Long distance phase-coherent link between near- and mid-infrared frequency reference

Bérengère Argence, Bruno Chanteau, Olivier Lopez +8 more

We present a new method for accurate mid-infrared frequency measurements and stabilization to a near-infrared ultra-stable frequency reference, transmitted with a long-distance fibre link and continuously monitored against state-of-the- art atomic fountain clocks. We demonstrate the frequency stabilization of a mid-infrared laser with fractional stability better than 4x10(-1)4 at 1 s averaging. This new stabilization scheme gives us the ability to transfer frequency stability in the range of 10(-1)5 or even better, currently accessible in the near-infrared or in the visible, to mid-infrared lasers in a wide frequency range.

Laser frequency stabilization to excited state transitions using electromagnetically induced transparency in a cascade system

R. P. Abel, Ashok Kumar Mohapatra, Mark G. Bason +4 more

We demonstrate laser frequency stabilization to excited state transitions using cascade electromagnetically induced transparency. Using a room temperature Rb vapor cell as a reference, we stabilize a first diode laser to the D2 transition and a second laser to a transition from the intermediate 5P3/2 state to a highly excited state with principal quantum number n=19–70. A combined laser linewidth of 280±50 kHz over a 100 μs time period is achieved. This method may be applied generally to any cascade system and allows laser stabilization to an atomic reference in the absence of a direct absorption signal.

Direct Kerr-frequency-comb atomic stabilization

Liron Stern, Jordan R. Stone, Songbai Kang +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate direct Kerr-microresonator frequency-comb atomic spectroscopy, utilizing a cascaded two-photon 1529-nm transition in a rubidium micro-machined vapor cell. The demonstration is a path for compact atomic frequency references and multiphoton comb-atom interactions.

We measured direct influence of a mid-infrared laser at 5.23 µm on the 5D5/2-6P3/2 transition of rubidium (85Rb) pumped by two photons at 780 nm and 776 nm. The hyperfine structure of the 6P3/2 level is clearly identified.

In this work we demonstrate the use of a stabilized Mid-infrared quantum cascade laser as a local oscillator for ultra-sensitive Mid-IR heterodyne detection. We show a measurement of 80dB signal to noise ratio GHz heterodyne signal measured with a resolution bandwidth of 1 Hz using ultrafast quantum well infrared photodetector.
