Abstract

We investigate two-pathway interferences between nonresonant one-photon and resonant two-photon ionization of atomic hydrogen. In particular, we analyze in detail the photoionization mediated by the fundamental frequency and the second harmonic of a femtosecond VUV pulse when the fundamental is tuned near an intermediate atomic state. Following our recent study [Phys. Rev. A 91, 063418 (2015)] of such effects with linearly polarized light, we analyze a similar situation with circularly polarized radiation. As a consequence of the richer structure in circularly polarized light, characterized by its right-handed or left-handed helicity, we present and discuss various important features associated with the photoelectron angular distribution.

Interference between one-photon and resonant two-photon ionization by intense pulses of a bichromatic VUV field

Alexei N. Grum-Grzhimailo, Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Ekaterina I. Staroselskaya +2 more

Photoelectron angular distributions are theoretically described for coherent atomic ionization by short intense pulses of VUV radiation, containing both first and second harmonics, when the energy of the fundamental is in resonance with an intermediate state. The interference between different ionization pathways results in a 'left-right' asymmetry, which exhibits resonance profiles as function of the photon energy.

Interfering one-photon and two-photon ionization by femtosecond VUV pulses in the region of an intermediate resonance

Alexei N. Grum-Grzhimailo, Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Ekaterina I. Staroselskaya +2 more

The electron angular distribution after atomic photoionization by the fundamental frequency and its second harmonic is analyzed for a case when the frequency of the fundamental scans the region of an intermediate atomic state. The angular distribution and its left-right asymmetry, due to the two-pathway interference between nonresonant one-photon and resonant two-photon ionization, sharply change as a function of the photon energy. The phenomenon is exemplified by both solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation on a numerical space-time grid and by applying perturbation theory for ionization of the hydrogen atom in the region of the $1s\text{\ensuremath{-}}2p$ transition for femtosecond pulses as well as an infinitely long exposure to the radiation. Parametrizations for the asymmetry and the anisotropy coefficients, obtained within perturbation theory, reveal general characteristics of observable quantities as functions of the parameters of the radiation beam.

Polarization phenomena in bichromatic ionization of Ne and Ar induced by circularly polarized VUV femtosecond pulses

A N Grum-Grzhimailo, Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Maria M. Popova

Synopsis Interference effects resulting from direct single-photon and resonant two-photon ionization of neon and argon by bichromatic circularly polarized radiation were investigated in the framework of the perturbation theory. Analytical formulas are obtained for the differential cross section of the process in multielectron noble gas atoms. The possibility of coherent control of the photoelectron angular distribution and spin polarization will be discussed.

Circular dichroism in the two-colour two-photon ionization of hydrogen

Aurelia Cionga, Magda Fifirig, F. Ehlotzky

We study dichroic effects in the two-photon ionization of hydrogen from its ground state due to the interaction with a bichromatic field of commensurate frequencies. The two field components have different polarization: one is linearly polarized and the other is circularly polarized (CP). Circular dichroism (CD) in the angular distribution of the photoelectrons appears if the helicity of the CP field is reversed. Numerical results reveal the influence of the photon frequencies chosen on the CD in the azimuthal angular distribution of the ejected photoelectrons.

Circular dichroism in atomic resonance-enhanced few-photon ionization

A. H. N. C. De Silva, T. Moon, K. L. Romans +8 more

We investigate few-photon ionization of lithium atoms prepared in the polarized $2p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}({m}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}=+1)$ state when subjected to femtosecond light pulses with left- or right-handed circular polarization at wavelengths between 665 and 920 nm. We consider whether ionization proceeds more favorably for the electric field co- or counter-rotating with the initial electronic current density. Strong asymmetries are found and quantitatively analyzed in terms of ``circular dichroism'' (CD). While the intensity dependence of the measured CD values is rather weak throughout the investigated regime, a very strong sensitivity on the center wavelength of the incoming radiation is observed. While the co-rotating situation overall prevails, the counter-rotating geometry is strongly favored around 800 nm due to the $2p\text{\ensuremath{-}}3s$ resonant transition, which can only be driven by counter-rotating fields. The observed features provide insights into the helicity dependence of light-atom interactions, and on the possible control of electron emission in atomic few-photon ionization by polarization-selective resonance enhancement.
