The operator algebra of cyclic orbifolds

Abstract

Abstract We identify the maximal chiral algebra of conformal cyclic orbifolds. In terms of this extended algebra, the orbifold is a rational and diagonal conformal field theory, provided the mother theory itself is also rational and diagonal. The operator content and operator product expansion of the cyclic orbifolds are revisited in terms of this algebra. The fusion rules and fusion numbers are computed via the Verlinde formula. This allows one to predict which conformal blocks appear in a given four-point function of twisted or untwisted operators, which is relevant for the computation of various entanglement measures in one-dimensional critical systems.

Notes on the Verlinde formula in nonrational conformal field theories

Charles Jego, Jan Troost C

We review and extend evidence for the validity of a generalized Verlinde formula, in particular, nonrational conformal field theories. We identify a subset of representations of the chiral algebra in nonrational conformal field theories that give rise to an analogue of the relation between modular $S$-matrices and fusion coefficients in rational conformal field theories. To that end we review and extend the Cardy-type brane calculations in bosonic and supersymmetric Liouville theory (and its duals) as well as in ${H}_{3}^{+}$. We analyze the three-point functions of Liouville theory and of ${H}_{3}^{+}$ in detail to directly identify the fusion coefficients from the operator product expansion. Moreover, we check the validity of a proposed generic formula for localized brane one-point functions in nonrational conformal field theories.

Topological sectors and a dichotomy in conformal field theory

Roberto Longo, Feng Xu

Let A be a local conformal net of factors on S 1 with the split property. We provide a topological construction of soliton representations of the n-fold tensor product A ⊗ · · · ⊗ A, that restrict to true representations of the cyclic orbifold (A ⊗ · · · ⊗ A) Zn. We prove a quantum index theorem for our sectors relating the Jones index to a topological degree. Then A is not completely rational iff the symmetrized tensor product (A ⊗ A) flip has an irreducible representation with infinite index. This implies the following dichotomy: if all irreducible sectors of A have a conjugate sector then either A is completely rational or A has uncountably many different irreducible sectors. Thus A is rational iff A is completely rational. In particular, if the µ-index of A is finite then A turns out to be strongly additive. By [30], if A is rational then the tensor category of representations of A is automatically modular, namely the braiding symmetry is non-degenerate. In interesting cases, we compute the fusion rules of the topological solitons and show that they determine all twisted sectors of the cyclic orbifold.

Operator fusion from wave-function overlap: Universal finite-size corrections and application to the Haagerup model

Yuhan Liu, Yijian Zou, Shinsei Ryu

Given a critical quantum spin chain described by a conformal field theory (CFT) at long distances, it is crucial to understand the universal conformal data. One most important ingredient is the operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients, which describe how operators fuse into each other. It has been proposed in [Zou and Vidal, Phys. Rev. B 105, 125125 (2022)] that the OPE coefficients can be computed from overlaps of low-energy wave functions of the spin chain. In this paper, we establish that all conformal data including central charge, conformal dimensions, and OPE coefficients are encoded in the wave-function overlaps, with universal finite-size corrections that depend on the operator content of the cyclic orbifold CFT. Thus this method allows us to numerically compute all the conformal data based solely on the low-energy eigenstates. The predictions are verified in the Ising and XXZ model. As an application, we study the recently proposed Haagerup model built from the Haagerup fusion category. We find that the CFT has central charge $c\ensuremath{\approx}2.1$ and the lowest spin-1 operator in the twisted sector has scaling dimension $1<{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{J}\ensuremath{\le}1.4$.

Bosonic rational conformal field theories in small genera, chiral fermionization, and symmetry/subalgebra duality

Brandon C. Rayhaun

A (1 + 1)D unitary bosonic rational conformal field theory (RCFT) may be organized according to its genus, a tuple (c,C) consisting of its central charge c and a unitary modular tensor category C which describes the (2 + 1)D topological quantum field theory for which its maximally extended chiral algebra forms a holomorphic boundary condition. We establish a number of results pertaining to RCFTs in “small” genera, by which we informally mean genera with the central charge c and the number of primary operators rank(C) both not too large. We start by completely solving the modular bootstrap problem for theories with at most four primary operators. In particular, we characterize, and provide an algorithm which efficiently computes, the function spaces to which the partition function of any bosonic RCFT with rank(C)≤4 must belong. Using this result, and leveraging relationships between RCFTs and holomorphic vertex operator algebras which come from “gluing” and cosets, we rigorously enumerate all bosonic theories in 95 of the 105 genera (c,C) with c ≤ 24 and rank(C)≤4. This includes as (new) special cases the classification of chiral algebras with three primaries and c < 120/7 ∼ 17.14, and the classification of chiral algebras with four primaries and c < 62/3 ∼ 20.67. We then study two applications of our classification. First, by making use of chiral versions of bosonization and fermionization, we obtain the complete list of purely left-moving fermionic RCFTs with c < 23 as a corollary of the results of the previous paragraph. Second, using a (conjectural) concept which we call “symmetry/subalgebra duality,” we precisely relate our bosonic classification to the problem of determining certain generalized global symmetries of holomorphic vertex operator algebras.

Conformal interfaces between free boson orbifold theories

Melanie Becker, Yaniel Cabrera, Daniel G. Robbins

We construct a large class of conformal interfaces between two-dimensional c = 1 conformal field theories describing compact free bosons and their $$ {\mathrm{\mathbb{Z}}}_2 $$ orbifolds. The interfaces are obtained by constructing boundary states in the corresponding c = 2 product theories and applying the unfolding procedure. We compute the fusion products for all of these defects, and identify the invertible topological interfaces associated to global symmetries, the interfaces corresponding to marginal deformations, and the interfaces which map the untwisted sector of an orbifold to the invariant states of the parent theory.

The many faces of Ocneanu cells

V. B. Petkova, Jean-Bernard Zuber

We define generalised chiral vertex operators covariant under the Ocneanu “double triangle algebra” A, a novel quantum symmetry intrinsic to a given rational 2-d conformal field theory. This provides a chiral approach, which, unlike the conventional one, makes explicit various algebraic structures encountered previously in the study of these theories and of the associated critical lattice models, and thus allows their unified treatment. The triangular Ocneanu cells, the 3j-symbols of the weak Hopf algebra A, reappear in several guises. With A and its dual algebra  one associates a pair of graphs, G and ˜G. While G are known to encode complete sets of conformal boundary states, the Ocneanu graphs ˜G classify twisted torus partition functions. The fusion algebra of the twist operators provides the data determining Â. The study of bulk field correlators in the presence of twists reveals that the Ocneanu graph quantum symmetry gives also an information on the field operator algebra.
