Toward cavity QED with magnetically trapped atoms

Kevin L. Moore, Subhadeep Gupta, Sabrina R. Leslie +3 more

We are attempting to magnetically trap cold rubidium atoms in a high-Q optical cavity for the purpose of deterministic cavity quantum electrodynamics. Recent experimental progress will be discussed, focusing on the performance and capabilities of our millimeter-scale magnetic trap.

New light on cavity QED with ultracold atoms

Carsten Henke, Brian Power, Fernando Sols

We give an overview on quantum electrodynamics (QED) with atoms located near a planar surface. Starting from basic concepts like electric and magnetic dipole transitions and electromagnetic near fields, we explain some properties of magnetic fields that are relevant for ultracold atoms in hybrid electromagnetic-surface traps. In particular, we discuss next order corrections to the atom-surface interaction potential due to the magnetic moment.
