Abstract

Abstract Tunable slow light systems have gained much interests recently due to their efficient control of strong light–matter interactions as well as their huge potential for realizing tunable device applications. Here, a dynamically tunable polarization independent slow light system is experimentally demonstrated via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a terahertz (THz) metasurface constituted by plus and dimer-shaped resonators. Optical pump-power dependent THz transmissions through the metasurface samples are studied using the optical pump THz probe technique. Under various photoexcitations, the EIT spectra undergo significant modulations in terms of its resonance line shapes (amplitude and intensity contrast) leading to dynamic tailoring of the slow light characteristics. Group delay and delay bandwidth product values are modulated from 0.915 ps to 0.42 ps and 0.059 to 0.025 as the pump fluence increases from 0 to 62.5 nJ cm−2. This results in tunable slow THz light with group velocities ranging from 2.18 × 105 m s−1 to 4.76 × 105 m s−1, almost 54% change in group velocity. The observed tuning is attributed to the photo-induced modifications of the optoelectronic properties of the substrate layer. The demonstrated slow light scheme can provide opportunities for realizing dynamically tunable slow light devices, delay lines, and other ultrafast devices for THz domain.

Slow light modulator using semiconductor metamaterial

Zohreh Vafapour

A tunable slow light thermal modulator using 2D semiconductor metamaterial is presented and investigated. We have designed and simulated a terahertz (THz) semiconductor metamaterial (MM) waveguide system; The simulation results show the spectral properties and the group delay of the proposed 2D metamaterial can be tuned by adjusting temperature and the semiconductor used in the waveguide. Our calculations exhibit a significant slow-light effect, based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect. By appropriately adjusting the distance between the sub radiant and supper radiant modes, a flat band corresponding to nearly constant group delay (of order of 71) over a narrow bandwidth of THz regime can be achieved. Our analytical results show that the group velocity dispersion (GVD) parameter can reach zero. The simulation results show the incident pulse can be slowed down without distortion owing to the low group velocity dispersion (LGVD). The outstanding result is that, the 2D semiconductor metamaterial is in a high decrease of the group velocity and therefore slow light applications. The proposed compact slow light thermal modulator can avoid the distortion of signal pulse, and thus may find potential applications in slow-light and thermal modulator devices and thermal applications.

Reconfigurable electromagnetically induced transparency metamaterial simultaneously coupled with the incident electric and magnetic fields

Fenying Li, Mingyu Mao, Tao Zhang +3 more

In this paper, an electromagnetically induced transparency metamaterial simultaneously coupled with the incident electric and magnetic fields is designed and presented theoretically, whereas its reconfigurability, slow-wave effect, low-loss, and polarization insensitivity are analyzed and discussed principally. Based on the tunable solid-state plasma, there is a transmission peak with a 92.06% transmission at 0.544 THz in State 1 and a transmission peak with a 92.84% transmission at 0.7535 THz in State 2, thus achieving a frequency shift of 0.2085 THz. The maximum group delay, group index, and delay-bandwidth product in State 1 or 2, which are 723.7 ps or 494.7 ps, 1024.1 or 700.1, and 48.5 or 36.1, respectively, and the excellent slow-wave effects are discussed. In addition, the low-loss and polarization insensitivity are realized by rotating the split-ring resonators 180° and twisting the planar structure 90°. Considering the unique features of the designed metamaterial, it can be extensively applied to slow-light devices, communication, sensors, and nonlinear devices.

Subluminal and superluminal terahertz radiation in metamaterials with electromagnetically induced transparency

Zhengyang Bai, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to design a new type of optical metamaterial that can mimic the functionality of four-state atomic systems of N-type energy-level configuration with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that in such metamaterial a transition from a single EIT to a double EIT of terahertz radiation may be easily achieved by actively tuning the intensity of the infrared pump field or passively tuning the geometrical parameters of resonator structures. In addition, the group velocity of the terahertz radiation can be varied from subluminal to superluminal by changing the pump field intensity. The scheme suggested here may be used to construct chip-scale slow and fast light devices and to realize rapidly responded switching of terahertz radiation at room temperature.

Dual-mode electromagnetically induced transparency and slow light in a terahertz metamaterial

Kun Zhang, Cheng Wang, Ling Qin +4 more

In this Letter, we construct a metamaterial with dual-mode electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like behavior by introducing "bright atoms," "quasi-dark atoms," and "dark atoms" simultaneously. The dual-mode EIT-like behavior has been demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically in terahertz (THz) regime. At two EIT-like modes, slow light is also observed as two time-delayed wave packets, and the effective group refractive index can reach 10(2). Furthermore, stable dual-mode EIT-like behavior is verified in this metamaterial for a wide range of oblique incident angles. Our work provides a design approach to mimic dual-mode EIT, and such an approach may achieve potential applications on miniaturized and versatile THz devices.

Controllable all‐optical modulation speed in hybrid silicon‐germanium devices utilizing the electromagnetically induced transparency effect

Junhu Zhou, Chenxi Zhang, Qirui Liu +4 more

Abstract Incorporating auxiliary all‐optical modulation speeds as optional response modes into a single metamaterial is a promising research route towards advanced terahertz (THz) applications ranging from spectroscopy and sensing to communications. Particularly, a plethora of dynamically tunable optical functionalities are determined by the resonant light‐matter interactions. Here, an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonator stacked with two traditional semiconductor films, namely silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge), is experimentally demonstrated. A giant switching feature of the EIT window with a peak at 0.65 THz occurs when the Si or Ge film is excited by ultrafast optical pulses, allowing for an optically tunable group delay of the THz wave packet. The recovery time for the slow and fast on‐off‐on switching cycles is 1.7 ns and 11 ps, respectively, which are mapped as the pump delay time of Si and Ge. Two optional response modes are integrated on the same device, where the modulation speed varies by three orders of magnitude, endowing the modulator more compact. This work provides new prospects for the design and construction of novel chip‐scale THz devices based on EIT and their applications in areas of sophisticated optical buffering and active filtering.

Coherent control of magneto-optical Faraday rotation at terahertz frequencies in graphene-based metasurfaces via electromagnetically induced transparency

Hazrat Ali, Muhammad Imtiaz Khan, Rafi Ud Din +4 more

Abstract We investigate theoretically the controlled magneto-optical Faraday rotation (MO-FR) through graphene-based metasurfaces placed on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) substrate at terahertz (THz) frequencies. MO-FR and transmission of the probe light are studied by changing the electric field that manipulates the group index of the substrate. The MO-FR can be controlled and enhanced by varying the periodic width of graphene ribbons. The polarization plane of MO-FR changes with 180 degrees while increasing the probe field detuning through the EIT substrate. The zero-crossing of MO-FR shifts to higher THz frequencies with increasing the magnetic field. The transmission of the probe light pulse at THz frequencies is investigated with the probe detuning and the applied magnetic field.
