Abstract

We study theoretically the generation of photon pairs with controlled spectral correlations via the four-wave mixing process in graded-index multimode optical fibers (GIMFs). We show that the quantum correlations of the generated photons in GIMFs can be preserved over a wide spectral range for a tunable pump source. Therefore, GIMFs can be utilized as quantum-state-preserving tunable sources of photons. In particular, we have shown that it is possible to generate factorable two-photon states, which allow for heralding of pure-state single photons without the need for narrowband spectral post filtering. We also elaborate on the possibility of simultaneously generating correlated and uncorrelated photon pairs in the same optical fiber.

State-engineered photon pair generation in graded-index multimode optical fibers (Conference Presentation)

We investigate by theory ultra broadband photon pair generation in graded index multimode optical fibers (GIMFs). It has been shown how the unique dispersive properties of GIMFs provide an opportunity to generate state engineered photon pairs. Our findings hint on interesting features such as: - GIMFs provide can be used as an ultra tunable source of state engineered photon pairs. - Quantum correlations are independent of fiber mode and group number and only depend on spectral separation from the pump. - It is possible to simultaneously generate uncorrelated and correlated photon pair in the same fiber.

Photon pair-state preparation with tailored spectral properties by spontaneous four-wave mixing in photonic-crystal fiber

Karina Garay-Palmett, Hayden McGuinness, Offir Cohen +7 more

We study theoretically the generation of photon pairs by spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in photonic crystal optical fiber. We show that it is possible to engineer two-photon states with specific spectral correlation ("entanglement") properties suitable for quantum information processing applications. We focus on the case exhibiting no spectral correlations in the two-photon component of the state, which we call factorability, and which allows heralding of single-photon pure-state wave packets without the need for spectral post filtering. We show that spontaneous four wave mixing exhibits a remarkable flexibility, permitting a wider class of two-photon states, including ultra-broadband, highly-anticorrelated states.

Generation of photon pairs with tailored spectral properties by spontaneous four-wave mixing

We present a theoretical study of the generation of photon pairs by spontaneous four‐wave mixing (SFWM) in photonic crystal optical fiber. We show that it is possible to engineer two‐photon states with specific spectral entanglement properties suitable for quantum information processing applications. In this work, we concentrate on states exhibiting no spectral correlations in the two‐photon component of the state, which allow heralding of pure‐state, single‐photon wavepackets without the need for spectral post filtering. We present specific source designs which permit both symmetric and asymmetric factorable states, with signal and idler photons in the visible, and sufficiently removed from the pump to ensure suppression of background photons produced by spontaneous Raman scattering.

Tailored Photon-Pair Generation in Optical Fibers

We experimentally control the spectral structure of photon pairs created via spontaneous four-wave mixing in microstructured fibers. By fabricating fibers with designed dispersion, one can manipulate the photons' wavelengths, joint spectrum, and, thus, entanglement. As an example, we produce photon pairs with no spectral correlations, allowing direct heralding of single photons in pure-state wave packets without filtering. We achieve an experimental purity of (85.9+/-1.6)%, while theoretical analysis and preliminary tests suggest that 94.5% purity is possible with a much longer fiber.

State engineering of photon pairs produced through dual-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing

Bin Fang, Offir Cohen, Jamy B. Moreno +1 more

We study theoretically the joint spectral properties of photon-pairs produced through spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) with two spectrally distinct pump pulses in optical fibers. We show that, due to the group velocity difference between the pulses, the signature of the interaction can be significantly different from spontaneous parametric down-conversion or SFWM with a single pump pulse. Specifically, we study the case where temporal walk-off between the pumps enables a gradual turn-on and turn-off of the interaction. By utilizing this property, we develop a new approach towards tailoring the spectral correlations within the generated photon pairs, demonstrating the ability to produce factorable photon-pair states, and hence heralded single photons in a pure wave-packet. We show that the use of two pumps is advantageous over single-pump SFWM approaches towards this goal: the usage of the dual-pump configuration enables, in principle, the creation of completely factorable states without any spectral filtering, even in media for which single-pump SFWM tailoring techniques are unsatisfactory, such as standard polarization-maintaining fiber.
