Abstract

We review and extend evidence for the validity of a generalized Verlinde formula, in particular, nonrational conformal field theories. We identify a subset of representations of the chiral algebra in nonrational conformal field theories that give rise to an analogue of the relation between modular $S$-matrices and fusion coefficients in rational conformal field theories. To that end we review and extend the Cardy-type brane calculations in bosonic and supersymmetric Liouville theory (and its duals) as well as in ${H}_{3}^{+}$. We analyze the three-point functions of Liouville theory and of ${H}_{3}^{+}$ in detail to directly identify the fusion coefficients from the operator product expansion. Moreover, we check the validity of a proposed generic formula for localized brane one-point functions in nonrational conformal field theories.

The operator algebra of cyclic orbifolds

Benoit Estienne, Yacine Ikhlef, Andrei Rotaru

Abstract We identify the maximal chiral algebra of conformal cyclic orbifolds. In terms of this extended algebra, the orbifold is a rational and diagonal conformal field theory, provided the mother theory itself is also rational and diagonal. The operator content and operator product expansion of the cyclic orbifolds are revisited in terms of this algebra. The fusion rules and fusion numbers are computed via the Verlinde formula. This allows one to predict which conformal blocks appear in a given four-point function of twisted or untwisted operators, which is relevant for the computation of various entanglement measures in one-dimensional critical systems.

A non-rational Verlinde formula from Virasoro TQFT

Boris Post, Ioannis Tsiares

A bstract We use the Virasoro TQFT to derive an integral identity that we view as a non-rational generalization of the Verlinde formula for the Virasoro algebra with central charge c ≥ 25. The identity expresses the Virasoro fusion kernel as an integral over a ratio of modular S-kernels on the (punctured) torus. In particular, it shows that the one-point S-kernel diagonalizes the Virasoro 6 j symbol. After carefully studying the analytic properties of this ‘Virasoro-Verlinde formula’, we present three applications. In boundary Liouville CFT, the formula ensures the open-closed duality of the boundary one-point function on the annulus. In pure 3d gravity, it provides an essential step in computing the partition function on hyperbolic 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle. Lastly, in AdS 3 /CFT 2 , the formula computes a three-boundary torus wormhole, which leads to a prediction for the statistical correlation between the density of states and two OPE coefficients in the dual large- c CFT ensemble. We conclude by discussing the implications of our result for the fusion rules in generic non-rational 2d CFTs.

Fusion Algebras and Differential Equation Approach to Rational Conformal Field Theories

F. Ravanini

Constraints on conformal dimensions and central charge of Rational Conformal Field Theories (RCFTs) coming from analytic closure of 4-point functions on the sphere and modular invariance of partition function on the torus are reviewed. These constraints, together with modular invariance ones and a deeper understanding of the structure of Fusion Algebras (FAs) can help a lot in the classification of RCFTs. In particular we show how FAs with 2 and 3 primary operators can be completely classified.

The Cardy Formula from Goldstone Bosons

Edi Halyo

Two dimensional conformal field theories, can be described by their pseudo Goldstone bosons when the conformal symmetry is spontaneously and anomalously broken. We show that the Schwarzian action of these bosons leads to the Cardy formula without using modular invariance. As a result, the Cardy formula applies to conformal field theories on a cylinder and chiral theories in one dimension. This also explains why the Cardy--Verlinde formula for theories on $S^1 \times S^{d-2}$ can be written in the form of the Cardy formula of an effective two dimensional theory.

Conformal field theory on the plane

Sylvain Ribault

We review conformal field theory on the plane in the conformal bootstrap approach. We introduce the main ideas of the bootstrap approach to quantum field theory, and how they apply to two-dimensional theories with local conformal symmetry. We describe the mathematical structures that appear in such theories, from the Virasoro algebra and its representations, to BPZ equations and conformal blocks. Examples include Liouville theory, (generalized) minimal models, free bosonic theories, the $H_3^+$ model, and the $SU_2$ and $\widetilde{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ WZW models. We also discuss relations between some of these models, and limits of these models when the central charge and/or conformal dimensions tend to particular values.

Bosonic rational conformal field theories in small genera, chiral fermionization, and symmetry/subalgebra duality

Brandon C. Rayhaun

A (1 + 1)D unitary bosonic rational conformal field theory (RCFT) may be organized according to its genus, a tuple (c,C) consisting of its central charge c and a unitary modular tensor category C which describes the (2 + 1)D topological quantum field theory for which its maximally extended chiral algebra forms a holomorphic boundary condition. We establish a number of results pertaining to RCFTs in “small” genera, by which we informally mean genera with the central charge c and the number of primary operators rank(C) both not too large. We start by completely solving the modular bootstrap problem for theories with at most four primary operators. In particular, we characterize, and provide an algorithm which efficiently computes, the function spaces to which the partition function of any bosonic RCFT with rank(C)≤4 must belong. Using this result, and leveraging relationships between RCFTs and holomorphic vertex operator algebras which come from “gluing” and cosets, we rigorously enumerate all bosonic theories in 95 of the 105 genera (c,C) with c ≤ 24 and rank(C)≤4. This includes as (new) special cases the classification of chiral algebras with three primaries and c < 120/7 ∼ 17.14, and the classification of chiral algebras with four primaries and c < 62/3 ∼ 20.67. We then study two applications of our classification. First, by making use of chiral versions of bosonization and fermionization, we obtain the complete list of purely left-moving fermionic RCFTs with c < 23 as a corollary of the results of the previous paragraph. Second, using a (conjectural) concept which we call “symmetry/subalgebra duality,” we precisely relate our bosonic classification to the problem of determining certain generalized global symmetries of holomorphic vertex operator algebras.
