Abstract

We present a study of spontaneously arisen spatially entangled photon pairs via intermodal four-wave mixing in a graded-index multimode optical fiber. Unique dispersive features of the fiber allow spectral indistinguishability of two different phase-matched processes, producing entangled pairs of spatial qubits. The bases are realized as superpositions of orthogonal transverse fiber modes having opposite parities. In particular, we take into consideration the spectral properties of the processes by examining their joint spectral amplitudes. It is shown that illuminating graded-index optical fiber with different pump wavelengths has an impact upon efficiency parameters accordingly the degree of spatial entanglement and gives rise to photon pairs with various spectral purities. Photons with higher spectral purity enable desired single-photon based interactions to take place, whereas photons with lower spectral purity exhibit hybrid entanglement in frequency and transverse mode. We also discuss Wigner function formalism and parity-displacement-based realization to characterize spatial properties of the states, as well as to verify quantum entanglement through a violation of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality.

Towards generation of hybrid entangled photon pairs by spectrally overlapping intermodal-vectorial four-wave mixing bands in optical fibers

Andrzej Gawlik, Marta Bernaś, Kinga Żołnacz +1 more

Optical fiber-based sources of photon pairs with hybrid entanglement across multiple degrees of freedom are essential for a wide range of quantum technologies, while remaining compatible with existing communication networks. In this paper, we use a birefringent few-mode fiber to demonstrate an intermodal-vectorial four-wave mixing process that generates two pairs of spectrally overlapping signal-idler bands. Using phase-matching conditions, we show that the pairs of bands become spectrally indistinguishable when the group refractive indices of the signal and idler modes intersect at the pump wavelength. Our theoretical predictions are confirmed through experimental observations and corroborated by numerical simulations. Furthermore, we introduce the two-photon state associated with the overlapping bands, which simultaneously exhibits entanglement in a single degree of freedom and hybrid entanglement across multiple degrees of freedom. We also explain how the type and degree of entanglement can be controlled by tailoring the spectral overlap between the signal-idler bands. This study presents a promising scheme for a fiber-based source of photon pairs with entanglement spanning the spatial, polarization, and frequency degrees of freedom.

Entangled photon pair generation via spontaneous intermodal four-wave mixing in a 25km few-mode fiber

Seyedehnajmeh Montazeri, Mina Esmaeelpour

High degrees of security have been achieved in quantum communication over fiber using entangled photons. For communications applications, it is crucial to produce high-yield entangled photon pairs (EPPs) with the capacity to transmit them over telecommunication-length fiber distances and the ability to integrate and transmit them over existing classical communication systems. Since spatial division multiplexing (SDM) is currently being demonstrated to replace single-mode communication systems, it only makes sense to demonstrate the generation and transferring EPPs in various fiber modes suitable for generation and transmission in SDM fibers. We experimentally demonstrate EPP formation in a 25-km-long graded-index few-mode fiber (three modes) via the intermodal spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) effect. Mode profile and phase matching condition have been confirmed through experiments.

Spectrally indistinguishable intermodal-vectorial four-wave-mixing in birefringent few-mode fibers for spatial-polarization-frequency hybrid-entangled photon-pairs generation

This study introduces a scheme for a fiber-based source of photon pairs with spatial-polarization-frequency entanglement.

Generating transverse-mode entanglement in optical fiber

Dong Beom Kim, Alfred B. U’Ren, Karina Garay-Palmett +1 more

We report our recent progress in the generation and verification of a transverse-mode Bell state using spontaneous four-wave mixing in a few-mode polarization-maintaining fiber. Utilizing spatial light modulators, we show control over individual four-wave mixing processes through precise beam shaping of the pump transverse mode and verify entanglement via quantum state tomography. We discuss challenges in temporal and frequency distinguishability and illustrate how they can be resolved. This work represents a first step towards creating a versatile fiber-based transverse mode-entangled photon-pair source matched to fiber infrastructure.

Optical fiber polarization-entangled photon pair source using intermodal spontaneous four-wave mixing in the visible spectral band

K Lee, Jae‐Sun Jung, J H Lee

Abstract The theoretical and experimental investigation results of the generation of the polarization-entangled photon pairs operating at visible wavelengths are reported. The generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs was based on intermodal spontaneous four-wave mixing (IM-SFWM) using standard step-index few-mode fiber. It was shown theoretically that several combinations of IM-SFWM processes could occur depending on spatial modes of a pump beam. A polarization-entangled photon pair source based on Sagnac loop incorporating a segment of few-mode fiber were then experimentally created. A two-photon interference fringe visibility of our implemented photon pair source were 91.7% and 88.8% in H/V bases and D/A bases, respectively. A quantum state tomography was also conducted to reconstruct the density matrix of the generated state with a fidelity to a maximum entangled state of 93.1%.

Photon pair generation with tailored frequency correlations in graded-index multimode fibers

Hamed Pourbeyram, Arash Mafi

We study theoretically the generation of photon pairs with controlled spectral correlations via the four-wave mixing process in graded-index multimode optical fibers (GIMFs). We show that the quantum correlations of the generated photons in GIMFs can be preserved over a wide spectral range for a tunable pump source. Therefore, GIMFs can be utilized as quantum-state-preserving tunable sources of photons. In particular, we have shown that it is possible to generate factorable two-photon states, which allow for heralding of pure-state single photons without the need for narrowband spectral post filtering. We also elaborate on the possibility of simultaneously generating correlated and uncorrelated photon pairs in the same optical fiber.
