Population trapping and dispersion in a three-level system

PAUL M. RADMORE, P. L. Knight

The population dynamics and spectra of a three-level system driven by two applied fields of arbitrary amplitudes and detunings are examined using dressed-state techniques. The authors report the existence of novel dispersive features in the variation with detuning of the intermediate-state population.

Removing population trapping in a five-level system with fast decay

Xi‐Jing Ning

A five-level quantum system including two low-lying states and three excited states of the ladder type coupled with four laser fields is investigated as it relates to dressed-atom models, and a dressed state is found to be independent of the ionization decaying from the highest level. Under general conditions, half of the initial population of the two low-lying states is trapped in the dressed state, leading to a low probability of ionization. Based on the analytical results, two schemes are proposed for removing population trapping. For a five-level system with hyperfine structures, such as the system for ionizing 235U atoms, population trapping takes place when the laser fields are weak and can be gotten rid of by an increase in laser intensity.

Field-squeeze operators via coherent population trapping

Qingping Hu, Xiangming Hu, Liang Hu +1 more

We present a scheme to generate unitarily two-mode and four-mode field squeezing in optical cavities with the near-resonantly dressed three-level atoms in the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ configuration. The dressing fields open two coherent population trapping (CPT) windows, within which the atoms stay predominantly in the dark state and yield strong nonlinearities for both the dressing fields themselves and the other applied fields. The two-mode squeeze operator is separated from degrees of freedom of atoms in a common CPT window, and the multimode squeeze operator is segregated in different CPT windows. The resulting two-mode and multimode interaction strengths are at least one order higher than in the previous dispersive schemes, where all fields are far off resonant with the atoms. The present near-resonant scheme is robust to spontaneous emission since atoms are nearly trapped in a long-lived superposition state.
