Attosecond Dynamics of Photoexcitation of the Hydrogen Atom by Ultrashort Laser Pulses

Abstract

Abstract The dynamics of photoexcitation of the hydrogen atom in the discrete and continuous spectra under the action of laser pulses in the attosecond range of time and pulse durations has been analyzed using perturbation theory. It is shown that over time interval shorter than or on the order of pulse duration, the time dependence of the photoexcitation probability is generally oscillating by nature. It has been established that for certain values of parameters, the envelope of this dependence has a peak, the position of which is determined by the pulse duration and carrier frequency.

Two-photon Excitation of Hydrogen Atom by Sub-Femtoseconds Electromagnetic Pulses

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, S. V. Sakhno

The development of methods of generation of ultrashort pulses (USP) of femto- and attosecond duration ranges with controlled parameters necessitates the theoretical study of features of their interaction with a matter. Among such features that do not exist in case of “long” pulses should first of all be the nonlinear dependence of the photoprocess probability W on the USP duration as well as the dependence on the carrier phase with respect to the pulse envelope. It should be noted that if the dependence of the probability W on the phase manifests itself either only for very short pulses, when ωt 1 too for fields of moderate strength, when the perturbation theory is applicable. The present work is dedicated to the theoretical analysis of two-photon excitation of hydrogen atom in a discrete energy spectrum by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses of femto- and subfemtosecond ranges of durations. As examples, excitation of hydrogen atom from the ground state to excited states with a zero orbital moment is considered.

Interaction of Ultrashort Laser Pulses with Atoms in Plasmas

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, Valerii S. Lisitsa

The paper is devoted to the investigation of the absorption of ultrashort laser pulses on atoms in plasmas, accounting for the different broadening mechanisms of atomic resonant transitions. The analysis is made in terms of the absorption probability during the entire interaction between the laser pulse and atom. Attention is mainly given to dependence of probability upon the pulse duration and the carrier frequency of the pulse. The results are presented via dimensionless parameters and functions describing the effect of finite pulse duration on atomic spectra for different broadening mechanisms, namely Doppler, Voigt, Holtsmark and their combinations, as well as the Stark line broadening of Rydberg atomic lines.

Selective excitation of metastable atomic states by femto- and attosecond laser pulses

Alexey D. Kondorskiy, Леонид Петрович Пресняков, Yuri V. Ralchenko

The possibility of achieving highly selective excitation of low metastable states of hydrogen and helium atoms by using short laser pulses with reasonable parameters is demonstrated theoretically. Interactions of atoms with the laser field are studied by solving the close-coupling equations without discretization. The parameters of laser pulses are calculated using different kinds of optimization procedures. For the excitation durations of hundreds of femtoseconds direct optimization of the parameters of one and two laser pulses with Gaussian envelopes is used to introduce a number of simple schemes of selective excitation. To treat the case of shorter excitation durations, optimal control theory is used and the calculated optimal fields are approximated by sequences of pulses with reasonable shapes. A way to achieve selective excitation of metastable atomic states by using sequences of attosecond pulses is introduced.

Ionization of Atoms by Attosecond Pulses

A. V. Gets, В. П. Крайнов

Abstract Ionization of atoms by ultrashort one‐cycle electromagnetic pulses is considered. First‐order time‐dependent perturbation theory for derivation of ionization probability by pulses with various field profiles is used. Numerical calculations for hydrogen and xenon atoms are done. Strong field‐phase dependence of ionization probability is shown. (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Influence of ultrashort pulses on resonantly driven systems

ZiJian Long, Wing‐Ki Liu

The influence of ultrashort low-frequency laser pulses of different intensities and pulse lengths on the dynamics of a resonantly driven atomic system is investigated theoretically. We demonstrate the periodical dependence of the total ionization rate on the appearance time of a strong few-cycle laser pulse. By depleting the excited state, the intense short pulse not only resets the Rabi oscillations, but also introduces a time shift that is proportional to the pulse length. This time shift can be employed to determine the ultrashort pulse length. In the case of ultrashort pulses with lower intensities, we observe side-bands in the two-photon ionization spectrum, whose intensities vary periodically with the appearance time of the pulse. This can be utilized to measure the period of Rabi oscillations. We have developed an S-matrix theory of two-colour ionization which can explain some of the observations of our numerical calculations. Furthermore, we have studied the high harmonic generation spectra as well as the attosecond pulses generated from the high harmonics. We show that the Rabi oscillation can be used to alter the ionization rate within laser sub-cycles and therefore select different quantum trajectories in the high harmonics generation.

Two-photon excitation of atoms by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in a discrete spectrum

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, S. V. Sakhno

The paper is devoted to the theoretical investigation of two-photon excitation of atom in a discrete energy spectrum by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses of femto- and subfemtosecond ranges of durations. An analytical expression for the total probability of the process is derived. Numerical simulations are made for hydrogen and sodium atoms. It is shown that the total probability of the process is nonlinear function of pulse duration and character of this function depends strongly on the frequency detuning of pulse carrier frequency from two-photon resonance.
