An Experimental Study of Harmonic Optical Quantizer

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrated optical quantization with same number of optical filters as the number of bits for equipment reduction. Optical filters were designed to obtain 1-bit optical quantization characteristics that have a harmonic relationship by self- frequency shift due to self-phase modulation. We report the effective number of bits was 2. 8bit in three-bit optical quantization.

Noninterferometric optical phase-shifter module in phase-shifted optical quantization

Xin Fu, Hongming Zhang, Zhuangqian Zhang +1 more

A noninterferometric configuration for an optical phase-shifter module (OPSM) is presented and demonstrated, which is a key component in phase-shifted optical quantization (PSOQ) systems. In a PSOQ system employing such an OPSM, the input electrical analog signal is applied on two LiNbO3 intensity modulators in parallel, and the OPSM takes the outputs of the intensity modulators as its input and yields N-channel optical outputs, which are thresholded to generate digitized values of the input analog signal. The feasibility of this OPSM configuration is demonstrated by a proof-of-principle PSOQ experiment, in which a 2.5-GHz single tone is applied to the modulators and 16 transmission curves are recorded. Based on these transmission curves, software sampling indicates that an effective number of bits equal to 4.17 is attainable for a frequency as high as 2.5 GHz. Benefits of such an OPSM are easier control and high precision of desired phase shifts.

Experimental demonstration of slicing supercontinuum-based 4.39-bit all-optical quantization

Shipei Jing, Rui Ma, Kuiru Wang +5 more

We demonstrate an all-optical quantization scheme by slicing the supercontinuum (SC) generated in the normal dispersion region of a highly nonlinear fiber. The −20 dB bandwidth of the SC is broadened from 12.9 to 49.7 nm when input average power varies from 0.062 to 0.692 mW, which is used for realizing subsequent quantization. In addition, in order to evaluate the system performance, we have calculated the values of differential nonlinear error, integral nonlinear error, and effective number of bit from the experimental results as 0.471 least significant bit (LSB), 0.519 LSB, and 4.39 bit, respectively.
