Abstract

Summary Cooperative communication based on relaying nodes has been considered as a promising technique to increase the physical layer security (PLS) performance in wireless communications. In this paper, an optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme based on Nelder‐Mead (NM) algorithm is proposed for improving the secrecy rate of amplify‐and‐forward (AF) cooperative relay networks employing cooperative jamming (CJ) scheme. The proposed hybrid jamming scheme allows the source and selected relay to transmit the jamming signal along with the information to confound the eavesdropper. The path selection probability of ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is used for selecting the relay for transmission. The performance based on secrecy rate is evaluated for “n” trusted relays distributed dispersedly between the source and destination. Gradient‐based optimization and three‐dimensional exhaustive search methods are used as benchmark schemes for comparison of the proposed power optimization algorithm. The secrecy performance is also compared with conventional AF scheme and CJ scheme without power optimization (EPA). The impact of single and multiple relays on secrecy performance is also evaluated. Numerical results reveal that, compared with the gradient method and exhaustive search algorithm, the proposed power allocation strategy achieves optimal performance. Also, the derived OPA results show a significantly higher secrecy rate than the EPA strategy for both CJ and AF schemes.

Power Optimization Algorithms for Secure Communication via Cooperative Jamming Schemes: A Comparative Study

Shemi Panayappilly Mohammed, Masina Venkata Rajesh, Vishnu Vasudev

The ultimate objective of cooperative communication is to secure data transmitted from source to destination against eavesdropper attacks. The paper compares different power optimization algorithms for cooperative jamming schemes to improve the secrecy performance of a four-node Amplify and Forward (AF) relay network. The main focus of the work is on the investigation of Optimal Power Allocation (OPA) for maximizing the secrecy rate subject to a total power constraint using two cooperative jamming schemes, Source and Relay Based Jamming (SRBJ) and Source Based Jamming (SBJ). The secrecy performance of SBJ is evaluated for trusted and untrusted relaying scenarios. In the untrusted case, the situation in which an external eavesdropper and untrusted relay exist simultaneously is analyzed. The iterative algorithms such as the Nelder-Mead technique (N-M), the Broyden - Fletcher – Goldfarb - Shanno (BFGS) algorithm and the Conjugate-Gradient (CG) methods are used for power optimization and, consequently, for secrecy rate maximization. Both symmetric and asymmetric relay positions are subjected to the secrecy analysis. A comparison is conducted using the equal power Allocation (EPA) approach and the Exhaustive Search (ES) algorithm. The paper also studies the complexity of different algorithms and jamming methods based on the average number of iterations required for system convergence. It was found that the iterative algorithms provide better secrecy than the conventional methods. Experimental results reveal a trade-off between the iterative algorithms' convergence and complexity. The gradient-based BFGS and CG algorithms are less complex than the gradient-free N-M method. When assessing all jamming schemes, the N-M method is a good choice for convergence, whereas the BFGS is the best choice for lesser complexity.

Enhancing Secrecy in Cooperative Networks via Power Optimized Source Based Jamming

P M Shemi, M G Jibukumar, Munsif Ali

In this paper, a power optimized source-based-jamming scheme is proposed for secure communication in a two-hop amplify-and-forward relaying network with multiple trusted relays and a passive eavesdropper. The proposed transmission scheme employs a single jamming signal, which is transmitted from the source node along with the information to degrade the eavesdropper. The power optimization is done by means of Nelder-Mead algorithm. The conventional transmission schemes and optimization methods, jamming scheme without optimization are derived for performance comparison. Simulation results show that the secrecy performance of the proposed power optimized scheme outperforms other schemes.

