BOUNDARY STATES AND BROKEN BULK SYMMETRIES IN WAr MINIMAL MODELS

Abstract

We study the boundary states of (p', p) rational conformal field theories having a W symmetry of the type A(r) using the multi-component free-field formalism. The classification of primary fields for these models given in the literature is shown to be incomplete; we give the correct classification by demanding modular covariance and show that the resulting modular S matrix satisfies all the necessary conditions. Basis states satisfying the boundary conditions are found in the form of coherent states and as expected we find that W violating states can be found for all these models. We construct consistent physical boundary for all the rank 2 (p+1, p) models (of which the already known case of the 3-state Potts model is the simplest example) and find that the W violating sector possesses a direct analogue of the Verlinde formula.

Boundary States, Extended Symmetry Algebra and Module Structure for certain Rational Torus Models

Ioannis Smyrnakis

The massless bosonic field compactified on the circle of rational R 2 is reexamined in the presense of boundaries. A particular class of models corresponding to R 2 = 1 2k is distinguished by demanding the existence of a consistent set of Newmann boundary states. The boundary states are constructed explicitly for these models and the fusion rules are derived from them. These are the ones prescribed by the Verlinde formula from the S-matrix of the theory. In addition, the extended symmetry algebra of these theories is constructed which is responsible for the rationality of these theories. Finally, the chiral space of these models is shown to split into a direct sum of irreducible modules of the extended symmetry algebra. 1

From boundary to bulk in logarithmic CFT

Matthias R. Gaberdiel B, Ingo Runkel B

The analogue of the charge-conjugation modular invariant for rational logarithmic conformal field theories is constructed. This is done by reconstructing the bulk spectrum from a simple boundary condition (the analogue of the Cardy ‘identity brane’). We apply the general method to the c1,p triplet models and reproduce the previously known bulk theory for p = 2 at c = −2. For general p we verify that the resulting partition functions are modular invariant. We also construct the complete set of 2p boundary states, and confirm that the identity brane from which we started indeed exists. As a by-product we obtain a logarithmic version of the Verlinde formula for the c1,p triplet models.

Boundary conditions and anomalies of conformal field theories in 1 + 1 dimensions

Linhao Li, Chang-Tse Hsieh, Yuan Yao +1 more

We study a relationship between conformally invariant boundary conditions and anomalies of conformal field theories (CFTs) in $1+1$ dimensions. For a given CFT with a global symmetry, we consider symmetric ``gapping potentials'', which are relevant perturbations to the CFT. If a gapping potential is introduced only in a subregion of the system, it provides a certain boundary condition to the CFT. From this equivalence, if there exists a Cardy boundary state, which is invariant under a symmetry, then the CFT can be gapped with a unique ground state by adding the corresponding gapping potential. This means that the symmetry of the CFT is anomaly free. Using this approach, we systematically deduce the anomaly-free conditions for various types of CFTs with several different symmetries. They include the free compact boson theory, Wess-Zumino-Witten models, and unitary minimal models. When the symmetry of the CFT is anomalous, it implies a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type ingappability of the system. Our results are consistent with, where available, known results in the literature. Moreover, we extend the discussion to other symmetries including spin groups and generalized time-reversal symmetries.

Characterizing gapped phases by smeared boundary conformal field theories: Duality in unusual ordering with spontaneously broken generalized symmetries

Yoshiki Fukusumi, Shuma Nakashiba

We study the classification of the gapped phases or massive renormalization group (RG) flows dual to the massless RG flows under changing the sign of the coupling constants. Whereas our formalism is based on combining Higgs- or Nambu-Goldstone-type arguments with Cardy's smeared boundary conformal field theories (SBCFTs), several puzzling structures arise. More specifically, the established Higgs or Nambu-Goldstone type arguments on the duality imply that the natural basis for the gapped states should be constructed from a set of smeared Ishibashi states, which are unphysical in boundary critical phenomena. Hence, the module of the gapped phases can be outside of that of boundary critical phenomena, whereas one can still calculate characterizing quantities by applying SBCFTs to the models. For example, we demonstrate that the massive RG flow dual to the massless RG flow from the tricritical Ising model to the Ising model, one of the simplest massless RG flows, has this unusual structure. This can be regarded as a quantum field-theoretic analogue of order-disorder coexistence in lattice models. More generally, the resultant gapped phases usually spontaneously break non-group-like symmetry (or noninvertible symmetry). Our work provides systematic quantum field theoretic descriptions of such unusual phases with spontaneous symmetry breaking of non-group-like (or noninvertible) symmetries.

Modular transformation and boundary states in logarithmic conformal field theory

Kawai, S, JOHN F. WHEATER

We study the $c=-2$ model of logarithmic conformal field theory in the presence of a boundary using symplectic fermions. We find boundary states with consistent modular properties. A peculiar feature of this model is that the vacuum representation corresponding to the identity operator is a sub-representation of a ``reducible but indecomposable'' larger representation. This leads to unusual properties, such as the failure of the Verlinde formula. Despite such complexities in the structure of modules, our results suggest that logarithmic conformal field theories admit bona fide boundary states.
