Abstract

We study the dynamics of strongly repulsive Bose gas in tilted or driven bichromatic optical lattices. Using the Bose-Fermi mapping and exact numerical method, we calculate the reduced single-particle density matrices, and study the dynamics of the density profile, the momentum distribution, and the condensate fraction. We show the oscillating and breathing mode of the dynamics, and the depletion of condensate for short-time dynamics. For long-time dynamics, we clearly show the reconstruction of system at integer multiples of Bloch-Zener time. We also show how to achieve clear Bloch oscillation and Landau-Zener tunneling for many-particle systems.

Quantum dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven bichromatic optical lattices

Dirk Witthaut, F. Trimborn, V. Kegel +1 more

We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven optical superlattices. For a bichromatic lattice, each Bloch band splits up into two minibands such that the dynamics is governed by the interplay of Bloch oscillations and transitions between the bands. Thus, bichromatic potentials provide an excellent model system for the study of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling, and they allow for a variety of applications in matter-wave interferometry and quantum metrology. In the present paper, we investigate the coherent dynamics of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate as well as its stability. Different mechanisms of instability are discussed, which lead to a rapid depletion of the condensate.

Ground-state and dynamical properties of hard-core bosons in one-dimensional incommensurate optical lattices with a harmonic trap

Xiaoming Cai, Shu Chen, Yupeng Wang

We study properties of the strongly repulsive Bose gas on one-dimensional incommensurate optical lattices with a harmonic trap, which can be dealt with by use of an exact numerical method through Bose-Fermi mapping. We first exploit the phase transition of hard-core bosons in optical lattices from the superfluid to the Bose-glass phase as the strength of the incommensurate potential increases. Then we study the dynamical properties of the system after suddenly switching off the harmonic trap. We calculate the one-particle density matrices, the momentum distributions, and the natural orbitals and their occupations for both the static and dynamic systems. Our results indicate that the Bose-glass and superfluid phases display quite different properties and expansion dynamics.

Dynamics and stability of Bose-Einstein solitons in tilted optical lattices

Elena Díaz, Christopher Gaul, R. P. A. Lima +2 more

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates realize sensitive matter-wave interferometers. We investigate the dynamics and stability of bright-soliton wave packets in one-dimensional tilted optical lattices with a modulated mean-field interaction $g(t)$. By means of a time-reversal argument, we prove the stability of Bloch oscillations of breathing solitons that would be quasistatically unstable. Floquet theory shows that these breathing solitons can be more stable against certain experimental perturbations than rigid solitons or even noninteracting wave packets.

Dynamics of Atomic Matter Waves in Optical Lattices

Jeremy B. Reeves

Quantum gases in optical lattices allow for fundamental studies in atomic and condensed-matter physics and the exploration of novel effects. After a brief introduction to the fundamentals of quantum gas experiments in optical lattices, we discuss two recent experiments focusing on driven matter waves in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The first experiment uses a tilted bichromatic optical lattice to investigate the interplay of disorder and collisional interactions in the accelerated transport of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Here, a screening effect is observed, in which the interactions effectively cancel the damping of Bloch oscillations induced by a (quasi-)disordered potential. This effect can be understood through a modification of the underlying band structure by the interactions. The second experiment studies the dynamics of a weakly trapped condensate resonantly coupled to the orbitals of a strongly confining state-selective lattice. We observe momentum distributions that correspond to matter wave diffraction from a periodic structure; however, the diffractive dynamics remain strongly linked to the internal-state Rabi oscillations. In the regime investigated, which we call the nonadiabatic regime, no diffracting potential can be defined. We show how only for much stronger coupling, the internal and external dynamics decouple, transitioning from nonadiabatic diffraction to the well-studied Kapitza-Dirac diffraction. We further investigate prospects for realizing dissipative spin models in our ultracold atomic gas experiment. To this end, we develop and test in the laboratory several possible implementations of effective spins with differential coupling to a superfluid background and examine their viability for a realization of the spin-boson model. | 94 pages

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates: Quantum counterpart of dynamical instability

Andrey R. Kolovsky, Hans Jürgen Korsch, Eva-Maria Graefe

We study the Bloch dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice modeled by a Hamiltonian of Bose-Hubbard type. The corresponding mean-field system described by a discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation can exhibit dynamical (or modulation) instability due to chaotic dynamics and equipartition over the quasimomentum modes. It is shown that these phenomena are related to Bogoliubov's depletion of the Bose-Einstein condensate and a decoherence of the condensate in the many-particle description. Three types of dynamics are distinguished: (i) decaying oscillations in the region of dynamical instability and (ii) persisting Bloch oscillations or (iii) periodic decay and revivals in the region of stability.

Bose-Einstein condensates on tilted lattices: Coherent, chaotic, and subdiffusive dynamics

Andrey R. Kolovsky, Edgar A. Gómez, Hans Jürgen Korsch

The dynamics of a (quasi-) one-dimensional interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a tilted optical lattice is studied in a discrete mean-field approximation, i.e., in terms of the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. If the static field is varied, the system shows a plethora of dynamical phenomena. In the strong field limit, we demonstrate the existence of (almost) nonspreading states which remain localized on the lattice region populated initially and show coherent Bloch oscillations with fractional revivals in the momentum space (so-called quantum carpets). With decreasing field, the dynamics becomes irregular, however, still confined in configuration space. For even weaker fields, we find subdiffusive dynamics with a wave-packet width growing as ${t}^{1/4}$.
