Abstract

This paper presents a majority-logic decoding (MLgD) algorithm for non-binary LDPC codes based on a novel expansion of the Tanner graph. The expansion introduced converts the Q-ary graph into a binary one, which makes the new MLgD algorithm more attractive for hardware implementations. Proposed algorithm performs significantly better than the existing MLgD algorithms in the waterfall region, and it shows a much lower error-floor as well. Algorithm only requires integer additions, comparisons, finite field operations and some binary operations. Thus, it offers an effective trade-off between performance and complexity in decoding non-binary LDPC codes.

An efficient majority-logic based message-passing algorithm for non-binary LDPC decoding

Yichao Lu, Nanfan Qiu, Zhixiang Chen +1 more

This paper presents a majority-logic based message-passing algorithm for decoding non-binary LDPC codes. Recently, many majority-logic decoding (MLGD) algorithms make huge efforts on reducing the computational complexity for decoding non-binary LDPC codes. Inspired by one step majority-logic decoding and q-ary sum-product algorithm, we devise a novel iterative double-reliability-based (IDRB) MLGD algorithm which carries out an efficient trade-off between decoding computational complexity and error performance. The proposed algorithm achieves a remarkable enhancement on error correct ability and yet requires only integer operations and finite field operations. Simulation results on two NB-LDPC codes show that we succeed in achieving significant coding gain compared with IHRB- and ISRB-MLGD with limited complexity increase.

Low error-floor majority-logic decoding based algorithm for non-binary LDPC codes

Liyuan Song, Mu Zhang, Qin Huang +1 more

The traditional majority-logic decoding (MLgD) based algorithms suffer error-floors for decoding non-binary LDPC codes with small column weights. This paper presents a bit-reliability based MLgD (BRB-MLgD) algorithm with low error-floors for non-binary LDPC codes. The proposed algorithm is carried out based on the binary representations of non-binary symbols. The reliability update along each edge of the Tanner graph of a non-binary LDPC code is in terms of bits rather than symbols. Thus, its computational complexity and memory consumption are less than those of the existing MLgD based algorithms. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce error-floors with small performance degradation in the waterfall region.

Bit-Reliability Based Low-Complexity Decoding Algorithms for Non-Binary LDPC Codes

Qin Huang, Mu Zhang, Zulin Wang +1 more

This paper presents bit-reliability based majority-logic decoding (MLgD) algorithms for non-binary LDPC codes. The proposed algorithms pass only one Galois field element and its reliability along each edge of the Tanner graph of a non-binary LDPC code. Since their reliability updates are in terms of bits rather than symbols, they are more efficient than traditional MLgD based decoding algorithms. By weighting the soft reliability of the extrinsic information-sums based on their hard reliability, the proposed algorithms can achieve good error performance for non-binary LDPC codes with various column weights. Moreover, their computational complexity and memory consumption are remarkably reduced compared with existing MLgD based decoding algorithms. As a result, they provide effective tradeoffs between error performance and complexity for decoding of non-binary LDPC codes.

A Novel Graph Expansion and a Decoding Algorithm for NB-LDPC Codes

V. B. Wijekoon, Emanuele Viterbo, Yi Hong +2 more

Non-binary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) codes are known to offer several advantages over their binary counterparts, but the higher complexity, and the resource-hungry nature of decoding algorithms have so far restricted their practical usage. In this paper, we propose a new decoding algorithm for NB-LDPC codes over finite fields of characteristic 2, based on a novel binary expansion of the Q-ary Tanner graph. While it offers substantial complexity gains, simulation results demonstrate that the performance loss of the new algorithm, in comparison to the best known decoder, is quite small. Furthermore, due to being based on a binary graph, it is particularly attractive for hardware implementations. We also suggest a simplified version of the algorithm, which offers even higher gains in complexity.

Dynamic Check Message Majority-Logic Decoding Algorithm for Non-binary LDPC Codes

Yichao Lu, Xiao Peng, Guifen Tian +1 more

Majority-logic algorithms are devised for decoding non-binary LDPC codes in order to reduce computational complexity. However, compared with conventional belief propagation algorithms, majority-logic algorithms suffer from severe bit error performance degradation. This paper presents a low-complexity reliability-based algorithm aiming at improving error correcting ability of majority-logic algorithms. Reliability measures for check nodes are novelly introduced to realize mutual update between variable message and check message, and hence more efficient reliability propagation can be achieved, similar to belief-propagation algorithm. Simulation results on NB-LDPC codes with different characteristics demonstrate that our algorithm can reduce the bit error ratio by more than one order of magnitude and the coding gain enhancement over ISRB-MLGD can reach 0.2-2.0dB, compared with both the ISRB-MLGD and IISRB-MLGD algorithms. Moreover, simulations on typical LDPC codes show that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is closely equivalent to ISRB-MLGD algorithm, and is less than 10% of Min-max algorithm. As a result, the proposed algorithm achieves a more efficient trade-off between decoding computational complexity and error performance.

A low-complexity coding scheme for non-binary LDPC code based on IDRB-MLGD algorithm

Xin Wei Xiao, Yichao Lu, Satoshi Goto

Non-binary LDPC codes are flourishing in many areas for their excellent error correction performance in last decade. However, the bottleneck for NB-LDPC codes' implementation is the high decoding computational complexity. To seek for a low-complexity decoding algorithm, iterative double-reliability-based majority-logic decoding (IDRB-MLGD) algorithm has been proposed, which still suffers from relatively high error floor at BER level of 10-6. In this work, we propose a low-complexity coding scheme for non-binary LDPC code that bases on iterative IDRB-MLGD algorithm. The proposed work concatenates a Reed Solomon code with non-binary LDPC code which is decoded by IDRB-MLGD algorithm. By such concatenation, errors left by IDRB-MLGD algorithm are set into RS code blocks, which can be further reduced by these RS code blocks. Moreover, a low-complexity decoding algorithm is used to decode the RS code. The comparison results on decoding computational complexity indicate that concatenation only brings about trivial complexity increase. Simulation results show that this proposed concatenated coding scheme can trade off the performance and decoding computational complexity efficiently.
