Abstract

In this paper, a power optimized source-based-jamming scheme is proposed for secure communication in a two-hop amplify-and-forward relaying network with multiple trusted relays and a passive eavesdropper. The proposed transmission scheme employs a single jamming signal, which is transmitted from the source node along with the information to degrade the eavesdropper. The power optimization is done by means of Nelder-Mead algorithm. The conventional transmission schemes and optimization methods, jamming scheme without optimization are derived for performance comparison. Simulation results show that the secrecy performance of the proposed power optimized scheme outperforms other schemes.

Nelder‐Mead–based power optimization for secrecy enhancement in amplify‐and‐forward cooperative relay networks

P M Shemi, M G Jibukumar, Munsif Ali

Summary Cooperative communication based on relaying nodes has been considered as a promising technique to increase the physical layer security (PLS) performance in wireless communications. In this paper, an optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme based on Nelder‐Mead (NM) algorithm is proposed for improving the secrecy rate of amplify‐and‐forward (AF) cooperative relay networks employing cooperative jamming (CJ) scheme. The proposed hybrid jamming scheme allows the source and selected relay to transmit the jamming signal along with the information to confound the eavesdropper. The path selection probability of ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is used for selecting the relay for transmission. The performance based on secrecy rate is evaluated for “n” trusted relays distributed dispersedly between the source and destination. Gradient‐based optimization and three‐dimensional exhaustive search methods are used as benchmark schemes for comparison of the proposed power optimization algorithm. The secrecy performance is also compared with conventional AF scheme and CJ scheme without power optimization (EPA). The impact of single and multiple relays on secrecy performance is also evaluated. Numerical results reveal that, compared with the gradient method and exhaustive search algorithm, the proposed power allocation strategy achieves optimal performance. Also, the derived OPA results show a significantly higher secrecy rate than the EPA strategy for both CJ and AF schemes.

Power Optimization Algorithms for Secure Communication via Cooperative Jamming Schemes: A Comparative Study

Shemi Panayappilly Mohammed, Masina Venkata Rajesh, Vishnu Vasudev

The ultimate objective of cooperative communication is to secure data transmitted from source to destination against eavesdropper attacks. The paper compares different power optimization algorithms for cooperative jamming schemes to improve the secrecy performance of a four-node Amplify and Forward (AF) relay network. The main focus of the work is on the investigation of Optimal Power Allocation (OPA) for maximizing the secrecy rate subject to a total power constraint using two cooperative jamming schemes, Source and Relay Based Jamming (SRBJ) and Source Based Jamming (SBJ). The secrecy performance of SBJ is evaluated for trusted and untrusted relaying scenarios. In the untrusted case, the situation in which an external eavesdropper and untrusted relay exist simultaneously is analyzed. The iterative algorithms such as the Nelder-Mead technique (N-M), the Broyden - Fletcher – Goldfarb - Shanno (BFGS) algorithm and the Conjugate-Gradient (CG) methods are used for power optimization and, consequently, for secrecy rate maximization. Both symmetric and asymmetric relay positions are subjected to the secrecy analysis. A comparison is conducted using the equal power Allocation (EPA) approach and the Exhaustive Search (ES) algorithm. The paper also studies the complexity of different algorithms and jamming methods based on the average number of iterations required for system convergence. It was found that the iterative algorithms provide better secrecy than the conventional methods. Experimental results reveal a trade-off between the iterative algorithms' convergence and complexity. The gradient-based BFGS and CG algorithms are less complex than the gradient-free N-M method. When assessing all jamming schemes, the N-M method is a good choice for convergence, whereas the BFGS is the best choice for lesser complexity.

Power Allocation for Cooperative Jamming in Amplify-and-Forward Relaying Network with Eavesdropper

Yongyun Choi, Jae Hong Lee

In this paper, we propose an optimal source power allocation scheme for a two-hop amplify-and-forward relaying network with cooperative jamming where a source and destination transmit jamming signals. For the full CSI of all link and the CSI for desired link, the source power is optimally splitted to minimize the secrecy outage probability. Simulation results show that the proposed power allocation scheme improves the secrecy rate and reliability.

Cooperative Jamming and Power Allocation for Wireless Relay Networks in Presence of Eavesdropper

Lun Dong, Homayoun Yousefi’zadeh, Hamid Jafarkhani

Relying on physical layer security is an attractive alternative of utilizing cryptographic algorithms at upper layers of protocol stack for secure communications. In this paper, we consider a two-hop wireless relay network in the presence of an eavesdropper. Our scenario of interest spans over a four-node network model including a source, a destination, a trusted relay, and an untrusted eavesdropper in which the relay forwards the source message in a decode-and-forward (DF) fashion. The source and relay are allowed to use some of their available power to transmit jamming signals in order to create interference at the eavesdropper. The relay and destination are assumed to have the knowledge of the jamming signals. An important question is how to allocate the transmission power of the message signal and that of the jamming signal. First, we propose an optimal power allocation solution in which the knowledge of global channel state information (CSI) is required. To facilitate practical system design, two simple yet sub-optimal power allocation solutions are proposed which do not rely on eavesdropper's channels. For the purpose of performance comparisons, power allocation problems for two benchmark schemes without jamming are also analyzed.

Physical layer security in two-hop cooperative networks based on multi-node SWIPT

Dandan Guo, Baogang Li, Yabo Lv +1 more

In this paper, we consider a multi-node-assisted two-hop cooperative network, where an energy constrained source (S) aims to establish secure communications with a legitimate user in the presence of an eavesdropper. The cooperative nodes simultaneously assist the transmission from base station to legitimate user. Each cooperative node applies power splitting protocol to coordinate the received signal energy for information decoding and energy harvesting. The power splitting ratios at multi-node are formulated based on decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocols. Depending on the available channel state information (CSI) at the source, we propose two different jamming schemes for secrecy performance enhancement. An optimal node is selected as a jammer to interfere the eavesdropper or a relay to forward the information to legitimate user. we evaluate the network performance based on secrecy outage probability (SOP). In addition, simple and accurate approximations are obtained at different transmission speed thresholds. Furthermore, numerical results reveal that there exist unique splitting ratios and harvesting efficiency that minimize the SOP.

Joint Decode-and-Forward and Cooperative Jamming for Secure Wireless Communications

Shuanglin Huang, Jiaolong Wei, Yang Cao +1 more

In a cooperative wireless network, we exploited node cooperation for achieving physical layer based security. In this paper, the case of one source-destination pair with the help of multiple cooperating nodes(relay nodes and jamming nodes) in the presence of one eavesdropper was considered to improve the performance of secure wireless communications. A novel cooperative scheme joint decode-and-forward and cooperative jamming(JDFCJ) was proposed. In this scheme, the relay nodes transmit a weighted version of the source signals and the jamming nodes just transmit a common weighted jamming signal to confound the eavesdropper. The novel system design is proposed to minimize the transmit power subject to a secrecy rate constraint. For JDFCJ, the optimal power allocation is obtained in closed-form in the condition of the complete nulling of jamming signals at the destination. The numerical evaluation of the transmit power results shows that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the performance of secure wireless communications, as compared to the DF scheme.
