Abstract

The realization of tunable metasurfaces is of fundamental importance for boosting the electromagnetic field control ability. Especially, it is important to put forward new modulation methods to further understand their underlying modulation mechanism and expand their application range. In this paper, tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metasurfaces based on the phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Different from previous modulation methods of directly introducing the GST film below the metasurfaces, here a two-step lithography method is introduced to combine independent GST strips with bright and dark meta-atoms in the EIT structures, respectively, achieving the independent modulation of the EIT-like spectra. In addition, by applying temporal coupled-mode theory (TCMT), the EIT-like spectra with different GST crystallization levels were analysed and the corresponding characteristic parameters were determined simultaneously. These fitting results reveal that GST strips can modulate the resonances of the bright and dark meta-atoms independently by shifting the resonant frequency and increasing the decay rate, which in turn result in the different modulation features of the EIT-like spectra. This method improves the degree of freedom of active modulation and provides a new route for tunable slow light devices.

Weak coupling between bright and dark resonators with electrical tunability and analysis based on temporal coupled-mode theory

Quanhong Fu, Fuli Zhang, Yuancheng Fan +5 more

We investigate the electrically tunable Electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT)-like effect of active metamaterial structures composed of a wire and a split ring resonator by the simulation, experiment, and temporal coupled-mode theory. It is illustrated that an EIT-like effect appears as a result of weak coupling between bright and dark resonators. Around the EIT-like peak frequency, the superradiant resonance mode of the bright resonator is highly suppressed by the subradiant resonance mode of the dark resonator, and high transmittance as well as large group delay is manifested. By integrating a varactor diode into the EIT structure and altering the bias voltage, the EIT-like effect can be dynamically tuned. As the bias voltage ranges from 0 V to 8 V, the EIT-like peak frequency exhibits a prominent blueshift of 0.22 GHz and the transmittance experiences a modulation with a modulation depth up to 98%. Using the temporal coupled-mode theory, the transmission spectrum of the EIT structure is predicted and the parameters of the resonator system are retrieved.

Dual-band electromagnetically induced transparent metamaterial with slow light effect and energy storage

Shuquan Zheng, Mengshi Ma, You Lv +3 more

Abstract The realization of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) on metamaterials has special properties, such as strong slow-light, frequency-selection and so on, which have allowed EIT to be widely used in the fields of slow-light, optical storages and filters. In this paper, a metamaterial with two pairs of split ring resonators and one cut-wire is designed to achieve dual-band EIT effect at 0.5–2.14 GHz and 0.4–2.10 GHz with independently tunable bandwidths of 1.64 GHz and 2.7 GHz, respectively. The coupled Lorentz model is adopted to principally study the coupling characteristics between dark and bright modes. It is shown that the coupling strength between the dark and bright modes could be modulated by the coupling distance, which make the dual-band transparent window could be independently modulated by only changing the coupling distance between the bright and dark mode. The group delay and energy storage are also simulated by setting the Gaussian pulse signal passing through the EIT structure. The results show that the group delay of the designed EIT structure is 16.9 times that of the same thickness of dielectric material. The manufactured metamaterial is tested in a microwave anechoic chamber. The experimental and theoretical results are well consistent. These results could be beneficial for the development of EIT research toward some up-and-coming novel slow-light, optical storage, sensor and optical filter applications.

Polarization-independent tunable terahertz slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency metasurface

Abstract Tunable slow light systems have gained much interests recently due to their efficient control of strong light–matter interactions as well as their huge potential for realizing tunable device applications. Here, a dynamically tunable polarization independent slow light system is experimentally demonstrated via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a terahertz (THz) metasurface constituted by plus and dimer-shaped resonators. Optical pump-power dependent THz transmissions through the metasurface samples are studied using the optical pump THz probe technique. Under various photoexcitations, the EIT spectra undergo significant modulations in terms of its resonance line shapes (amplitude and intensity contrast) leading to dynamic tailoring of the slow light characteristics. Group delay and delay bandwidth product values are modulated from 0.915 ps to 0.42 ps and 0.059 to 0.025 as the pump fluence increases from 0 to 62.5 nJ cm−2. This results in tunable slow THz light with group velocities ranging from 2.18 × 105 m s−1 to 4.76 × 105 m s−1, almost 54% change in group velocity. The observed tuning is attributed to the photo-induced modifications of the optoelectronic properties of the substrate layer. The demonstrated slow light scheme can provide opportunities for realizing dynamically tunable slow light devices, delay lines, and other ultrafast devices for THz domain.

Liquid-Crystal-Based Electrically Tuned Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Metasurface Switch

Hang Su, Hao Wang, Hua Zhao +2 more

In this study, a structure to realize a switchover between two different responses of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) was designed and implemented by simulation. Taking advantage of the anisotropy in the structure and the coupling between the radiative and dark elements, a metasurface switch with modulation depth of over 85% between orthogonal polarization incident light illuminations was demonstrated. The key mode switchover between the "on" and "off" states was achieved by electrically changing the dressing light polarization with a liquid crystals layer pre-aligned with a mature technology, without changing the incident light and an expected and reversible transition from an EIT-like spectrum to a strong spectral dip was observed. The modulation in the EIT switch fabricated with the proposed straightforward approach is a promising tool to control the groping velocity delay.

A tailored ultra-broadband electromagnetically induced transparency metamaterial based on graphene

Fen-Ying Li, Tao Zhang, Quan-Fang Chen +3 more

Abstract Based on graphene, an ultra-broadband electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window with dynamic tunability is realized in theory. Through altering the Fermi level of graphene that can be regulated by the external voltage, the EIT window and the EIT effect, especially the slow-wave effect, can be easily adjusted. Moreover, the bandwidth of the EIT window can be changed by the incidence angle, achieving the transformation from broadband to narrowband. At the same time, by discussing the polarization state and loss index, the characteristics of polarization insensitivity and low loss are proved. Additionally, the influences of other parameters are discussed, such as the relaxation time of graphene and coupling distance. These unique features enable the designed EIT metamaterial to be masterly applied to optical switches, optical modulators, and slow-light devices.

Plasmonic metamaterial for electromagnetically induced transparency analogue and ultra-high figure of merit sensor

Dong Wu, Yumin Liu, Li Yu +7 more

In this work, using finite-difference time-domain method, we propose and numerically demonstrate a novel way to achieve electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon in the reflection spectrum by stacking two different types of coupling effect among different elements of the designed metamaterial. Compared with the conventional EIT-like analogues coming from only one type of coupling effect between bright and dark meta-atoms on the same plane, to our knowledge the novel approach is the first to realize the optically active and precise control of the wavelength position of EIT-like phenomenon using optical metamaterials. An on-to-off dynamic control of the EIT-like phenomenon also can be achieved by changing the refractive index of the dielectric substrate via adjusting an optical pump pulse. Furthermore, in near infrared region, the metamaterial structure can be operated as an ultra-high resolution refractive index sensor with an ultra-high figure of merit (FOM) reaching 3200, which remarkably improve the FOM value of plasmonic refractive index sensors. The novel approach realizing EIT-like spectral shape with easy adjustment to the working wavelengths will open up new avenues for future research and practical application of active plasmonic switch, ultra-high resolution sensors and active slow-light devices.
