Abstract

Synopsis Interference effects resulting from direct single-photon and resonant two-photon ionization of neon and argon by bichromatic circularly polarized radiation were investigated in the framework of the perturbation theory. Analytical formulas are obtained for the differential cross section of the process in multielectron noble gas atoms. The possibility of coherent control of the photoelectron angular distribution and spin polarization will be discussed.

Photoelectron angular distributions in bichromatic atomic ionization induced by circularly polarized VUV femtosecond pulses

Nicolas Douguet, Alexei N. Grum-Grzhimailo, Грызлова Елена Владимировна +3 more

We investigate two-pathway interferences between nonresonant one-photon and resonant two-photon ionization of atomic hydrogen. In particular, we analyze in detail the photoionization mediated by the fundamental frequency and the second harmonic of a femtosecond VUV pulse when the fundamental is tuned near an intermediate atomic state. Following our recent study [Phys. Rev. A 91, 063418 (2015)] of such effects with linearly polarized light, we analyze a similar situation with circularly polarized radiation. As a consequence of the richer structure in circularly polarized light, characterized by its right-handed or left-handed helicity, we present and discuss various important features associated with the photoelectron angular distribution.

Interference between one-photon and resonant two-photon ionization by intense pulses of a bichromatic VUV field

Alexei N. Grum-Grzhimailo, Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Ekaterina I. Staroselskaya +2 more

Photoelectron angular distributions are theoretically described for coherent atomic ionization by short intense pulses of VUV radiation, containing both first and second harmonics, when the energy of the fundamental is in resonance with an intermediate state. The interference between different ionization pathways results in a 'left-right' asymmetry, which exhibits resonance profiles as function of the photon energy.

Polarization phenomena in multiphoton ionization of atoms

V. L. Jacobs

The theory of multiphoton ionization for an atomic system of arbitrary complexity is developed using a density matrix formalism. An expression is obtained which determines the differential N-photon ionization cross section as a function of the polarization states of the target atom and the incident radiation. The parameters which characterize the photo-electron angular distribution are related to the general reduced matrix elements for the N-photon transition. Two-photon ionization of unpolarized atoms is treated as an illustration of the use of the theory. The dependence of the multiphoton ionization cross section on the polarization state of the incident radiation, which has been observed in two- and three-photon ionization of Cs, is accounted for by the theory. Finally, the photoelectron spin polarization produced by the multiphoton ionization of unpolarized atoms, like the analogous polarization resulting from single-photon ionization, is found to depend on the circular polarization of the incident radiation.

Attosecond polarization control in atomic RABBITT-like experiments assisted by a circularly polarized laser

Diego I. R. Boll, O A Fojón

Abstract We study theoretically the single ionization of noble gas atoms by the combined action of an attosecond pulse train with linear polarization and an assistant laser field with circular polarization. We employ a non-perturbative model that under certain approximations gives closed-form expressions for the angular distributions of photoelectrons. Interestingly, our model allow us to interpret these angular distributions as two-centre interferences where the orientation and the modulus of the separation vector between the virtual emitters is governed by the assistant laser field. Additionally, we show that such a configuration of light fields is similar to the polarization control technique, where both the attosecond pulse train and the assistant laser field have linear polarizations whose relative orientation may be controlled. Moreover, in order to compare our results with the available experimental data, we obtain analytical expressions for the cross sections integrated over the photoelectron emission angles. By means of these expressions, we define the ‘magic time’ as the delay for which the total cross sections for atomic targets exhibit the same functional form as the one of the monochromatic photoionization of diatomic molecular targets.

Quantum coherent control of the photoelectron angular distribution in bichromatic-field ionization of atomic neon

Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Alexei N. Grum-Grzhimailo, Ekaterina I. Staroselskaya +2 more

We investigate the coherent control of the photoelectron angular distribution in bichromatic atomic ionization. Neon is selected as target since it is one of the most popular systems in current gas-phase experiments with free-electron lasers (FELSs). In particular, we tackle practical questions, such as the role of the fine-structure splitting, the pulse length, and the intensity. Time-dependent and stationary perturbation theory are employed, and we also solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation in a single-active electron model. We consider neon ionized by a FEL pulse whose fundamental frequency is in resonance with either $2p\text{\ensuremath{-}}3s$ or $2p\text{\ensuremath{-}}4s$ excitation. The contribution of the nonresonant two-photon process and its potential constructive or destructive role for quantum coherent control is investigated.

Coherent control of the photoelectron angular distribution in ionization of neon by a circularly polarized bichromatic field in the resonance region

Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Maria M. Popova, Alexei N. Grum-Grzhimailo +3 more

Coherent control of the photoelectron angular distribution (PAD) in ionization by a bichromatic circularly polarized field is theoretically studied in neon in the photon energy range 16--20 eV. The breakdown of the PAD axial symmetry with respect to the light propagation direction is analyzed. The coherent control of the PAD manifests itself through: (1) a change from a one-lobe to a three-lobe shape, respectively, for co- and counter-rotating harmonics, (2) a variation of the polar asymmetry with the light frequency, and (3) a rotation of the PAD around the direction of the beam depending on the relative phase between the harmonics. Tuning the lowest harmonic at the $2{p}^{5}3s$ or $2{p}^{5}4s$ intermediate excited states strongly influences the PAD. In contrast to atomic hydrogen and the alkali atoms, the cases of equal and opposite helicity are not related in neon. Features of a conjugate polarization setup, when one harmonic is linearly polarized while the other one is circularly polarized, are also discussed.
