$. In this way we have the posibility of interpreting the present observations of high redshift supernovae as the consequence of a quantum cosmological effect.

Bohmian Classical Limit in Bounded Regions

Davide Romano

Bohmian mechanics is a realistic interpretation of quantum theory. It shares the same ontology of classical mechanics: particles following continuous trajectories in space through time. For this ontological continuity, it seems to be a good candidate for recovering the classical limit of quantum theory. Indeed, in a Bohmian framework, the issue of the classical limit reduces to showing how classical trajectories can emerge from Bohmian ones, under specific classicality assumptions. In this paper, we shall focus on a technical problem that arises from the dynamics of a Bohmian system in bounded regions; and we suggest that a possible solution is supplied by the action of environmental decoherence. However, we shall show that, in order to implement decoherence in a Bohmian framework, a stronger condition is required (disjointness of supports) rather than the usual one (orthogonality of states).

Synthesis of the Planck and Bohr formulations of the correspondence principle

Ghazi Q. Hassoun, Donald H. Kobe

Planck formulated the correspondence principle between quantum and classical mechanics as the limit in which the Planck constant h goes to zero. Bohr formulated the correspondence principle to be the limit of large quantum numbers. For three common quantum mechanical systems it is shown that in order for eigenvalues of quantum mechanical observables to have meaningful classical limits, it is necessary to take the double limit as both the Planck constant goes to zero and the quantum number goes to infinity, subject to the constraint that their product is equal to an appropriate classical action. This synthesis of the Bohr and Planck formulations of the correspondence principle is also used to show that the quantum mechanical transition frequency between adjacent levels approaches the corresponding classical frequency. The features these systems have in common in their classical limit are explained by general considerations of the classical limit of the Schrödinger equation.

Gravitational reduction of the wave function based on Bohmian quantum potential

Faramarz Rahmani, Mehdi Golshani, Ghadir Jafari

In objective gravitational reduction of the wave function of a quantum system, the classical limit of the system is obtained in terms of the objective properties of the system. On the other hand, in Bohmian quantum mechanics the usual criterion for getting classical limit is the vanishing of the quantum potential or the quantum force of the system, which suffers from the lack of an objective description. In this regard, we investigated the usual criterion of getting the classical limit of a free particle in Bohmian quantum mechanics. Then we argued how it is possible to have an objective gravitational classical limit related to the Bohmian mechanical concepts like quantum potential or quantum force. Also we derived a differential equation related to the wave function reduction. An interesting connection will be made between Bohmian mechanics and gravitational concepts.