Performance study of hybrid decode–amplify–forward (HDAF) relaying scheme for physical layer security in wireless cooperative network

Kiran Kumar Gurrala, Susmita Das

Summary In this paper, the secrecy performance and power allocation of the signal‐to‐noise ratio‐based hybrid decode–amplify–forward (HDAF) relaying protocol in wireless cooperative network are investigated to get security at physical layer. The performance metrics considered are secrecy rate and intercept probability. The Ergodic secrecy rate is approximated theoretically. The effect of relay and eavesdropper locations on the secrecy performance of the system is analyzed. It is found that maximum secrecy rate is obtained for the relay close‐to‐destination case and minimum for the relay close‐to‐eavesdropper case. Jamming schemes are superior in secrecy rate performance than without jamming schemes. To enhance the secrecy rate further with the optimized relay and jammer powers, invasive weed optimization (IWO) algorithm‐based power allocation is proposed. Here, maximizing the secrecy rate is defined as the cost function for the proposed IWO algorithm‐based power allocation. Comparative study is done over the conventional equal and proposed power allocation schemes for validation. The proposed power allocation scheme proved to be superior. Security-concern relaying scheme for amplify-and-forward network with untrusted relay nodes

Huiying Song, Yuanyuan Gao, Guozhen Zang +2 more

The Physical Layer Security (PLS) technology has been proved to be an effective way to reduce information leakage in wireless communication networks. This paper discusses the problem of secure transmission for Amplify-and-Forward (AF) cooperative network which contains both an external eavesdropper and some untrusted relays at the same time, where each relay acts as a helper of transmitting information and a potential eavesdropper. We adopt the technology of Cooperative Jamming (CJ), which yields a significant performance in terms of providing a better level of security against eavesdropping and improving the secure transmission performance of the system. First we discuss the security performance of this new system model, give the secrecy rate in theory and derive a tight lower bound of this secrecy rate. Then we propose a relay selection scheme, which avoids using the channel state information (CSI) of external eavesdropper, to transmit information. Afterward, we also discuss the problem of power allocation in order to maximize the secrecy rate.

Jamming strategy and security performance analysis for the cooperative system with untrusted relay

Qian Neng Zhou, Guozhen Zang, Yuanyuan Gao +1 more

In this paper, we investigate the cooperative jamming (CJ) strategy in a three-node cooperative system, where the relay, which forwards the received signals in a amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol, is untrusted, furthermore, there is an external malicious eavesdropper. A two-phase CJ scheme, which merely using internal nodes of the cooperative system without the help of external nodes, is proposed to enhance the secrecy information transmission against the malicious eavesdropper and the untrusted relay. And then, we provide the optimal power allocation with maximum instantaneous secrecy rate (OPA-MISR) and the suboptimal power allocation with max-min instantaneous secrecy rate (SPA-MMISR). Finally, the simulation results show that the cooperative jamming proposed is effective to improve the achievable instantaneous secrecy rate and to resist both internal untrusted relay and external malicious eavesdropper.

Joint optimal power allocation, cooperative beamforming, and jammer selection design to secure untrusted relaying network

Majid Moradikia, Saeed Mashdour, Ali Jamshidi

Abstract A half‐duplex relaying network provides 2 opportunities for passive eavesdroppers (Eves) and 1 opportunity for untrusted relays to intercept the information. In this paper, we aim to enhance the physical layer security of a cooperative network where a single‐antenna source intends to communicate with a single‐antenna destination in the presence of a group of untrusted relays and a passive eavesdropper. The objective is to protect the data confidentially while concurrently relying on the untrusted relays as potential Eves to improve both the security and reliability of the network. To realize this objective, we design a joint cooperative beamforming and cooperative jamming strategy. With the aim of maximizing the instantaneous secrecy rate, an optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme is proposed where the transmission powers of both jammer and source are optimized simultaneously under the total power budget constraint. To further improve the secrecy rate, a jammer selection strategy is also proposed where cooperative jamming is performed by the destination or one of the idle relays. For the proposed scheme, a closed‐form expression of beamformer vector is derived by solving a generalized eigenvalue problem. Finally, for the OPA problem, it is possible to be neither convex nor concave. In this regard, all possible cases are investigated to determine the OPA factor accurately. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed joint OPA–cooperative beamforming scheme, together with the most appropriate jammer selection strategy, significantly increases the secrecy rate.
