Boundary States, Extended Symmetry Algebra and Module Structure for certain Rational Torus Models

Abstract

The massless bosonic field compactified on the circle of rational R 2 is reexamined in the presense of boundaries. A particular class of models corresponding to R 2 = 1 2k is distinguished by demanding the existence of a consistent set of Newmann boundary states. The boundary states are constructed explicitly for these models and the fusion rules are derived from them. These are the ones prescribed by the Verlinde formula from the S-matrix of the theory. In addition, the extended symmetry algebra of these theories is constructed which is responsible for the rationality of these theories. Finally, the chiral space of these models is shown to split into a direct sum of irreducible modules of the extended symmetry algebra. 1

Boundary Structure and Module Decomposition of the Bosonic $Z_2$ Orbifold Models with $R^2=1/2k$

Hatzinikitas, A, Smyrnakis, J M

The $Z_2$ bosonic orbifold models with compactification radius $R^2=1/2k$ are examined in the presence of boundaries. Demanding the extended algebra characters to have definite conformal dimension and to consist of an integer sum of Virasoro characters, we arrive at the right splitting of the partition function. This is used to derive a free field representation of a complete, consistent set of boundary states, without resorting to a basis of the extended algebra Ishibashi states. Finally the modules of the extended symmetry algebra that correspond to the finitely many characters are identified inside the direct sum of Fock modules that constitute the space of states of the theory.

BOUNDARY STATES AND BROKEN BULK SYMMETRIES IN WAr MINIMAL MODELS

ALEXANDRE F. CALDEIRA, J. F. WHEATER

We study the boundary states of (p', p) rational conformal field theories having a W symmetry of the type A(r) using the multi-component free-field formalism. The classification of primary fields for these models given in the literature is shown to be incomplete; we give the correct classification by demanding modular covariance and show that the resulting modular S matrix satisfies all the necessary conditions. Basis states satisfying the boundary conditions are found in the form of coherent states and as expected we find that W violating states can be found for all these models. We construct consistent physical boundary for all the rank 2 (p+1, p) models (of which the already known case of the 3-state Potts model is the simplest example) and find that the W violating sector possesses a direct analogue of the Verlinde formula.

Radford, Drinfeld and Cardy boundary states in the (1,p) logarithmic conformal field models

Azat M. Gainutdinov, I. Yu. Tipunin

We introduce ( p − 1) pseudocharacters in the space of (1, p ) model vacuum torus amplitudes to complete the distinguished basis in the 2 p -dimensional fusion algebra to a basis in the whole (3 p − 1)-dimensional space of torus amplitudes, and the structure constants in this basis are (not necessarily non-negative) integer numbers. We obtain a generalized Verlinde formula that gives these structure constants. In the context of theories with boundaries, we identify the space of vacuum torus amplitudes with the space of Ishibashi states. Then, we propose (3 p − 1) boundary states satisfying the Cardy condition.

Notes on the Verlinde formula in nonrational conformal field theories

Charles Jego, Jan Troost C

We review and extend evidence for the validity of a generalized Verlinde formula, in particular, nonrational conformal field theories. We identify a subset of representations of the chiral algebra in nonrational conformal field theories that give rise to an analogue of the relation between modular $S$-matrices and fusion coefficients in rational conformal field theories. To that end we review and extend the Cardy-type brane calculations in bosonic and supersymmetric Liouville theory (and its duals) as well as in ${H}_{3}^{+}$. We analyze the three-point functions of Liouville theory and of ${H}_{3}^{+}$ in detail to directly identify the fusion coefficients from the operator product expansion. Moreover, we check the validity of a proposed generic formula for localized brane one-point functions in nonrational conformal field theories.

Integrable boundary conditions and {\cal W} -extended fusion in the logarithmic minimal models {\cal LM}(1\hbox{,}\, p)

Paul A. Pearce, Jørgen Rasmussen, Philippe Ruelle

We consider the logarithmic minimal models LM(1,p) as `rational' logarithmic conformal field theories with extended W symmetry. To make contact with the extended picture starting from the lattice, we identify 4p-2 boundary conditions as specific limits of integrable boundary conditions of the underlying Yang-Baxter integrable lattice models. Specifically, we identify 2p integrable boundary conditions to match the 2p known irreducible W-representations. These 2p extended representations naturally decompose into infinite sums of the irreducible Virasoro representations (r,s). A further 2p-2 reducible yet indecomposable W-representations of rank 2 are generated by fusion and these decompose as infinite sums of indecomposable rank-2 Virasoro representations. The fusion rules in the extended picture are deduced from the known fusion rules for the Virasoro representations of LM(1,p) and are found to be in agreement with previous works. The closure of the fusion algebra on a finite number of representations in the extended picture is remarkable confirmation of the consistency of the lattice approach.

Bosonic rational conformal field theories in small genera, chiral fermionization, and symmetry/subalgebra duality

Brandon C. Rayhaun

A (1 + 1)D unitary bosonic rational conformal field theory (RCFT) may be organized according to its genus, a tuple (c,C) consisting of its central charge c and a unitary modular tensor category C which describes the (2 + 1)D topological quantum field theory for which its maximally extended chiral algebra forms a holomorphic boundary condition. We establish a number of results pertaining to RCFTs in “small” genera, by which we informally mean genera with the central charge c and the number of primary operators rank(C) both not too large. We start by completely solving the modular bootstrap problem for theories with at most four primary operators. In particular, we characterize, and provide an algorithm which efficiently computes, the function spaces to which the partition function of any bosonic RCFT with rank(C)≤4 must belong. Using this result, and leveraging relationships between RCFTs and holomorphic vertex operator algebras which come from “gluing” and cosets, we rigorously enumerate all bosonic theories in 95 of the 105 genera (c,C) with c ≤ 24 and rank(C)≤4. This includes as (new) special cases the classification of chiral algebras with three primaries and c < 120/7 ∼ 17.14, and the classification of chiral algebras with four primaries and c < 62/3 ∼ 20.67. We then study two applications of our classification. First, by making use of chiral versions of bosonization and fermionization, we obtain the complete list of purely left-moving fermionic RCFTs with c < 23 as a corollary of the results of the previous paragraph. Second, using a (conjectural) concept which we call “symmetry/subalgebra duality,” we precisely relate our bosonic classification to the problem of determining certain generalized global symmetries of holomorphic vertex operator algebras.
