Abstract

We investigated theoretically the time dependence of ultra-short laser pulse scattering by an atom at the high-frequency limit for the spectral and total probability of the process using new expression which we derived in this paper. We established that the time dependence of spectral scattering is presented by the curve with the maximum for sufficiently large detuning of scattering frequency from the carrier frequency of the pulse, while the total scattering probability is always the monotonically increasing function of time. We also studied the dependence of scattering probability on pulse duration at the long-time limit. It was shown that, at the long-pulse limit, the scattering probability is a linear function of pulse duration, while in the opposite case, it is a function with maximum. The position of this maximum is determined by the detuning of the scattering frequency from the carrier frequency of the pulse.

Resonant Scattering of Picosecond Laser Pulses by Atoms in Alkali Metal Vapors

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, N. N. Moroz

Resonant scattering of ultrashort laser pulses (ULPs) in the vicinity of spectral doublets in monatomic lithium and sodium vapors is studied theoretically. The scattering probability over the entire time of pulse action is calculated as a function of various parameters of the problem (carrier frequency and ULP duration, as well as vapor pressure and temperature). It is shown that the dependence of the total scattering probability on the pulse duration is generally nonlinear by nature.

Non-linear excitation of atoms by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, Sergey V. Sakhno

The development of methods of generation of ultrashort pulses (USP) of femto- and attosecond duration ranges with controlled parameters necessitates the theoretical study of features of their interaction with a matter [1]. Among such features that do not exist in case of “long” pulses should first of all be the nonlinear dependence of the photoprocess probability W on the USP duration (τ) [2] as well as the dependence on the carrier phase with respect to the pulse envelope (φ) [3-4]. It should be noted that if the dependence of the probability W on the phase φ manifests itself either only for very short pulses, when ωτ < 1 (ω is carrier frequency of the pulse), or in case of a nonlinear photoprocess [3], the function W(τ) can differ from a linear function in the limit ωτ> 1 too for fields of moderate strength, when the perturbation theory is applicable [2].

Time distribution of stimulated transition probabilities

Pedro Pereyra

Abstract In recent years, an increasing number of experimental results have been published for a wide variety of systems in which high-precision, ultra-fast, and ultra-short laser pulses techniques have been used to study time-resolved dynamical processes. In the absence of a theoretical prediction of the time distribution of the transition probabilities, the lifetimes τ are generally extracted by fitting the decay time with an exponential, bi-exponential or three-exponential function. In fitting the data, the short-time behavior is generally neglected. The purpose of this study is to show that an explicit formula for the time distribution of the transition probability can be determined rigorously using time-dependent perturbation theory. A formula that perfectly fits an important subset of the experimental results from t = 0 to t = ∞ . We show that by following a route different from the usual procedure for deriving transition amplitudes and Einstein coefficients in time-dependent perturbation theory, one ends up with a time-dependent factor, that is, a temporal distribution function of the transition probabilities, and for the Einstein coefficients. The time distribution reported here looks in the time domain similar to the Planck distribution in the frequency domain. In fact, the behavior of the time distribution, with a maximum at 2 τ ln ⁡ 2 , and with τ playing the role of temperature, resembles the behavior of the Planck frequency distribution. We present several examples to demonstrate that the theoretical formula allows for easier fitting of the experimental results reported in the literature. We also show that the time distribution explains the difference in resonance heights between the experimental and theoretical blue laser spectra.

Attosecond Dynamics of Photoexcitation of the Hydrogen Atom by Ultrashort Laser Pulses

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

Abstract The dynamics of photoexcitation of the hydrogen atom in the discrete and continuous spectra under the action of laser pulses in the attosecond range of time and pulse durations has been analyzed using perturbation theory. It is shown that over time interval shorter than or on the order of pulse duration, the time dependence of the photoexcitation probability is generally oscillating by nature. It has been established that for certain values of parameters, the envelope of this dependence has a peak, the position of which is determined by the pulse duration and carrier frequency.

Absorption of Ultrashort Laser Pulses in an Optically Dense Medium

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

Abstract In the framework of the consistent microscopic theory, universal analytic expressions describing absorption of laser pulses of an arbitrary duration in an optically dense medium have been derived, and their limiting cases have been considered. For the Gaussian and Lorentzian spectral profiles, simple expressions have been obtained for the absorption coefficient as a function of dimensionless parameters (optical thickness of the medium, the pulse duration and carrier frequency). Based on the performed calculations, the effect of the optical thickness of the medium on the dependences of the absorption coefficient on the pulse parameters has been revealed.

Interaction of Ultrashort Laser Pulses with Atoms in Plasmas

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, Valerii S. Lisitsa

The paper is devoted to the investigation of the absorption of ultrashort laser pulses on atoms in plasmas, accounting for the different broadening mechanisms of atomic resonant transitions. The analysis is made in terms of the absorption probability during the entire interaction between the laser pulse and atom. Attention is mainly given to dependence of probability upon the pulse duration and the carrier frequency of the pulse. The results are presented via dimensionless parameters and functions describing the effect of finite pulse duration on atomic spectra for different broadening mechanisms, namely Doppler, Voigt, Holtsmark and their combinations, as well as the Stark line broadening of Rydberg atomic lines.
