Quantum tunneling effect on switching rates of bistable driven system

N. S. Maslova, Evgeny V. Anikin, Vladimir N. Mantsevich +2 more

Abstract The influence of quantum tunneling effects on the bistability of nonlinear resonantly driven oscillators in the presence of external noise is analyzed by means of the generalized Fokker–Planck equation in quasi-energy space. Two time scales responsible for different stages of bistable system relaxation have been revealed. It was found that quantum tunneling effects could strongly change the switching rates between different stable states and considerably enhance occupation of the stable state with higher amplitude. It was also revealed that tunneling between nearly degenerate quasi-energy states and resonant multi-photon transitions between the genuine eigenstates of the nonlinear oscillator are just similar effects.

Inter-Condensate Tunneling in Bose-Einstein Condensates with Feshbach Resonances

Eddy Timmermans, Paolo Tommasini, Robin Côté +2 more

Recently, effects of Feshbach resonances in atom-atom interactions were observed by varying the external magnetic field of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We point out that the quasi-bound molecules created in the intermediate state of the resonance can form a second, molecular condensate. The many-body state of the system is then a hybrid atomic/molecular condensate with inter-condensate tunneling of atom pairs. A sudden variation of the magnetic field results in oscillations of the number of atoms and molecules in their respective condensates, providing a signature of this novel type of quantum tunneling.

Quantum tunneling of magnetization in dipolar spin-1 condensates under external fields

Limin Yang, Yunbo Zhang

We study the macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetization of the $F=1$ spinor condensate interacting through dipole-dipole interaction with an external magnetic field applied along the longitudinal or transverse direction. We show that the ground state energy and the effective magnetic moment of the system exhibit an interesting macroscopic quantum oscillation phenomenon originating from the oscillating dependence of thermodynamic properties of the system on the vacuum angle. Tunneling between two degenerate minima are analyzed by means of an effective potential method and the periodic instanton method.
