QUANTUM COSMOLOGY AND THE ACCELERATED UNIVERSE

Abstract

The quantized Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model minimally coupled to a free massless scalar field is studied and interpreted in the Bohm-de Broglie framework. We analyze the quantum bohmian trajectories corresponding to a certain class of gaussian packets, solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We show that these bohmian trajectories undergo an accelerated expansion in the middle of its evolution due to the presence of quantum cosmological effects in this period. It is shown that the luminosity-redshift relation in the quantum cosmological model can be made close to the corresponding relation coming from the classical model suplemented by a cosmological constant, for $z<1$. In this way we have the posibility of interpreting the present observations of high redshift supernovae as the consequence of a quantum cosmological effect.

Bohmian quantum cosmology from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation

Spyros Basilakos, Gerasimos Kouniatalis, Emmanuel N. Saridakis +1 more

We construct a Bohmian quantum cosmological model for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled with a single scalar field whose potential provides a unified description of cold dark matter and dark energy at the background level. Starting from the Einstein-Hilbert action supplemented by a scalar field, we derive the minisuperspace Lagrangian and the associated canonical Hamiltonian formulation. By means of a nontrivial canonical transformation, the minisuperspace dynamics is mapped into that of a two-dimensional hyperbolic oscillator with a fixed frequency ratio, rendering the Wheeler-DeWitt equation exactly solvable by separation of variables. The resulting Wheeler-DeWitt solutions are expressed in terms of parabolic cylinder functions and are parametrised by a continuous separation constant, reflecting the constrained nature of the theory and the absence of a standard Schrödinger time parameter. Adopting the de Broglie-Bohm formulation, we derive deterministic guidance equations in minisuperspace and construct a well-defined Bohmian Hubble parameter directly in terms of the pilot-wave phase. Finally, we present a Wheeler-DeWitt-derived toy wave function for which the Bohmian trajectories and the associated cosmological expansion history can be obtained analytically, reproducing the late-time ΛCDM behaviour while exhibiting quantum modifications at earlier epochs.

Quantum cosmology with varying speed of light and Bohmian trajectories

Fatimah Shojai, Saeid Molladavoudi

The classical trajectories for FLRW universe with varying speed of light are obtained for the cases in which the cosmological constant depends or not depend on the velocity of light. The theory is then quantized and the corresponding WDW equation is solved. It is shown that the method of causal interpretation of Bohm can be applied successfully to the theory. Finally the Bohmian trajectories are obtained and compared with the classical ones. 1 1

Quintom potentials from quantum cosmology

J. Socorro, Paulo A. Rodríguez

We derive a special of scalar field quintom potential using the isotropic flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model from canonical quantum cosmology under determined conditions in the evolution of our universe, using the Bohmian formalism. We obtain a family of potentials corresponding to the most probable to study the inflation phenomenon. Also we present exact solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equations in closed form.

Consistent probabilities in Wheeler-DeWitt quantum cosmology

David Craig, Parampreet Singh

We give an explicit, rigorous framework for calculating quantum probabilities in a model theory of quantum gravity. Specifically, we construct the decoherence functional for the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with a free, massless, minimally coupled scalar field, thus providing a complete decoherent histories formulation for this quantum cosmological model. The decoherence functional is applied to study predictions concerning the model's Dirac (relational) observables; the behavior of semiclassical states and superpositions of such states; and to study the singular behavior of quantum Wheeler-DeWitt universes. Within this framework, rigorous formulas are given for calculating the corresponding probabilities from the wave function when those probabilities may be consistently defined, thus replacing earlier heuristics for interpreting the wave function of the universe with explicit constructions. It is shown according to a rigorously formulated standard, and in a quantum-mechanically consistent way, that in this quantization these models are generically singular. Independent of the choice of state we show that the probability for these Wheeler-DeWitt quantum universes to ever encounter a singularity is unity. In addition, the relation between histories formulations of quantum theory and relational Dirac observables is clarified.

Bouncing and inflationary dynamics in quantum cosmology in the de Broglie–Bohm interpretation

Gustavo S. Vicente, Rudnei O. Ramos, Vitória Nunes Magalhães

The quantum cosmology of the flat Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker universe, filled with a scalar field, is considered in the de Broglie--Bohm (dBB) interpretation framework. A stiff-matter quantum bounce solution is obtained. The bouncing and subsequent pre-inflationary and inflationary dynamics are studied in details. We consider some representative primordial inflation models as examples, for which analytical expressions characterizing the dynamical quantities can be explicitly derived. The dependence of the inflationary dynamics on the quantum bounce parameters is then analyzed. The parameters emerging from our description are constrained by requiring the produced dynamics to be in accordance with some key cosmological quantities. The constraining conditions are also illustrated through regions of parameter space in terms of the bounce quantities.

Quantum Potential and Cosmological Singularities

Sang Pyo Kim

We apply the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the quantum FRW cosmological model with a minimal massless scalar field. We find that the quantum FRW cosmological model has quantum potential dominated solutions that avoid the initial and the final cosmological singularities. It is suggested that the quantum potential and the back-reaction of geometry and matter fields may change the property of the cosmological singularities of the Universe. 1 E-mail: sangkim@knusun1.kunsan.ac.kr 1 Introduction One of the most prominent classical-mechanical problems that quantum mechanics can solve is the classical singularity. For example, an electron of an atom suffers from the instability that due to the infinitely negative Coulomb potential and the electron in a zero-momentum state should fall into the infinite potential 2 . In quantum mechanics, however, the s-wavefunction (zero orbital angular momentum state) of the electron has zero probability at the singula...
