Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we study the dynamics of ultracold 87Rb under the influence of tilted optical lattice via Bloch oscillation in the single-band regime. By simulating the intraband dynamics of wavepacket in position and momentum spaces, the dependences of amplitude and period of the oscillation on tilted coefficient and lattice height are shown and compared with classical theory under tight-binding approximation. We also verify the limit of the single-band approximation where the Landau-Zener transition is neglected.

Bloch oscillations and Zener breakdown in an optical lattice

Martin Holthaus

We study the dynamics of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice under constant bias. After recapitulating the ideas underlying Bloch oscillations and Zener's formula for interband transitions, the Bloch-Zener scenario is tested by means of accurate numerical solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. It is shown how two shortcomings of the traditional Zener formula can be removed: the common weak-binding approximation can be circumvented by combining Kohn's insight into the structure of complex energy bands with the Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas description of transitions in terms of adiabatic excursions on analytically continued eigenvalue surfaces, and a usually neglected Stokes phenomenon comes into play when accounting for the finite width of the Brillouin zone. Treating Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices within the standard mean-field approximation at zero temperature, the ideal Bloch-Zener scenario turns out to be remarkably stable against the condensate's nonlinear self-interaction. Yet, under appropriate conditions a Bloch-oscillating Gross-Pitaevskii wavepacket reveals characteristic signatures of that nonlinearity, such as sudden phase jumps, slight shifts of the oscillation frequency or non-classical breathing modes. It is suggested that such experimentally detectable signatures will play an important role in future high-precision experiments aiming at the exploration of many-body dynamics in periodic potentials with condensates in optical lattices.

Observation and Uses of Position-Space Bloch Oscillations in an Ultracold Gas

Zachary A. Geiger, Kurt Fujiwara, Kevin Singh +8 more

We report the observation and characterization of position-space Bloch oscillations using cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice. While momentum-space Bloch oscillations are a common feature of optical lattice experiments, the real-space center-of-mass dynamics are typically unresolvable. In a regime of rapid tunneling and low force, we observe real-space Bloch oscillation amplitudes of hundreds of lattice sites, in both ground and excited bands. We demonstrate two unique capabilities enabled by tracking of Bloch dynamics in position space: measurement of the full position-momentum phase-space evolution during a Bloch cycle, and direct imaging of the lattice band structure. These techniques, along with the ability to exert long-distance coherent control of quantum gases without modulation, may open up new possibilities for quantum control and metrology.

Quantum dynamics of hard-core bosons in tilted bichromatic optical lattices

Xiaoming Cai, Shu Chen, Yupeng Wang

We study the dynamics of strongly repulsive Bose gas in tilted or driven bichromatic optical lattices. Using the Bose-Fermi mapping and exact numerical method, we calculate the reduced single-particle density matrices, and study the dynamics of the density profile, the momentum distribution, and the condensate fraction. We show the oscillating and breathing mode of the dynamics, and the depletion of condensate for short-time dynamics. For long-time dynamics, we clearly show the reconstruction of system at integer multiples of Bloch-Zener time. We also show how to achieve clear Bloch oscillation and Landau-Zener tunneling for many-particle systems.

Quantum dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven bichromatic optical lattices

Dirk Witthaut, F. Trimborn, V. Kegel +1 more

We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven optical superlattices. For a bichromatic lattice, each Bloch band splits up into two minibands such that the dynamics is governed by the interplay of Bloch oscillations and transitions between the bands. Thus, bichromatic potentials provide an excellent model system for the study of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling, and they allow for a variety of applications in matter-wave interferometry and quantum metrology. In the present paper, we investigate the coherent dynamics of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate as well as its stability. Different mechanisms of instability are discussed, which lead to a rapid depletion of the condensate.

Berry's Phase for Ultracold Atoms in an Accelerated Optical Lattice

C. Yüce

Berry's phase is investigated for ultracold atoms in a frequency modulated optical lattice. It is shown that Berry's phase appears due to Bloch oscillation and the periodic motion of the optical lattice. Particularly, Berry's phase for ultracold atoms under the gravitational force in an oscillating tight-binding optical lattice is calculated analytically. It is found that the Berry's phase depends linearly on the amplitude of the oscillation of the optical lattice.

The Bloch oscillations of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices

Yanchao Zhang, Chen Jiao, Ai‐Xia Zhang +1 more

Abstract We study the ground state and the Bloch oscillations of the spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional deep optical lattices. The phase transition between the zero-momentum phase and the plane-wave phase in untilted deep optical lattices is studied analytically. The Bloch oscillations in tilted lattices started in different ground state phases are analyzed. It is found that the Bloch dynamics is harmonic (anharmonic) in the zero-momentum phase (plane-wave phase). Furthermore, the modification of the Bloch oscillations induced by spin-orbit coupling, tunnelling coefficient and the external force (the inclination of the tilt) is revealed. In addition, the analytical condition for emerging the long-lived Bloch oscillations is obtained and the corresponding diagram in parameter space is provided. Particularly, we find that the spin-orbit coupling can extend the duration of the Bloch oscillations in the plane-wave phase. We provide an effective method to manipulate the Bloch dynamics in the deep optical lattices.
